New Elden Ring mods let you pause the game and unlock frame cap

FromSoftware's highly-anticipated Elden Ring released this week to rave reviews, scoring among the highest games of all time on MetaCritic. However, the game has been criticized on PC due to some performance issues, causing frequent framerate drops. Bandai Namco is planning to release a patch soon, but a new mod may be able to help in the meantime. Called "Elden Ring FPS Unlocker and more," uberhalit's mod on GitHub lets users remove the frame limit, add widescreen support, change the Field of View, and other small alterations. It does all this by patching the game's memory while running, and does not modify any game files. Another mod on NexusMods lets you bypass another polarizing decision in FromSoft games, giving players the option to pause the game.

However, despite the NexusMods page for "Pause the game" saying it is completely safe, that may not be entirely true. Both mods require users to disable the game's anti-cheat, which takes it offline (preventing seeing messages, summoning players, and all other online functionality). However, PC Gamer reports they received an "inappropriate activity detected" notification on their main menu, even when removing all mods before going online, a method that reportedly helped dodge bans in previous Souls games. While no bans have been issued at this point, Bandai Namco seems to be able to track the activity, so use these mods at your own risk.

A mod that allows you to pause the game?
"How dare you break one of Souls games' game-changing and mostly traditional feature!"
-probably some heretic out somewhere.

pause has been a staple in games since their inception, how am I suppose to take a dump and not get worried bout being killed?
Pausing hasn't been a staple since the inception of games. I'd guess that pausing was invented at the earliest, when video game systems for home use were made :D

I remember this legitimately being a big debate when BloodBorne came out. If you wanted to pause you were a pleb who needed to git gud

What happens in Elden Ring and the Souls games on the PS4 if you were to just press the PS button? Surely that pauses it...?

only good if you play offline afraid from invaders or if you went yarr harr, since there's the spyware that prevents cheat.

Yeah, they talk some rubbish, all this epeen nonsense over an average game/franchise, just because these kiddos like to have the creator tell them "hardest game ever".

Hilarious

There's a forbidden icon, I assume. Some games do that.
Not all games pause when you go to the Home Screen, and even those that do won’t always pause if you’re in a segment that wouldn’t allow it otherwise. Missed a bunch of cutscenes this way - games can just run in the background without you knowing.
Pausing is traditionally never allowed in Souls games. Probably because they have an online component to them? (which is why it makes you go offline to use the pause mod)
I believe it’s another aspect of the “punishing” Souls approach - if you open the inventory or you want to mess around with settings, you’re supposed to ensure you’re in a relatively safe area. Failing to do so is “your fault”, in a way - the game just doesn’t stop until you shut it off.

Adding a pause is cheating, my mind cannot be changed on that. OTOH, unlocking FPS and ultra-widescreen should be allowed without needing to turn off the anti-cheat.

FromSoft literally told us Elden Ring is their most accessible game yet, so this has nothing to do with it. Hell, playing offline and losing out on summoning other players in exchange for a pause is almost sure to make things harder on noobs.

What kind of shitty game doesn't allow you to pause? That's been an industry standard for decades now, and it's not like Soulsbornering whatever is a multiplayer game series - it's a singleplayer game series with multiplayer elements added for flavour. From Software should have added pausing by default!

Hard disagree. May as well add an easy mode while you're at it, and make co-op non-conditional. Oh let's also get rid of the dodge mechanic in favor of a perfect guard. Let's also make the weapons do sizeable damage to the bosses and give them only 1 static moveset.
