Should I get a SD, SDHC or SDXC ? What is recommended ?

What is the recommended capacity ? 32GB or 64GB ? (I do not put my games on the SD card, I use an external HDD)

For SD cards, for ensure you can use all of the avaliable homebrew apps it's recommended 2 GB maximum (normal SD, not SDHC or SDXC).

For USB HDD (Hard Disk Drives), the size doesn't matter (i think)

Most updated homebrew apps can support at least SDHC, most can support greater sizes than that too. I don't know of too many apps that only work with SD, and chances are most of those are old apps you shouldn't be using anyway.

The only modern relevant use case I can think of for using an SD card over SDHC or SDXC is that Action Replay discs on the GameCube can't recognise HC or XC cards.

Modern homebrew supports the more modern formats - just remember that Windows doesn't like formatting anything 64GB or bigger as FAT32, so use a third-party tool to format large devices as FAT32 with 32k clusters.

Unless you're still staying in an old version where SDHC is not supported, it should be fine regardless of the type. although normal SD could be preferred in some usecases, SDHC should be as fine if you're using relatively new homebrews and softwares.

When modding it you need 2gb or under ... after that you can go larger with no issue .. not sure the max tho

The SD Card held VC & Wiiware system menu, would having a more modern card negatively impact that over the standard old 4gig and under cards?

Nope, and it's recommended to install them to an Emunand (Uneek) if you're planning on installing lots of VC/WiiWare anyway.. If you only want to install a few titles then it's okay, as long as your sd card is supported and is not too large (like 64GB or plus)..

I have about 50 I'd guess. Some are SNES NES though so pretty small. I have copied most of the file size to the SD and actually may be moving all of them there, considering booting to wiiflow if I can find a very wii like theme for it. If not I'm making or finding a full set of GC & wii channels.

Oh yeah and I'm not sure if I'm on emu or real nand. I hacked this wii about 7 years ago and updated wiiflow and nintendont & I think some of the iOS a couple of years ago roughly. I try not to mess with the innerworkings of the OS post hack because I bricked a wii following a guide that suggested 4.1 or 2 was better than 4.3

That's quite alot, though i think you could copy them to the sd after you install them to the Wii's nand. Though it's a pretty daunting process since the Wii's nand can hold only a few at a time, excluding saves, other installed channels etc.

You can't launch VC/WiiWare games that're on the sd card, you can only launch them through the Wii's home menu..

Those forwarder channels don't take much space though they count too, if you're planning on installing them on the Wii's nand you better free up some space..

Mine do, not sure why they do but they do just fine. It might take like 3 seconds longer to load or something but they work straight off the SD in the system menu. I installed them with WiiModLite although it wasn't that version of the app it was the previous name just updated to the new one. WiiMod I guess. But I install them to the system first and then move the data over to the SD.

Yeah. Can launch a lot of items through SNEEK off of an SD card on my Wii and Wii U using USB Loader GX.

With regards to Op's question, it really depends on what you plan to store. Like 4GB is plenty for casual users since most users put everything else on the USB drive.

SD Cards go upto 2GB.
SDHC Cards go upto 32GB.
SDHX Cards go upto 2TB.

Some exploits, such as Smash Stack only work with an SD Card.
Nintendo only supports SD or SDHC cards, so that's the most for official use, such as copying Wii saves from the system menu without any form of homebrew. Note Wii SDHC support is only if on 4.0 or newer firmware.
But for homebrew any card should work. I've got a 128GB card working fine, and I've read other people have 2TB cards working fine too.

So in summary, if you don't need much space then get a 2GB card as it offers maximum compatibility. If you need more space then get something upto 32GB as it offers the next level of compatibility. And if you need more space then get any card over 32GB, although compatibility is less and they can get real expensive.

Please note that although compatibility theoretically lowers with size, in practice it rarely causes any issues, so don't sweat it.

I currently have 4GB SDHC, didn't even realize it wasn't an OG. It's big enough for all the wiiware we'll want. But I'm thinking on replacing the HDD soon iirc think it's my old laptop drive from a 08 laptop that burnt itself up. May just get like a Crucial, Kingston or Gigabyte sata SSD. Whatever is cheap but reputable once I get to that point. 250gig at the moment will upgrade to 500 as well.

@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.
