Sonic Origins gets animated trailer, release date, pricing and new info revealed

SEGA can't seem to keep a lid on Sonic Origins. The upcoming game snuck onto the South Korean ratings board, then had its boxart pop up on the PlayStation Network, and now Australian PlayStation players can access what appears to be an accidental posting of the game's store listing.

In the listing, we've learned that Sonic Origins will offer two different ways to play the classic 16-bit era Sonic games: Classic Mode, which is exactly how the games looked in 4:3 aspect ratio and played, utilizing a lives system, on the Sega Genesis, and Anniversary Mode, an updated take on the games, with a 16:9 widescreen mode and removal of any risk of game overs.

There are also coins to be earned by completing missions, which will apparently unlock Special Stages, new animation intros for each of the games, and most interestingly, "new content". Sonic Origins will have a PlayStation 5 release, and currently has no exact launch date.

[UPDATE]

SEGA has finally given Sonic Origins a release date. A PR email from the company revealed that the game will be heading to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on June 23rd--Sonic's birthday--for £32.99. Multiple editions of the game will be available: if you pre-order Sonic Origins, you'll get mirror mode, 100 medalions, and a letter box with a Sega Genesis pattern. The digital deluxe version will get you difficult missions, characters in the main menu, island camera on the main menu, and exclusive tracks from the classic games, with most of those features left unexplained.

This may have been answered, but does anyone know if this release will include the original soundtrack from Sonic 3 or if they are going to do new music due to the MJ controversy stuff?

We don't know yet, they've not said or shown anything on the matter.
Likely safest assumption is that it'll probably use the recently-discovered prototype tracks, which were the original songs from before Jackson's team contributed.

Sega pissing away money just for people to pirate the Switch version two weeks early anyway. I don't think Denuvo has ever been more useless for protecting indie/classic games than it is right now.

In my case it's what held me back from impulsively hitting the preorder button, because then I had to look up Steam's refund policy for preorders because Sega has messed up Denuvo in the past and I plan on buying this with the Steam Deck in mind.

So far I haven't read anything specifically saying they'll be substituting the music, only level, gameplay and graphics options. It would be a pretty big omission from the marketing (illegal?).

The closest I've heard officially to anything music related is the "Classic Music Pack" which according to the Xbox page:
"Sonic Origins Classic Music DLC Pack features additioinal re-mastered music tracks from the Sonic universe."

Note: The typo is from the store page:

Yeah I'll buy it on Steam once they both remove Denuvo and lower the price. Until then, yarr harr mateys. Switch version should run perfectly on Yuzu/Steam Deck.

I'll just use one of the many Sonic 3 hacks if that's the case.
If it doesn't have the original music, I'm sure it will take five minutes for someone to make an unofficial mode that puts it back.

... The only downside is that the developers put a lot of work into getting the music in Sonic 1 & 2 sounding exactly right, and any such mod is unlikely to have precisely the same quality. But nonetheless.

How funny would it be if sonic 3 didn't have the original music cause... copyright? :ninja:

Something like this I'd expect to be announced in some form e.g. 'Sonic 3, now restored with the previously unreleased soundtrack!*', or even just being honest and saying 'we can't include it due to rights issues' somewhere on the page description.

It just sounds like a stupid omission to exclude, given the backlash it WILL cause if it happens.

*For any smart arses, yes I'm aware that it was in S3&K PC collection, it was just an example of what Sega could say for the MD/Gen remasters.

It could also be sold as dlc... you know, if you want more backlash :ninja:

I’m just imagining a Sega exec hiding behind a desk pointing his finger at Brad Buxer.
Pointing is easy, but is also rude. :P

Of course is just easy to assume why we don't get ports of old games like jet set radio future. I'm surprised they could even get tony hawk pro skater remakes with the same music from 20 years ago. Probably a good idea to just never use licensed content if it will just make problems for people in the future.

So they got the issue sorted out with Sonic 3's Ice Cap music I take it?

Speaking of Sonic 3, I love the music on the prototype ROM.
The original compositions (the ones that they changed out) sounded better to me. Especially Hydrocity and Carnival Night.

What they should probably being doing is HD remakes of the old classics.

After playing Sonic 2 on PS4's Genesis Classics Collection it made me realize how much this needs to be released. The Genesis Collection is nice, but the input lag kills it for me.

For the love of God, Sega, don't fuck it up again. :(

I don't know if funny is the right word.. more like insta-no buy haha.

Thread from Stealth (S3K developer) about the situation.
The replacement tracks will be cleaned up, finalized versions of the leaked prototype music by Jun Senoue. Which is honestly pretty damn cool.
