Nintendo announces Game Builder Garage, where you can make your own games

"Anyone can be a game programmer", is the tagline to Nintendo's latest first-party title. The newly-revealed Game Builder Garage goes beyond the idea of a Mario Maker, letting you build anything that you can think of. Opening the floor to anyone that's willing, Game Builder Garage, is, as the name implies, a game making game that simplifies the process greatly. You'll be able to go through step-by-step lessons that show you how to make a game, where you'll be able to swipe through concepts and apply them to your game. A teaser trailer shows tons of possibilities, from simple undefined platformers, to fully-realized games from varying genres. Games can be shared with others, and friends can play finished projects, or help further build upon them. Game Builder Garage is due out on the Nintendo Switch on June 11th of this year.

if there is real truth in that statement it will be a shame, nintendo stuck to their guns for calling themselves a family based game product!

the switch was their saving grace but not sure how much longer they can do it for.. their next game console and line up of games needs to be mind blowing... who thinks they will go down the headset route for VR Mario?

Actually looking at an IGN article it looks like 85 million switches sold... fair play to them
Yes Nintendo is doomed. We know. Near 100 millions of Switches sold, but Nintendo is doomed. Happy?

This strikes me as a tad passive aggressive of Nintendo or is it just me? It's like they're fed up with all the criticism and this is their way of saying "let's see you do better, smartass."

To be honest, this seems to have less value than something like SmileBasic. and quite primitive compared to Dreams I could even say that this looks more primitive than MIT Scratch.
I may be wrong on this, but knowing Nintendo they probably won't let you design and share your own assets other than the code.

WarioWare D.I.Y. is that you?

That game really started a love of game-making in me as an adolescent. Here's hoping this game does the same for some folks. It's fun to imagine there are kids out there who will connect with this game as deeply as I did with DIY... but hey this better have a music maker in it too, I still use the one in DIY once or twice a year lol.

interesting, i might consider letting my kid sate his need for "Maker" type games with this

the nonsense he does on other games like this..... reminds me of me when i was ... not his age but a little bit older as they had yet to invent those things..... did have mario paint tho.... i could make pictures of the games i wanted to design..... lil later was RPG maker

how annoyed i was that i couldn't share those with my friends.... only show em when they came over, which doesn't really work out... a single player game for a party? oh i do hope multiplayer is a thing he can do with this

My thoughts: it's cool! I quite enjoy the concept, it reminds me of Scratch. Not bad for $30. SmileBASIC 4 and Fuze exist for about the same price but they're also much more complex than this. So I'd say that if you're less experienced with stuff, this is your best bet, even though in theory you can do more with SB4.

Wonder what they'll call their custom scripting language: SwitchScratch? :P

Also, RIP poor Smilebasic and Fuze : (
No, this is nice and all for making basic games, but if you want to make really specific things, like an emulator something like smilebasic is still better. And visual scripting can get messy after a while. (I also made a scratch-like programming lang in smile basic 3ds https://smilebasicsource.com/?p=page-394 It's ok I guess...)

TBH this looks like shit, 3D Models are given, customised sprites look just bad in the 3D world.

I remeber the shoot em up Construction kit back on the C64 and Amiga, just from the looks it seems better then this.

You really think you can do complex games with this Nintendo software? Dream on.

Yup... I can see how the future will look like. A free downloadeble platform for hundreds of 2d clones from any ip before 16 bit, but suspiciously nothing that mimicks anything by Nintendo
