A prototype of Gears of War 3 for the PlayStation 3 has been made available online

Gears of War, a series known for its exclusivity to Xbox consoles, was once in development for a Sony system. A prototype build of Gears of War 3 for the PlayStation 3 has been uploaded by its owner to the internet, preserving the unreleased game. PixelButts, the one behind the "leak" described the beta as a demo build that Epic Games was working on in order to test how the engine ran on the PS3. The build was created exactly 10 years ago, in May 2011, but remained unusable and unplayable until last year. According to the Archive.org post, the game will not run on anything except specifically devkit PS3s, as they have extra RAM that helps the game to run. Currently, PS3 emulator RPCS3 does boot the game, but cannot get past the title screen. While the public release of the prototype is new, gameplay footage has previously been documented running on a devkit, and can been seen in the video linked above.

This is an archive of the original data built by Epic Games on May 19 2011 for Gears of War 3 for PS3 systems. Originally created during an engine test, and leaked 10 years ago and remained unusable data while circulating between collectors and exchanging hands. I was the first person to get this data working 9 years later, and decided now that it's time to release it on the 10th anniversary of this build being made (May 19 2021). To date, this is the only Epic-made data for a PS3 version of the game, as all others have been made with leaked source code.

Well this is new. It'd be really nice if they decided to switch exclusivity to Sony consoles so Microsoft could stop making consoles permanently.

Neat, would love it if the RPCS3 devs could get this booted and running properly. Always was curious to see if a build of this would ever leak back when someone showed off the official build. IIRC it's mostly playable, too, just has performance issues and two levels can't be finished (one of which is the final boss cuz of script errors or something ).

But still, real nice to have beta stuff like this surface.

I did get the beta of gear of war 3 on the 360 after its leak. betas or games downloaded from the dev store have orange boxes instead of green. I've had a few other games like that. anyway, I remember the beta had green boxes appearing at random when I played it. I think it was incomplete at the time.

Well, I wonder if this will be playable on PC by the end of the year...
It's actually already playable on Xenia, for the most part. There are still a couple bugs, and you have to edit some config files in the game files to fix some graphical bugs, but a few people claim they were able to finish the game.

I remember this. the reason you need more ram is that the 360 uses shared ram, so the OS's ram can be used for games. the ps3 doesn't allow for this, and this is the main reason most multi-console games run better on the 360.
right but not really. The 360 has one shared pool of memory (512MB) that can be dynamically allocated between video and game memory, PS3 has fixed 256MB for VRAM and 256MB of RAM (which is not fully available since there are system processes) for everything else. Both of them do reserve some memory for system operations, but since the console have limited multitasking capabilities, the system dont require as much memory as recent consoles or other devices such as PCs and smartphones.

I just want GoW 2 or 3 on Steam with improved netcode, fresh coat of graphical touch-ups optional. Multiplayer was so much fun, even despite all the shit talk on voice chat.
I'd love to have GoW2 come back in all its glory.. Especially at 240fps. Hnnnghhh

That's the stupidest thing I've heard in awhile.
Why do you say that? I'd really appreciate if Microsoft stopped making consoles so all of their games could be on better consoles. That sounds like a completely reasonable thing to want.

Yeah I'm sure Gears going to Sony would be the nail in the coffin for Microsoft. They're pretty poor anyway and almost dead and Gears would kill it. *rolls eyes*

It is said they have not had one profitable year of Xbox since it first started. They have so much money they don't care.

Besides, Microsoft owns the rights to Gears not Epic, so good luck.

My point as that Gears is like their only exclusive right now outside of Halo.
