Reports indicate Sony may have disabled PlayStation Plus subscription stacking

playstation-plus.jpg

As we approach PlayStation Plus' revamp coming in June, more details have been emerging about how the transition to the new PlayStation Plus will work. In a new FAQ posted yesterday, Sony announced that those subscribed to both PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now will be automatically upgraded to the highest tier for the length of the longer subscription. Meaning, if you had a PlayStation Now subscription set to end in July and a PlayStation Plus subscription set to end in November, you would receive the highest tier of PlayStation Plus benefits until November, which would be your new renewal date.

However, users are now reporting that they are unable to stack time onto their PlayStation Plus subscription, whether through the PS Store or prepaid cards. Posts on reddit, Resetera and Twitter show that those with active subscriptions are unable to add more time to them, even with prepaid cards. According to PushSquare, customer support has told customers that the function has been "temporarily disabled" and concerned users should keep an eye out for updates on the situation. Over on the PlayStation Twitter, customers have been either contacted through private direct message or directed to a generic FAQ support page.

While Sony has not confirmed why the functionality was disabled or even if it was done intentionally, it seems likely it was done to prevent users from purchasing PS Plus subscriptions at the current lower price knowing it will soon grant them premium benefits.

That’s super dumb of Sony. They really are getting more and more money hungry as time goes on aren’t they

One of the best/favorite things I could do when I was younger was to redeem all of the membership cards I’d get with my games to stack the amount of online time I had, since my parents could rarely afford more than a month here or there

If they are so afraid of people getting stuck with the lower price, than just stop making those cards and when they are used up, they are used up and we will all have to use the new more expensive ones. I feel like that isn’t a terrible solution

No, no, no. This article is so off base. Stacking PS Plus subs would not give anyone any type of benefit or discount whatsoever. They would have to stack both PS Plus AND PS Now. Stacking PS Plus would only stack them the lowest of the new tiers and would NOT grant anyone Premium benefits unless they also stacked PS Now. (Edit) They would then have to pay the difference from Essential to Premium once their PS Now sub ran out in order to keep the same benefits. 100% was not "it seems likely it was done to prevent users from purchasing PS Plus subscriptions at the current lower price knowing it will soon grant them premium benefits".

Maybe we could focus on games rather than pushing subscriptions, maybe I'm just getting older but I feel the game selection when I was a young lad was far superior to what we have now, it was a buy the console and play online if you wanted era of gaming. Between the Nintendo subscription, Game pass, and now a more expensive PS+, if companies are trying to push away the occasional gamer they're doing a good job. I've spent more time playing the new Kirby than I have on either my Series X or PS5.

Its the cycle of ego with Sony. Same shit happened during the PS3 era when they got ego driven from the success of the PS2 and it took them years to dig themselves out of that, only for the PS4 era to see them be the good guys again especially with what was going on with both Microsoft and Nintendo at the time.

The PS4 era was fantastic for them, so now they are back to the ego driven mentality with the PS5 era.

This doesn't seem to accord with what you are saying here.

I hear ya, except for the Kirby part. Short game unless you're going for 100% completion. :) But yeah. I may just drop both services once my stacked time on them expires in 2024 & go with Gamefly instead. Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation games all in ONE plan. PLUS 4K Blu-ray rentals. For less than paying for both of the other services. The only problem though could be online gaming. I guess I'd then just buy a few select titles on PC, as I really don't play much online to begin with. There's rumors though, that Sony may return to free online play.

Well. Except. The article is pretty much click bait. The entire Sony most likely doing it to prevent people from getting some kind of advantage thing is not an accurate statement for anyone to even make. It taking Sony years to dig themselves out of some kind of PS3 debacle is also not accurate. PS3 was outselling the 360 by a million units in the first 6 months alone. Imo the only reason the 360 ever exceeded PS3 sales at any point was becase of people having to buy another 360 after the one they had RRoD'd. I don't think there was ever some years long thing that Sony had to crawl out of from some deep dark pit.

Yes. it 100% does. It specifically states "those subscribed to both PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now". Sony has also stated very clearly in the past that PS Plus members will become PS Essential members, not Premium. As it says, you have to be subscribed to BOTH to get the Premium benefits. Stacking PS Plus alone does absolutely nothing but give them PS Essential.

You're completely wrong. Sony themselves stated only a few days ago "You can easily upgrade to a higher benefits plan at any time. To do so, you’ll need to pay the difference between your current plan and your new plan, adjusted for the remaining time of your subscription.”

stacking ps+ alone is enough, youd only need a month of psnow until the release of the new service

No. Lmfao. If you buy a month of PS Now, it will revert back to PS Essentials at the end of the 30 days PS Now.

The real winners are those who already stacked several years of PS+ when it was around $25/yr and recently topped it off with a couple months of PS Now to last thru June.

No. See above. I will bet a 12 month PS Premium sub on it that when a persons PS Now sub runs out, it will revert to PS Essentials.

Wouldn't surprise me next if they'd block users who have multiple accounts in other countries than the one they reside in.

Some people made 5-6 accounts just to get games cheaper... Yeah, I'd never do that.

It's odd. I am starting to think if they offer the higher tier PS+ at a monthly fee maybe just pay for a few months a year when I know I have time off work or things are slower, I honestly only have a few solid months where I get to play and its usually around Oct-Dec. It has always been affordable to get a year at once for $40 or so but if prices jump I may do say game pass for 3 months and leave it at that. WIth everything else going up in my budget I just feel this is a bad time to increase their service costs, although for someone who games a lot, or a teenager at home, maybe the value is there.

Absolutely. It's a much better deal for someone who games often as the price decreases if you get a 6 month sub, and decreases even more for a 12 month sub. Edit: In before someone says "Paying more is not a decrease!!!". Lmao. Obviously I was talking about the monthly price being reduced for longer subs.

You seem to have omitted the most important bit:

"will be automatically upgraded to the highest tier for the length of the longer subscription"

So they would be subscribed to Premium for the remaining duration of their PS Now subscription. I honestly don't see any way to read this the way you are claiming.

So no, if at the moment of the transition you have 5 years of ps+ and 1 month of ps now, it "will be automatically upgraded to the highest tier for the length of the longer subscription", AKA, the 5 years of the ps+, so you will have 5 years of premium, its literally explained
