Publisher Assemble Entertainment and developer Tiny Roar announced their new game today: XEL. It is described as a game inspired by the Zelda series where you will need to solve puzzles, explore dungeons and battle robots and wildlife as you help the amnesiac protagonist explore and unravel the mysteries of land she finds herself in. An announcement trailer for XEL was released today giving us a look at some early alpha footage:

XEL follows an amnesiac protagonist named Reid, who finds herself shipwrecked on an enigmatic world with no memory of her previous life. Players will join Reid as she sets out to get to the bottom of the mystery behind this bizarre land filled with secrets, puzzles, and a not-so-stable sense of time. Explore a beautiful overworld dotted with challenging dungeons in a classic, top-down, 3D action-adventure format in a rich, vivid palette. During her quest Reid will meet charming, enduring characters, engage in thrilling combat, and of course, find and upgrade a whole bevy of nifty weapons, items, gadgets, and moves — some of which may help her jump through space and time.

Key Features of XEL include:
  • Sci-fi Dungeon Diving: The world of XEL features a vast, extensive overworld and challenging, Zelda-like dungeons to explore
  • A Deep Combat System: Become proficient at using a variety of attacks and combos, while dodging, and parrying to tackle and take out foes
  • Gadgets & Guns: Master and upgrade your weapons, shield, and gadgets to smash your foes and open up new areas to explore
  • Deep Lore and a Deeper Mystery: What exactly happened to this world, and who is responsible? Piece together a captivating story and dive into the legends behind the cryptic history XEL
  • Spacetime? Not a Problem: Unlock special abilities that allow Reid to bend the rules of space and time, grantingher access to previously impassable areas and opening up new ways to defeat difficult enemies
XEL is expected to launch in Q2 2022 on Steam, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5.

I'll be hesitant on this one. I remember the hype surrounding windbound, which I bought. I haven't played it yet, lost interest after seeing all the bad reviews. heard it's more a survival type game, but pretty boring.

so because its got a cartoonish style, open world, top down view and has dungeons its zelda inspired?

why is it anything anyone does after nintendo doing what others have already done, makes it zelda inspired?
Because the developer literally stated that they were inspired by Zelda... yikes

It's OK, spidermans just a bit crabby since his trailer got leaked online.

All he needs is a bottle, his pacifier and a nap and he'll be right as rain.

actually that snippet was added by no wonder, gbatemp.

if you care to visit the dev website which describes the game, mentions nothing of it been inspired by zelda, yet again we have this site taking news and addin their own view to the article, as loads seem to think if a game comes out that may look similar, gbatemp adds its either copying or inspired or mention zelda.

here is the original statement from tinyroar
XEL is a 3D action-adventure set in a sci-fi fantasy setting.
Play as Reid, shipwrecked on the strange world of XEL.

Without any recollection of her former life, it is up to you to unravel her past and connection to XEL. Ready your sword and shield as you explore the overworld of XEL and dive into imposing dungeons full of unforeseen threats and challenging puzzles. Throughout your journey you will make new friends and foes, learn new moves, find new gadgets as well as being able to jump through time and space.

As Reid delves deeper into the mysteries surrounding XEL, she discovers an endless cycle of peril. Will she be able to break free from it and what will it take?

But ohh no, the nintendo fanboy flood games have opened, let the fanboys rush to defend commence lol.

it's a marketing thing, no one know what XEL is, they do know what Zelda is, so just by having Zelda inspired it can get more clicks and maybe sales

"What is XEL about? It's an adventure game that the developer states is a “Zelda-like” that takes inspiration from Nintendo's revered series. The game will tell the story of Reid, the playable character who wakes up with a bad case of amnesia in a world she doesn't know and with no memory of her life before that moment."

Yup, so steam writes up an article (my bad) they mention it been a zelda inspired game, not the dev, their website which is almost word for word identical to what steam have taken, but thrown reference to zelda, ok so gbatemp didnt add it, the editor who posted the news on steam did.

but on their official site, as said, mentions nothing about been inspired by zelda.

i dont get why whenever someone releases a game that may look similar to zelda, its inspired as if nintendo was the first to do it.

anyway, this game looks decent and might give it a try.

Actually, it's the dev's responsibility to set up their store page. As it states in the Steam's documentation for developers.

Man I'm such a fanboy when I hear of such things, I only want the official Zelda games to be the only ones like it. :P

Good luck to the devs though, I feel there's a lot of potential for games that take the best of the series and combine it for an even better experience, it just has to be done right.
