Sony decides to keep PS3 and Vita PlayStation Store access alive instead of shutting it down

Urrrrntitled.png

Sony will no longer be killing off support for the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita. Last month saw the official announcement that both systems would no longer be able to purchase new digital games or access the PlayStation Store, but that decision has been walked back. This is because Sony saw the passionate outcry of fans upset about the closure, and so the PS3 and Vita will be able to work as they have been. However, the PSP's access will still be going offline as previously planned, on July 2nd.

When we initially came to the decision to end purchasing support for PS3 and PS Vita, it was born out of a number of factors, including commerce support challenges for older devices and the ability for us to focus more of our resources on newer devices where a majority of our gamers are playing on. We see now that many of you are incredibly passionate about being able to continue purchasing classic games on PS3 and PS Vita for the foreseeable future, so I’m glad we were able to find a solution to continue operations.

This needs to be applauded, big time.

they made the wrong move, the Internet backlashed, and they reversed course.

The Vita has a resurgence following too especially, makes sense they'd want to capitalize on digital sales.

I went on a buying spree when I got mine in 2019

I'd say (as a Vita/PS3 owner myself) Sony needs to grow a pair and follow through with their plans. They obviously have the information on whether they're making money on Vita/PS3 at this point, and they decided they weren't making enough. Abandoning Vita was a no brainer, because they did that in what, 2015? Vita was never coming back, that ship had sailed. Did Sony ever make their investment back on the PS3? I know I've read an article or two about how Sony would never recoup on their Blu-Ray investments, and the Cell in the PS3 was another huge wad of cash that I don't think they made back.

There are still only two PS4 games I want to play (Last Guardian and Death Stranding) and one of them is on other platforms now, so why would I ever give Sony more money? And then there's what's his face at Sony Bend saying "buy our games at full price because we're not going to make more if you don't" because it's really fucking expensive to make AAA games these days. So like, さようならフェリシア.

I thought the problem is also not allowing patches to download too

There were a few patches that went off not all I'm pretty sure. But it's moot now they're not closing it.

They should put the stores on PS5 IMO, but I don't see that happening.

I hope we can get everything before the time that it actually happens.

They probably got a lot of negative feedback on trying to close them maybe they just won't close them if they learned their lesson.

But Microsoft does it too, you can't buy Forza Horizon 3 on PC anymore unless someone's selling a key and they jack up the prices, and it's not cracked for latest Windows 10 update.

If Sony isn't going to do full backwards compatability beyond PS4 on the PS5, then honestly I think they should consider re-releasing the PS3, but give it a different name, something like Playstation Legacy or something like that, reincorporate the PS1 and PS2 backwards compatability, and along with keeping the PS3 store open, set it up where you can digitally download games from the PS1,2,3, and PSP onto the device (I imagine PSP games wouldn't be an issue on the devices, though I know Vita games would probably be out of the question) and have the store organized in such a way that easily separates the legacy systems.

Now I know such a device wouldn't exactly sell like hotcakes, so they couldn't be super mass produced and as such prices wouldn't be as low as would be desired, but just keep the option available and I'm sure a fair amount of people would be interested.

And how would they do that? IBM which created the "Cell" decided to discontinue that chip many many years ago dude.

Lol. IBM is now only one step away from becoming a software-only company, only caring for cloud-solutions and well...other software-stuff...Do you even get this?

Also to do this you need a lot of chips. Currently we are living in a chip-crysis...and it just started dude.

Chips are being made lesser and lesser. And they will become tremendously more expensive in the next few months.
IBM won´t be the exception here. It will affect each company, producing chips.

Its currently not easy to pirate anything on the platforms Sony wasn't shutting down though...
Post-shutdown it would be hard. But since Sony announced the shutdown in advance, that would have been plenty of time for people to buy games off the network and start dumping them. After the shutdown, piracy would have been the only means of getting these games. Which I am guessing, Sony might have realized would have been the case.

Closing all 3 down at once was a pretty crazy idea to begin with, not surprised they backed off a bit. I would assume they'll space out each closure at least a couple years now.

Sounds to me like that announcement also influenced digital sale number for PS4 and PS5, so they had to rethink.

I mean if the stores continued to sell they would have not decided to close them down in the first place..... I dont think many people are using the stores anymore

We can never generalize a statement, because there are so many factors involved, and we might have access to a very limited of them.

I love how people have just been shown that their Discs don't mean jack fucking shit.... still somehow think buying games physically makes any difference.
Have fun not being able to play your digital titles when the online eventually does shut down and the CMOS battery dies. On Sony's home consoles physical will always be the way to go.

See this is Sony's problem. They need to either, A: forever keep online services on all consoles. Or B: Give us backwards compatibility.

Wow. We freaked out over nothing. This is just fucking wonderful. I'm thankful to the gaming community and to Sony (for realizing that severing the PS3/Vita stores would be a huge mistake). Still, it's sad that they're still shutting down the PSP store. But hey, you can always "download" games on it, am I right?
I mean, seriously, it's one heck of a way for them to make money.

Long live the legacy consoles!

Huh, odd move on their part. Now I still need to figure out how to get the PS3 version of the PKGj store to work correctly on my PS3.

Physical games do not work either when there is no connection to the server and the battery dies or is replaced, so I dont understand why you bragging about your physical media here...
