Okay, so, this switch I have I received already with jailbreak in place and even had RCM loader thrown in. And at least I was able to seemingly update Atmosphere.

but now that I'm ready to start installing games I keep running into the problem where I can't transfer them over to the sd card because they're too big. Being told I need to do exfat... well, at this point it seems like i can't even go into the sd formatting payload I remember seeing back then, either.

So, one of the downloads I wanted to do shows up as an NSZ. well, up to this point the only thing I've been able to use to install anything, is Goldleaf. And goldleaf won't even touch it. Out of curiosity, I then try the R-load thing to launch Tinfoil. Once again, it refuses to install; keeps bitching at me about being unable to do something with the ticket(s). But it has the option to let me select a payload.

Now, in hekate, I try to check how to change the file system, but it won't let me pick anything except FAT32. Does the Switch not support exFAT? I thought it did. If it doesn't, then what the heck do I do with some of these files that are obviously too big for the file system constraints? Well, the other problem is is that, even though I've both made an SD partition for the emuMMC and a file folder that is meant to be for emuMMC, it is refusing to boot to either. it just keeps saying "can't find /emummc " and "can't load HOS" or something and kicks me back again!

None of this is making any sense for me at this time, which is why I'm asking here about it.

FAT32 has a file size limit of 4GB.
Switch has support for exFat but that must be installed.
You probably installed the firmware without the exFat support.
Maybe try NS-Usbloader with GoldLeaf to install content from a PC/Mac directly.

About the errors with the emummc, either it wasn't prepared properly or you're maybe missing some settings in the INI file for hekate.
This is a good guide to get started : https://switch.homebrew.guide/

If you're using a Mac, note that a Mac sometimes sets the archive flag for files incorrectly when you copy them over to the Switch.
That makes them inacccessible on the Switch.
Hekate has a tool somewhere in one of the menus to fix that flag.

@codezer0 Exfat is not recommended and can lead to corruption. Is also unsupported by devs and they won’t help you if you run into problems while using exfat. Install your games over usb using something like ns-usbloader from pc and awoo on switch. Nsz, nsp, and xci’s are just containers. The files contained within are Les than 4gb and will install just fine on fat32. Installing over usb is also 50% faster than transferring and then installing. Time saver!!!

Follow the guide posted above to fix the errors your having with emummc!
Also, if you updates atmosphere your will also need to update sigpatches.

Well, reading through the sdsetup pages and the homebrew guide, I think my oopsie is that the options in nyx show:
cfw (sysnand)
cfw (emuMMC)
stock
fusee

... I completely forgot that fusee is how I launch atmosphere. D'oh...

still need to figure out how to install the games though. Not being able to has been irking me.

You can use TinWoo to install your games via USB cable, LAN/Internet, or directly from a USB external HDD, my preferred method. To install via USB cable or LAN, you'll also need to run NS-USBloader on your computer. All these methods install the game files without first copying the .nsp or .nsz file to your SD card, so you won't have a problem with FAT32's 4GB file limit.

The Switch technically does support exFAT but Nintendo's exFAT driver is horrible and frequently causes data loss and corruption. Therefore, it's better to just stick to FAT32.

If you just got your Switch, you should read a few guides to understand better what you're doing, and what you can or cannot do. You would know how to install sigpatches or install games through USB if you had done your homework first. Three guides... read them, understand them, and then ask questions if you have any left.

Ok so this is totally not pointed to you by any means @Dust2dust. However, I find it funny how everyone always points to other places. By places I mean outside of gbatemp. All info needed is here but hard to find even with the search button. Am I the only one that feels that way?

I understand what you're saying, and I must agree. It's sad that there isn't a good guide in-house here in gbatemp. Back in the Wii U days, there was a very good guide right here from Kafluke. He wanted to do the same for the Switch, but unfortunately, it never happened. So users have to turn to outside sources. The people who made these guides worked hard to make them as complete as possible. Their only gratification is for end-users to find them useful. That's why I feel no shame in recommending them, especially as there is no guide here.

What difference does it make if they're here or not? They're great, complete guides, made by knowledgeable people, offered for free. Except for the authors coming into your home to do it for you, it can't get any better than that.

To be honest, lately I've started to come across files nsz, that can be installed but not works. Just crash on start. If I decompress them to nsp, then they can be installed and played. No errors during installation.

Also they can be installed by DBI, but not tinwoo or tinfoil.

I checked - they are solid compressed, not block, so that's not an issue.

I guess there is no real difference and I’m appreciative for the work these authors do. Just about the ease of locating sources of the information one is inquiring!

I usually stay away from nsz’s and or anything created by the developer of tinfoil. This just personal preference do to things always been finicky for me. Others have great experiences. Find what works for you
