Sonic Origins gets animated trailer, release date, pricing and new info revealed

SEGA can't seem to keep a lid on Sonic Origins. The upcoming game snuck onto the South Korean ratings board, then had its boxart pop up on the PlayStation Network, and now Australian PlayStation players can access what appears to be an accidental posting of the game's store listing.

In the listing, we've learned that Sonic Origins will offer two different ways to play the classic 16-bit era Sonic games: Classic Mode, which is exactly how the games looked in 4:3 aspect ratio and played, utilizing a lives system, on the Sega Genesis, and Anniversary Mode, an updated take on the games, with a 16:9 widescreen mode and removal of any risk of game overs.

There are also coins to be earned by completing missions, which will apparently unlock Special Stages, new animation intros for each of the games, and most interestingly, "new content". Sonic Origins will have a PlayStation 5 release, and currently has no exact launch date.

[UPDATE]

SEGA has finally given Sonic Origins a release date. A PR email from the company revealed that the game will be heading to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on June 23rd--Sonic's birthday--for £32.99. Multiple editions of the game will be available: if you pre-order Sonic Origins, you'll get mirror mode, 100 medalions, and a letter box with a Sega Genesis pattern. The digital deluxe version will get you difficult missions, characters in the main menu, island camera on the main menu, and exclusive tracks from the classic games, with most of those features left unexplained.

Am I going to pay $40 for ports of games I've played 200 times each, with improvements that have been available via ancient romhacks for years now? Does SEGA really think I care enough to see some cute animations to spice up my 2839th playthrough of S3&K?

...Well they were RIGHT
Someone bookmark this in case Chary ever complains about any other remakes!

They actually included Hidden Palace Zone in the release, those wonderful bastards. Still curious if the Drop Dash is in the games. And what's up with the Coins counter instead of a lives counter in the modern anniversary mode? Coins and rings seems kinda too similar, don't know what they're for, but they should have done a different collectible in my opinion.

I so wish they finally ported Knuckle's Chaotix. Come on guys, it's about time to free it from the 32x jail.

I hope they at least provide the Sonic & Knuckles passthrough mixes with the previous games.
While I wouldn't mind to see it again, it feels a bit too disconnected to be included in this particular collection. A solo HD remaster would be cool though.

I'll buy switch physical, if that's a thing. otherwise, it's the open ocean for me.

too bad about knuckles chaotic. and sonic 2 music (I'm assuming).

I feel cheated because I got the Sonic CD remake already, but having an official release of Sonic 3 & Knuckles alone is worth the price.

Sonic 3 is the one with the legal problems about the music, not 2.

I’m gonna get this because gameplay-wise this looks really good but from a marketing standpoint oof. Blows my mind that there’s a Ubisoft-style graphic that details all the different editions of a digital-only game. (There’s only two editions and 3 different sets of DLC)

Also no physical edition grrrr

A bit of info missing from the thread:

Headcannon (Stealth) developed the Sonic 3 & Knuckles remaster, alongside some new developers he hired - notably A+Start from the YouTube channel Son of a Glitch, who also made this awesome proof of concept Sonic Chaos remake. I love it when Sega hires fangame devs.

Christian Whitehead (Taxman) also announced his Retro Engine powers Sonic 3 here, and the Taxman/Stealth remakes of the other three games are the ones used. Some of the footage showed off Hidden Palace from Sonic 2 mobile.
That said, he wasn't directly involved with the Sonic 3 remaster's development.

Hell yeah! I played Sonic 1, 2 and CD to death on my phone(s) ever since they came out, and I don't mind paying for this collection if it includes a Sonic 3 & Knuckles remaster

Sonic Mega Collection seemed like a much better deal at the time, than this. The bonus stuff should really be standard.

I might pick this up when it goes on sale. I haven't really bought a Sonic collection since Mega Collection ages ago.

The chart really sucks at explaining things. Luckily it all looks like super minor stuff.
It's not gameplay altering DLC, but what they're charging for is ridiculous. Could give us unreleased/new levels... Not main menu animations.

Honestly I'd rather have dumb pointless DLC like this than locking actually interesting things beyond a paywall. Seems like we're getting all the fresh new content in the base game.
