Sony working on the original 'The Last of Us' remake, according to new Bloomberg report

A new report from Bloomberg broke the news that Sony is working on a remake of the PS3's The Last of Us for the PS5. Code-named T1X, the project was initiated by a small team of around 30 people wishing to form a new Sony games development studio. The team first planned to remake the first Uncharted game released back in 2007 but they settled on The Last of Us as it involved relatively less work and resources, and wanted to bundle it with the game's sequel for the PS5. Following this project, the group thought that it would have established itself and work on remaking the first Uncharted and other games later on.

T1X was apparently approved on "a probationary basis" and the team's existence kept a secret by Sony and weren't even allocated more budget to hire additional staff. Nevertheless, the small group worked on the remake and by Spring 2019, they had a completed a section of the game for showcase purposes. However, Hermen Hulst, former Guerrilla Games head and newly-appointed head of PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios, was allegedly unimpressed with the project.

When the team expected to begin production on the remake, they were called to do some polishing work on The Last of Us Part II which was delayed to 2020. This slowed down their progress on the remake as most of the team was assisting Naughty Dog. Following the completion of The Last of Us Part II, Sony apparently assigned "dozens" of people from Naughty Dog to work on T1X, some of whom worked on the original game itself. The remake was now moved under Naughty Dog’s budget.

All these developments made Mumbauer’s team see their short-lived autonomy as being stripped away. Bloomberg reports that by the end of 2020, "most of the T1X team’s top staff had left, including Mumbauer and the game’s director, David Hall". However, T1X remains in development at Naughty Dog.

Similarly, Bend Studio behind Days Gone, was "assigned to work on a new Uncharted game with supervision from Naughty Dog". But fearing that they might get integrated into Naughty Dog, Bend Studio's leadership "asked to be taken off the Uncharted project" and are working on their own new game. Jason Schreier, who wrote the Bloomberg report, says that he doesn't know if the new Uncharted project is still underway as "it was all on paper at Bend".

Bloomberg does not cite its sources in the report, writing that "Mumbauer declined to comment and others asked not to be named discussing private information", so we might want to take these news with a grain of salt. What the report seems to indicate is a refocus from Sony's part towards bigger games and big studios while distancing itself from smaller teams and projects, which was also indicated by the recent reorganization of their Japan Studio.

Forget the game the more important news seems to be that Sony is alienating dev teams left and right while Microsoft is expanding it's ecosystem.
Think it's because people just read the title and post their comment without reading the actual article. Regardless, I just hope all the devs that Sony are alienating or getting rid off will bite Sony's ass in the near future.

Cool, will they finally fix the crash bug that modders recently fixed, or are they saving that for the Deluxe edition?

You guys don't understand at all, do you ? It might not be for you but think about it. Some people don't have PS3 or PS4. It will give new gamers an opportunity to try those remake games out on PS5. That's great news. Not for me too but give a new gamers a chance, huh ? :)

Some people don't have PS3 or PS4, but 99% of people don't have a PS5

At least if they bundle the game, people could be disappointed immediately instead of waiting 7 years for it.

Fuck off, haters. Don't play the remakes/remasters if you don't want to, but let everybody else enjoy it if they fancy to.
I wouldn't be a hater if they actually released new games but all these remakes and remasters are getting out of control. Games shouldn't take 5 + years to make.

Sony is starting to annoy me... patch it for free, stop insulting peoples intelligence. You arent "remastering", you are just creating patches and selling them as if they were a new game. This started with the god of war collection, where they changed nothing at all except resolution.

And they're going to do it again for Bloodborne that the scene proved could be done on last gen for free.

With Bloodborne Sony can bend me over a barrel as long as it's a solid 60 FPS, IDGAF. I'll buy the thousand-dollar 'Super Saiyan Special Edition Featuring Dante From Devil May Cry & Knuckles' if that's an option.

Just looking at the Creative Business side of things, it takes more than throwing money at Creatives to come up with a good, new Game, let alone IP; it makes sense to hedge their bets on trusted IPs and polishing that up for a new Console Generation.

The current Mainstream expectation for Production Value in Games is akin to Cinema, so even creating their Assets require a Creative Team with a substantial budget; trusting all of that investment into an unproven IP is risky unless you're the current Golden Child that can do no wrong, which is probably Square Enix at this point.

Anything less than Hollywood-quality can currently be handled by Indie Developers, so it goes back to what Mainstream expectations are of AAA Developers, whether they would be treated as warmly developing Indie-quality games as Indie Developers would.

Personally, it feels like this is the reason there is an ever-increasing divide in the Gaming Industry, but the Glass-Half-Full view would say it also creates more opportunities for Indies to profit.

Is there a point? Plot was dated by default and gameplay barely existed. There is basically nothing to remake.

Comment is obviously from someone who never played the game. Same goes for the people who "liked" the comment.Gameplay barely existed? Lmao. Whatever.

I also don't believe the story. Zero sources and Bloomberg has a history of talking shit about Sony.

Who honestly cares about TLoU anymore, especially after that completely unneeded and miserable sequel?

Why can't Sony focus on games with more traditional appeal, like asking for a proper Ratchet & Clank quadrilogy remake? A fourth proper Spyro game (since Crash recently got a fourth proper game)? Jak & Daxter trilogy remake?
Something actually (hopefully) fun instead of yet another port of yet another zombie apocalypse game?

but if they take 1 year you get trash like fifa and cod. games that take longer have a higher chance of being better.

Tempted to quote nearly every other comment. You're all acting like this is a factually proven story. It's not. This "Fuck Sony" attitude because of a Bloomberg article is a joke. Especially as I've already stated, they have a history of shit talking Sony with zero basis whatsoever. It's far fetched from the get go. Do you all honestly believe TLOU is being remade for the PS5? C'mon.

because that's nintendo's job now. if you want fun romps go to nintendo. sony has already established that they're no longer the fun, wacky japanese company with a unique lineup of games. they're a bunch of hollywood wannabes now and seeing as how playstation headquarters moved to california that's not going to change any time soon.
also the fact you think sony can make another fun simple game is laughable especially after the giant disc shaped feces that was ratchet and clank 2016
