New Sony patent hints at a possible PlayStation mobile gaming controller

longshock.png

A new patent published by Sony Interactive Japan hints at the company possibly trying to make a bigger foray into the mobile gaming market. The document, which was discovered by VGC, shows a depiction of a DualShock 4 controller, but with an elongated center where the touchpad normally would be. Presumably, you would place the phone into the controller, much like with other popular mobile gamepads, such as the Razer Kishi or GameSir X2. This would be in line with Sony's previous statement from May 2021, where CEO Jim Ryan claimed iconic Sony IPs would be headed to mobile platforms in 2022, and with the company's hiring of the former head of Apple Arcade. As this is just a patent, things can change before any official release, if the device ever gets to that point in development.

Why would sony do another handheld console when both the psp and vita didn't do that well.

But the gates are open for the nintendo fanboys to start ranting ohh they're copying nintendo again...... like nintendo invented the idea of a tablet playing games.
the PSP sold 80 million. That is really good for their first try at a portable console.

Vita didn't even get its own Gran Turismo, that's sad.

Yeah, you could play GT PSP, but would've been nice to have a GT game utilize Vita's potential.
Sony screwed the Vita and they know it.

Ah, gotcha.

Well, luckily, landscape mode on the home screen and apps have improved lately, depending on the Android phone you have. So everything can be done in landscape mode, and you can control it all with your controller, keyboard included. Of course, you can also hold the controller with one hand and still use the touch screen with your other hand for typing and using the phone that way.
Hmm maybe android has been updated since I last tried with my s20 from samsung

Cause I could never use the keyboard with my Xbox controller

IMO, PS Vita is a great console! Honestly, I still don't understand why it failed as it did.

I'm very happy as a Vita user, even though I got mine a few years after Sony stopped its production and support. And now they want to close the PS Store for Vita and PS3, so hacking is the only way for any new users.

I would be glad to welcome a successor for PS Vita... :D

well psp was competing with the ds that sold 150.2 million so it was kinda like xbox one and ps4 where xbox one sold near 50 and ps4 sold over 100 million, although it sold decently it lost to its competition by almost twice the number, the vita im not even gonna mention the numbers vs the 3ds...

the problem is nintendo always had studios working on their portables so it would get exclusive portable AAA games where sony didnt.

they made like 4 or 5 titles themselves and then the 3rd partys had to fill the rest, in the psp time the strategy worked, the 3rd party stuff stepped up and made it go, when the vita came around the huge price on release(almost as a current gen home console) the sales didnt pick up, and sony made like 3 or 4 games again but 3rd partys didnt bother to support it due to such low sales numbers so the console died a miserable death.

Difference between nintendo and sony is nintendo can live with its own exclusives and ips alone, sony relies heavy on 3rd party support to maintain their consoles since they cant release as much games in house as nintendo does every year, even worse now that every sony exclusive takes like 4 years per game.

Vita was like paradise for JRPG gamers. So, while the games were good, it was a very specific crowd.

Sony no longer has any will to live in the same handheld space as Nintendo after the DS and 3DS dominated. The only viable successor to the Vita is the Switch.
They should have never tried to do handheld gaming because they failed twice, if not three times (if you count the PocketStation).

PSP was pirated the shit out of it and Vita.. It existed.

That being said, it's formidable to see Sony porting PS games to PC. It's possible we'll see Gran Turismo on PC, maybe not 7, perhaps Sport to test the waters. :)

PSP didn't fail. The Vita wouldn't have happened if the PSP bombed.

the DS is literally the 2nd best selling console of all time. 80 million is more than just okay.

The software wasn't selling, but the hardware was because it was easy to pirate?

I remember as a teen I bought a PSP Slim 2000 and then had it hacked afterwards. My buddies did the same.

And the PSP Go, that was released ahead of time as no one liked the idea. Now? Yeah, it's an awesome little handheld (too little for my hands).

By that logic the ds failed too. Flashcards were stupid easy to obtain until the early 2010s. Piracy had nothing to do with anything. Hell, the Wii must have been Nintendos worst console pre 2010.

Sony broke any chances the Vita had by offering a much worse bang for your buck on the system. The memory cards alone were an insult. Sure they were ahead of most microSD cards in terms of performance but the greater population doesn't give a damn about an couple percent faster loading, but they do care about paying nearly double or triple for the same space. That and they could have just licensed out microSD cards that perform to expectations.
Combine that with the huge amount of teased but ultimately cancelled games (like no GTA which sold a lot of PSP systems) and for most people in the west it just wasn't worth getting one.

The vita could have done so much better with cheaper storage and better blockbusters instead of just remakes and ports.
