Here's an idea for a solution: If you have the vWii HBC (OHBC) and the HBC WiiVC inject (GamePad support) installed, maybe you can launch the WiiVC HBC using the GamePad, then going into the Wiimmfi disc patcher, and if you still have an original Mario Kart Wii disc, you can insert it into your Wii U and the app will temporarily patch the disc, and you can still use the GamePad as a Classic Controller, and you can play online via Wiimmfi. Any questions? I haven't tried that method out, but it's worth a shot!

EDIT: Just tried it a few minutes ago and it just kicks me back to HBC. So that's not going to work and it never will. So that means Mario Kart Wii with GamePad support cannot be played online via Wiimmfi.

As of today, we got the same 20100 error in every single WiiVC inject, and I mean EVERY. SINGLE. WIIVC INJECT. (This happens in not only Mario Kart Wii, but in every single game that supports it, including Super Smash Bros. Brawl.)

That's because a vc inject doesn't work with wiimmfi.

I hate to bump this old thread but I'm curious about this because I have a conflicting example. As noted on this other page, @xs4all had provided a few wiimmfi patched vWii injects on that old iso site before it was shut down, that could be installed directly to the Wii U menu and still maintain online functionality. I can confirm that as of today, 8/22/21, these injects they provided still work. I have their Project M wiimfi patched channel, and I just checked and was able to successfully connect online. Granted, no one else populated my lobby at this time, but I was online, it connected to 'Nintendo WFC' and allowed me to choose my fighters, item select, stage and all of that. So there does seem to be something that can be done about this, but it's not well docummented, and as far as I can tell, only @xs4all may be the only person around that might know.

So, if me mentioning you a couple of times has called your attention, any chance you could let us know what you did to get wiimmfi to work with Wii Injects like you had before @xs4all ?

Nothing special was done, pretty much downloaded the wiimmfi iso patcher, patched Wii ISO game before injecting, tested to make sure it worked before putting it out for others to try.

Of course you will get errors if the game hasnt been wiimmfi patched, since Nintendo shut down WFC.

Since my wiimmfi injects are still working after all these years as tested by MikaDubbz, then it looks as though nothing much has changed in the wiimmfi community for these Wii online games that are compatible with wiimmfi. On the top of my head there was an updated version of the wiimmfi iso patcher back in the day after my injects was done, but it didnt seem to affect, as it was still able to go online.

For that user to simply say it doesn't work out of thin air without providing any evidence or reason should be taken with a grain of salt because I injected a few games in the past with wiimmfi support, they worked back then and there shouldnt be any reason why it shouldnt work now.

People have to remember, the game they want to play online must be supported within wiimmfi, so games like Mario Kart Wii still have a cult following to be played online.

Well the game I'm trying to play is definitely supported by Wiimfi, it's Mario Kart Wii Deluxe: http://wiki.tockdom.com/wiki/Mario_Kart_Wii_Deluxe and I patched it and everything, it can play online when booted through USBLoader GX, but wont connect when installed as a Wii U channel, unlike your Project M channel anyway.

Interestingly, I also have your Mario Kart Wii channel that connected through Wiimfi, and that one can no longer connect. So it seems that something about how Mario Kart connects online compared to the likes of Smash is prohibiting it to connect when launched as a Wii U channel. The Wiimfi website does explain that Mario Kart needs to be approached differently for Wiimfi these days than other online Wii games in regard to patching, so maybe that has something to do with it. But it looks like MKWii and it's mods simply can't be both a Wii U channel and connect to Wiimfi at the same time at this time.

Just having a look at the wiimmfi change log, a lot has changed since back in the day with my working wiimmfi injects.

https://wiimmfi.de/changelog

So it could be a matter of re injecting the game again and setting up the dns as stated on the wiimmfi site?
Thing is, I did all of that and still no luck. Others say the Wiimmfi team are aware of the issue and trying to address it, but have had no luck. I can't find confirmation of that, but it seems to be true for others who have tried recently.

If this is the case, then what ever the changes they made broke wiimmfi on Wii VC inject.

If you couldnt get it to work, then most likey I cant too.

So I stand corrected, wiimmfi used to work as a Wio VC inject with wiimmfi patched iso, but not now.

But it's weird, cuz some games still work. Seems like MKWii is the real problem for some reason.

MKWii has been updated back in 2018, it can now update itself and download updates from Wiimmfi when connecting to the server so we can fix and patch the game without requiring patcher updates. That process requires SSL / HTTPS, which the Wii VC method does not support.

Games other than MKWii don't have that kind of updater so they probably continue working as a VC inject. To get MKWii working again, someone would either need to find a way to patch the WiiVC fw.img to include SSL support, or figure out another secure way to download data from Wiimmfi (without a MITM being able to modify it) from inside a game.

So the only way we can play online is by having the legit disk and then changing the connection dns or using that wiimmfi patcher utility for the homebrew launcher (wii)? I despite buying second hand products let alone used game disks from decades ago

As far as I'm understanding, you can still use a copied (iso) version on Wiimmfi just fine. You just can't inject that into an installable Wii "virtual console" game, you have to go to vWii mode and use a USB loader there.

Good to know, shame how this injection method doesn't work because i rather this much more than having usb loaders, but hey i'll still try this alternative soon enough.

Does this also has to do with the fact i'm using that custom DNS which forbids wii u firmware updates to be downloaded (and other nintendo services such as the eShop)? Idk if someone has ever wondered this rn 🤔

Edit: nvm, changing the dns back to automatic still doesn't do anything

It would be very convenient to use the gamepad on mkwii online but unfortunately it is not possible and I had to make do by putting the game in the vwii and using the wiimote, however it be possible through some homebrew maybe use the gamepad in the vwii?
