Hacking 2 wii's with no dvd drive in them? and cfg loader

hello
a friend of mine has got 2 wii's without dvd drives in them
both softmoded with the latest 4.2 guide rev 17 ,hermes cios 222 e.c.t
we thought we could just use a usb hard drive with comfigurable usb loader on,as there is no dvd drive to play games
but when we try to play a game,we just get black screen
it must be because of having no dvd drives in them,as the hard drive works on other wii's with a dvd drive's in

has anyone tryed cfg on with a wii with no dvd drive in ?
and is it possible to get cfg to work without a dvd drive in the wii?

you need to have the board off the drive in there. the drive itself doesnt need to be present. there are a few topics created where people have done this and documented the whole thing. just search that and follow their instructions.

just been doing a bit of searching and yes the minimum is a working drive board

i also tryed hermes uloader with a ext dvd drive but this wouldnt work also
im guessing this too needs a working drive board.
