After setting the time on the flashcart itself and powering off, the clock either resets to the default time (year 2000), or to the year 2085 or something. Is this caused by a flat battery or is there something else at play here?

Did u replace the battery and test to see if it still happened?

From your description, the probability is that the battery is nearly dead, because if there is a problem with the crystal oscillator, either it is unable to boot, or the clock is jumping like crazy at the kernel interface.

You can try to replace the battery (CR1025), Or use a multimeter to measure the voltage (3V for normal, 1.3V for minimum) of the battery if you can not buy batteries for the time being.

I'll have to wait until they arrive. Believe it or not, I don't happen to have CR1025s lying around.

It only jumps ahead a few decades after turning it off and on again. So, it doesn't really happen while I'm staying at the kernel interface. If it's been powered off for an hour or so and I turn it back on, it's back to 1/1/2000. I guess that's a relief if it isn't the crystal oscillator?

It would be very interesting if it was a dead battery already. The DE was released last year wasn't it?

DE is sold from the beginning of 2021, considering that the batteries are purchased and installed in large quantities, there may indeed be individual batteries with health problems, although they can pass our factory inspection, but the actual voltage may be insufficient.

The new batteries finally arrived. After replacing, I set the time in the kernel interface, shut the GBA off and turned it back on after a few hours. The time matched up with my desktop perfectly. It looks like it was just a dead battery after all. Thanks. It's stuff like this that has me thinking more and more that I should get a decent multimeter.
