Bethesda reveals Skyrim Anniversary Edition price and upgrade for last-gen owners

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been a landmark title, ever since it was released in 2011. In the ten years since its launch, the game has been ported to a multitude of platforms, and has been on every Xbox and PlayStation home console since the PS3 and 360. We're about to see yet another release of Skyrim, with the impending Skyrim Anniversary Edition, coming out early next week. The initial reveal of the game didn't offer any details on how much it'd cost to buy this version of Skyrim, let alone for players who have already purchased the game multiple times in the past. Now, Bethesda has informed players what to expect.

Skyrim Anniversary Edition will be priced at $49.99 on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. However, if you own Skyrim Special Edition, you'll be able to upgrade to the new release for $19.99. Those that want to play the game on either Xbox Series X|S or PlayStation 5 will be able to simply buy the PS4 or XB1 release, and will reportedly get better graphics and loading times on the current generation systems. Achievements will carry over from either Xbox version, however the same can't be said for trophies between the PlayStation 4 and 5 versions. New to this release of Skyrim will be Creation Club content, including a survival mode.

Skyrim Anniversary Edition will fittingly be out on Skyrim's 10th anniversary: November 11th.

Urgh... This is getting tiresome. Why not do something people would love. Like re-release Morrowind and Oblivion. Or better yet, remake Arena or Daggerfall.

This was such a great game to play back in the day. I think is a good way for players that have never entered on the Skyrim world. I'll pass, but yeah it's pretty good game. Had a blast with it.

Kinda sucks that the Switch version won't get a similar update/upgrade, but that is understandable. The Switch, while an innovative console, isn't powerful enough to support the Anniversary content + Creation Club content... though I may be wrong.

As someone who has modded the shit out of Bethesda titles. All CC content just needs the .esl and .ba2 files for each and a current version of Skyrim (which typically you have already). Literally nothing is there to stop anyone sailing the high seas if they already own the game...

I'll give my money to (and have before) the modders on the nexus developing free (and arguably better) content before buying any CC content.

Seeing how they want $50 for a fucking re-release with an updated executable and a possibly a new Skyrim.esm and an actual fucking code for the CC content, Just blows me away.

I feel bad for anyone who plays this on console as they are honestly treating console users as console peasants... At least offer a physical edition with "everything" on a physical format for fuck sake...

PSA: According to Kotaku, a lot of what's being added in the Anniversary Edition is actually going to be a free update even for people who don't upgrade.

What happens if I don’t buy or upgrade to Skyrim Anniversary Edition?

You’ll still get a ton of stuff, assuming you already own the Special Edition. The new fishing mechanic will be a free update to everyone, as will specific pieces of Creation Club content including a new set of quests called Saints & Seducers, new Rare Curios items, and Survival Mode where players can freeze to death.

Skyrim is also getting a PS5 and Xbox Series X/S version in the future that will be free for all existing owners of either the Special Edition or Anniversary Edition to upgrade to.
