Like the title says, I have a Wii U with CBHC on it and it can load Wii U discs just fine, but when I go into the vWii and insert a Wii disc, it says "unable to read the disc". I double-checked that my console is from the US and so are all of my Wii games. Does anyone have any reason why it isn't working? I could try cleaning the lens, but I didn't think that would be the problem since it's reading the Wii U discs. The only thing I can think is something with installing CBHC affected it somehow. I don't have homebrew installed on the vWii but I can if that'll help for some reason. Thanks in advance for the help!

CBHC shouldn't affect functionality of vWii at all. Im assuming these are original games youre trying to play from disc? Backups won't work through the disc drive even with homebrew. You can however load backups through USB using homebrew but I digress.

If you're using original non imported games, I would try cleaning the lens and see if that makes any difference. If not perhaps USB loading would be another solution. Honestly USB loading is so much faster than loading from disc anyways

Yeah, I use cbhc as well. Not sure why that would happen. I don't have a single wii game though to test on my setup. Well, I might have wii sports somewhere.

yeah, I have USB loading set up for my Wii U games and probably will set it up for Wii and GameCube games at some point as well, but I more just wanted to be able to play the discs that I do have until I've set up loading it from a USB. I guess I'll try cleaning the lens and see if that works for some reason. I just find it really bizarre that the Wii U discs load fine but the Wii discs don't. If anyone else has any other suggestions, please feel free to let me know.

The vwii should use a different laser than wiiu discs, so it's possible that that laser is failing.
Oh does it? I tried researching it to figure out whether that was true or not. I thought that made sense but wanted to figure out for sure. Can anyone confirm that? I guess I'll try cleaning the lens and look into replacing things if that doesn't fix it. I wonder if I'd need to replace the whole disc drive or if I could replace that specific piece used to read Wii discs.

Thanks, I appreciate you checking that. I guess that's the thing that makes the most sense, so I'll look into how to fix it from here.
For the case that carefully cleaning the laser doesn't resolve the problem:
Keep in mind that the Wii U drive (board) is tied to the motherboard. If you order another drive online it won't work by swapping the complete thing. The Wii U throws an error when it doesn't find the exact drive board it came with (and the operating system refuses to work because of that error).
[Just for reference: Defect that prevents the Wii U finding the drive board]

There are a lot of comments of the type "I ordered three different Wii U drives from different sellers and none worked!" (I think it was on ifixit.com)
You need to keep your original drive board and install it to a drive you ordered online.
======

The easiest is of course ignoring the drive and switching to USB loading.

One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
