Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake announced for PS5, will be timed console exclusive

Sometimes, rumors get it right, as proven by this year's earlier rumor that Aspyr Media was working on a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. Originally released by BioWare in 2004, KotOR, the remake of the incredibly popular classic title will be released exclusively on PlayStation 5, at least, for a short while. For those worried about a PC port, it'll have a simultaneous release with the PS5 version. Aspyr will be in charge of the ground-up remake, having plenty of prior experience porting games to various platforms over the past 20 years, including having ported the original Knights of the Old Republic to macOS back in the day.

AUSTIN, TexasSept. 9, 2021 — Aspyr, Lucasfilm Games, and Sony Interactive Entertainment (“SIE”) have announced Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™ - Remake, a new remake of the original revered Star Wars™ story and blockbuster role-playing game experienced by millions of fans around the world. In development as a PlayStation®5 (PS5™) console exclusive at launch and for PC, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake is completely rebuilt from the ground up for a new generation of players to experience this legendary tale as never before. The news was revealed today in a teaser trailer during the ‘PlayStation Showcase 2021’ featuring the iconic imagery of Darth Revan and the voice-over talent of Jennifer Hale, who played Bastila Shan in the original game.

“We’ve spent the past several years assembling the very best talent from across the industry to deliver a modern vision of this timeless Star Wars legend,” said Aspyr co-founder Ted Staloch. “As lifelong Star Wars fans with extensive experience working with many of its best games, we have the deepest love and admiration for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and cannot wait to share this amazing remake with the rest of the galaxy.”

Development of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - Remake is led by a newly created team composed of industry veterans at developer and publisher Aspyr, working in close collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. Aspyr and Lucasfilm Games have worked together in recent years to bring multiple classic Star Wars titles to modern platforms, including the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The game will be published on PS5 by SIE, while the PC version of the game will be published by Aspyr.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic stands out among the Legends of Star Wars storytelling, and we’re thrilled to be joining with Aspyr and Sony to remake this Legend for a new generation of players,” said Douglas Reilly, VP, Lucasfilm Games. “Our teams have been working closely and share a deep commitment to honoring what fans love about the original, while bringing new fans on this incredible journey.”

“Nearly 20 years after its debut, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remains one of the most highly requested remakes from the PlayStation community,” said Eric Lempel, SVP, Head of Global Marketing, Sony Interactive Entertainment. “The time is finally right to bring this dream to life for both diehard fans and those who have yet to experience it.”

First released in 2003, the award-winning Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic still stands today as a landmark achievement, frequently ranked among the greatest video games of all time. A pinnacle of Star Wars Legends storytelling, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is set around 4,000 years before the events of the original trilogy, introducing a new cast of heroes and villains in an epic struggle for the fate of the galaxy. The game is beloved by fans and has been praised by critics for its deeply engaging narrative, memorable characters, sense of immersion and discovery, and choice-based gameplay.

Too bad they won't bring Chris in, as he's been cancelled. Would be good if he got the chance to better bridge KotoR 1 and 2.

At this point it could be a train wreck. The Star Wars lore and cannon at the time the original game was made; was still salvageable for the most part. The worst thing that had happened aside of the prequel movies, was the Clone Wars TV series. Other than that though, Dark Horse comics were keeping it real, some of the book authors were trying to keep things real, and the people behind this story line were trying very hard to keep it real. Then Disney bought Star Wars, and Star Wars became a full on commercial, regardless of the fact that it "felt" that way before. I wonder now if they will switch up the story to favor the new Cannon some how, or if they might change it so as to add a new unnecessary twist for those of us who already beat the original.

Assuming they don't change it and only fine tune the play experience and presentation, then I am down. I'd also love to see the sequel redone and completed this time, as a LOT of content was cut from it and you could feel it. Lastly the legendary 3 should still happen, which is what I hope all of this is leading up to.

Honestly I'd rather they just do a remaster, a full-on remake has a 50-50 shot at being amazing or terrible. Especially if they take away the tactical real-time with pause combat which was such a staple of KoTOR and Dragon Age Origins.

Personally, I hope they do revamp it. I'm always drawn to Biowares games for the great stories, but find the combat and overall gameplay mechanics to be a cumbersome, slow, mess... so much so that I've never been able to bring myself to finish any of them - including the original KOTOR (which I still own for OG Xbox).

The fact that they hired someone to work on it that said her favorite was absolutely not kotor, and dislikes everything pre-rey saga makes me a little worried for this.
