Oculus Air Link allows you to stream your VR games to your headset wirelessly

maxresdefault (1).jpg

When it comes to the Oculus Quest 2, you can either play your games while wired in to your PC, or you can experience games in a slightly scaled-down form natively on the headset itself, without any wires. This new update, though, lets you play your PC-powered games, wirelessly. Facebook teased the Oculus Air Link, which works similarly to in-home streaming, as you'll be using your computer to run the game, but it'll be streamed directly to the Quest 2 over WiFi. Right now, Air Link is in an experimental form, and will available soon, through the Oculus application.

We know gamers want to use Link without a wire—to experience the full freedom of movement offered by Quest 2 while playing the high-end titles that can only run on a gaming PC. That’s why we’ve been working on a new streaming technology called Oculus Air Link—a completely wireless way to play PC VR content on Quest 2 using WiFi, built on the successful Oculus Link streaming pipeline.

It's recommended that you have a 5Ghz wireless network, in addition to being within around 20 feet of your router, in order to get the best possible quality. This feature will be added in the v28 update for both the Oculus Quest 2's software and the Oculus PC program, which currently has no set release date beyond "soon". A more solid timeframe will likely be revealed in the Oculus Gaming Showcase next week. That same update will also add 120Hz support for the Quest 2 headset, an increase from the current 90Hz, allowing you to play games at a higher refresh rate, when plugged into your PC through Oculus Link.

Oh that's great news I never really got Virtual Desktop to work wirelessly.. & I had a few nightmare time with the wired way the only thing that made it stable for long plays was the " oculus tray tool" which after struggling to make the wired way work perfectly.. This tool made it stable... Anyways I'm looking forward to this update & the 120hz... & I haven't played with my VR in a while.... I think it's time for a session this weekend Pavlov & Population One.. See you then!

Does this thing still require a facebook account or can it be hacked right out of the box?
Yes for Facebook ( make a dummy account) & the games just install like pc ones it's very easy to make a VR collection I have just over 1TB of games some I still haven't played...

strangely, Instagram does not require a facebook account, but oculus does.

It works, but still think it was an anti-consumer move. It is even against law where I live (not that anyone here is enforcing that law for tech companies anyway).
I just created a developper account on oculus, I don't know if you can use a oculus quest with that kind of account, but theses, you can still make them, only a phone number is asked (the number come from facebook when you get the SMS lol), to verify the account.

Anyone tried that ?

EDIT: LINK https://developer.oculus.com/

Yes as far as I know I think they implemented a check for log in under the disguise of checking for multiple devices having the same game with one user. It basically broke the jailbreak for it

This can be done right now via Virtual Desktop and it is working quite good.

If you haven't been paying attention, and been reading on reddit or discord. The amount of people having issues getting VD working is a real issue, you have to do a lot of troubleshooting, trial and error to get it to work. Something an average person cannot do or have time for, for Oculus to come up with something that is hopefully easy to setup, then VD will become obsolete.

oh, darn, I got the Chromecast that came with the gaming controller. Not suer if that'll work since the controller works over the wifi. Kinda weird really. but I do think bluetooth devices are supposed to link to it, ill dig further into which type I have.
That's likely the Chromecast Ultra + Stadia controller, which unfortunately isn't compatible with Steam In-home streaming I don't think.

1. I'm pretty sure the force you to use your IRL full name for your FB account to properly link to ity, and

Virtual Desktop already does this and it's extremely impressive, no noticeable input delay on 5GHz. I actually regret buying Quest versions of certain games because they look better on Steam and I didn't realize Virtual Desktop was so good. If Air Link can do the same for free then that's great but if it can perform better then that's even better.

I kinda wanted a Quest 2 when I saw it was a fusion of Oculus Pro and the first Quest, but them being linked to Facebook is a huge turn off for me. Maybe I'll look into this Virtual Desktop thing.

Still waiting, have the Vive for the family's living room, but I'd honestly like the Quest 2 just for playing stuff in my room, and I don't even remember if it can be used for SteamVR using the Link.

I'm curious to see how it performs vs Virtual Desktop's solution. VD still has slight hiccups even with the "ideal" network setup, so if Oculus's solution can manage to eliminate those hiccups altogether that would be nice. Otherwise, meh.

120hz though is nice though.

reminder that you can already play PCVR wirelessly from both your quest and quest 2 using Virtual Desktop (the version available in the quest store, NOT the steam one, they are different apps)
It’s paid

Also lil tip-
Use Ethernet on your PC to severely reduce latency

Just make a dummy if you don't wanna make one or link yours to it ?
Not viable. They’re extremely strict about it, and will 99% of the time find out you’re using a fake account. Which they then ban- and you lose the games and money you put into it
