Sonic Origins gets animated trailer, release date, pricing and new info revealed

SEGA can't seem to keep a lid on Sonic Origins. The upcoming game snuck onto the South Korean ratings board, then had its boxart pop up on the PlayStation Network, and now Australian PlayStation players can access what appears to be an accidental posting of the game's store listing.

In the listing, we've learned that Sonic Origins will offer two different ways to play the classic 16-bit era Sonic games: Classic Mode, which is exactly how the games looked in 4:3 aspect ratio and played, utilizing a lives system, on the Sega Genesis, and Anniversary Mode, an updated take on the games, with a 16:9 widescreen mode and removal of any risk of game overs.

There are also coins to be earned by completing missions, which will apparently unlock Special Stages, new animation intros for each of the games, and most interestingly, "new content". Sonic Origins will have a PlayStation 5 release, and currently has no exact launch date.

[UPDATE]

SEGA has finally given Sonic Origins a release date. A PR email from the company revealed that the game will be heading to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on June 23rd--Sonic's birthday--for £32.99. Multiple editions of the game will be available: if you pre-order Sonic Origins, you'll get mirror mode, 100 medalions, and a letter box with a Sega Genesis pattern. The digital deluxe version will get you difficult missions, characters in the main menu, island camera on the main menu, and exclusive tracks from the classic games, with most of those features left unexplained.

I want it, but the collection is definitely lackluster and expensive. Effectively $10 each for these? I got ~50 Genesis roms + Sonic CD on Steam for much less. Sonic CD is already widescreen and Sonic 3 & Knuckles is with Sonic A.I.R. installed, so it's really $40 for widescreen versions of 1 & 2 and having it all available on console.
I mostly bought it for nostalgia. if you recall, sonic 1, a genesis, and a turbo controller were what I got from Nickelodeon during their Slime Time Sweepstakes, so sonic 1 especially holds a special place in my heart.

btw, @Glyptofane , I bought it for the ps5 instead of the switch mostly for the trophies. :P I have one more trophy to get in tales of arise before I platinum the game. it will be my first platinum ever since I got a platinum in Jak and Daxter 1, but that account is long banned, and I don't think I ever synced it.

I am absolutely extremely excited for this! I think it's well worth the $55 CAD for the Deluxe Edition, and I'm ready to show my daughter the classic games in a modernized way with some quality of life changes that won't make it a huge hassle to get through the games!

OH MY GOD, THE HYPE.

And by the way, transitions that combines all of the games? They're recreating Sonic Delta 40Mb, that's so cool.

I wonder if they're gonna fix some details present in past ports? I just tried playing Stealth-Taxman's Sonic 2 and I noticed that Super Sonic's idle animation doesn't loop as expected.

If you can't get Sonic Air to work well there is Sonic 3 Complete, not linking it due to legal reasons of course but is not that hard to find, just ignore the "play online" links in your search.

With Sonic 1,2, and CD mobile decompilation ports and Sonic 3 A.I.R. already available on Switch and PC, it's a hard sell for $45 for games I've already bought and played a bunch, especially considering how cheap Mania was when it released. I'll probably pick it up when it inevitably goes on sale for cheap, but I've got no sense of urgency to get it right away. The fact that they are charging extra for menu animations, missions, a 3D island viewer, and extra tracks is a little scummy, but it's just $5 more and is at least more than a straight port of the mobile releases. More aimed at Sega and definitely not Taxman, Stealth, or the rest of the team who made this widescreen compilation happen, Sonic Jam and the Mega/Gems Collections got way more love put into them than what Sega is doing lately.

All of those were straight emulation. How much more "love" do you want..?

I'm sure the price will plummet speedily, like all new releases.

I have to say.. those Ubisoft-esque charts make it look way worse than it is. I was expecting deluxe to be ~$60 (I've been conditioned by EA, Ubi, and Activision....) , so I was surprised it was only an additional $5. Still have to wonder if it's worth $5 for Hard missions, extra character animations in the menu (seriously Sega?), Camera animations, and (maybe this one is somewhat more worth it).... more music tracks.
I do agree about it being wrong to paywall the hard missions, even if they are separate from the main games.
I'll probably ask for this for my birthday which coincidentally is June 25 :)

Will the transparency effects of Sonic 1 now work on HD TV? I think it is called dithering. You know, the parts where you stand in front of a waterfall and see the background through it.
