'Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children' movie 4K HDR remaster releasing this June

Not only games but also movies get remasters these days. Sony Pictures Entertainment announced that the 2005 Final Fantasy VII CGI spinoff movie, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, will be re-released this June 8th as a 4K HDR remaster version. To celebrate the announcement the first 10 minutes of the movie was made available on YouTube (although only at 1080p):

Continuing the storyline based on the hit Playstation® game Final Fantasy VII, two years have passed since the ruins of Midgar stand as a testament to the sacrifices made in order to bring peace. However, the world will soon face a new menace. A mysterious illness is spreading fast. Old enemies are astir. And Cloud, who walked away from the life of a hero to live in solitude, must step forward yet again...

This 4K remaster will apparently include the extra 25 minutes of footage and revised scenes from the 2009 re-release Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete. The 4K remaster is already available to pre-order on Amazon for $30.99.

Actually they did rerender it in 1080p, and it's not an upscale for the original BD.
Anyone with a keen enough eye can tell the difference in clarity and they didn't actually re-render most of the movie to 1080p.

Edit: I'm not trying to say that they took the 480p DVD video files and upscaled to 1080p for the original BD release. They most likely took the original mastered footage (before it was compressed into DVD) and edited, cleaned up the image quality as much as they could after upscaling, and added in the extra scenes in for the original BD release.

There is some softness filter applied to it, and there is also noticeable aliasing throughout the entire film.

the newly added scenes definitely look slightly different than the originals, but they still have roughly the same fidelity and effect

Blu-ray.

horribly compressed youtube

might be rerender, not sure since VLC is being fucky and outputting 4:2:0 PLANAR YUV instead of 4:4:4 today

Kingsglaive was an re-render.

Okay, I am absolutely wrong @LinkmstrYT you are right.
New scenes were a 1080p native render
Old scenes were a mix of 576p-766p footage upscaled
If this is a re-render like Kingsglaive might be worth buying

As I said before, it was the likely that they took the original mastered footage of the 2005 movie and upscaled them to 1080p and tried to clean it up as much as possible, but since it's back in 2008-2009, things like AI upscaling was pretty much non-existent and so they used multiple upscaling techniques to make it look good as possible.

Also, in my opinion, VLC isn't really that amazing of a video player mostly because of how much bloat it has and uses some weird default settings and can screw up video color and such. Personally, I use K-Lite Codec Pack along with various other things like madVR and such, but I'd say the best video player that's really nice AND simple to use is MPV.

I was using VLC as a quick thing so I could grab screencaps. I usually use PowerDVD. Don't kill me.

So, from what I'm getting...this movie isn't good.

That's great news! ...Why would I purchase this, when I honestly couldn't care less about FF7 to begin with? The original never grabbed my attention due to it being so polygonal (by the time I purchased and tried it out, in the latter half of the previous decade) and so cluttered with content - and the subpar translation. As for the remake, why would I buy something A) expensive and B) not the complete package?
So yeah, don't have much context for most FF7 events. Like, I do know that Cloud got some of Zack's memories or something, that Aerith died, that Sephiroth used to be a SOLDIER soldier until he learned of his heritage, fell into the Life Stream and went mad, and some other bits and pieces, but not the whole deal. If this movie was actually good, that probably wouldn't matter as much, but...eeeeh. Nah, non-purchase.

Will we be getting a 4k rerender/remaster of spirits within any time soon?

Anyway might give it a look. Only time I saw the original was a crazily compressed xvid on an old 4:3 screen.
That I would get. I loved that one. It had an undeserving reception because people expected a kids movie.

And it wasn't a real Final Fantasy gamovie.

I wonder how would have been received without the Final Fantasy moniker.

How many tentpole hollywood current releases even manage true 4K for their CGI scenes? Yeah these ancient graphics put on modern workstations would probably render pretty damn fast but it would still be far more effort than the top end of the industry could ever be bothered with. Can't see more than an upscale / HDRening happening.

Squeenix actually rerendered Kingsglaive so Advent Children is not a far off proposition.

This might be unpopular opinion but...as much as i liked FFVII:AC the whole FF universe is all over the place with themes and scenes! Like some fruit salad with mixed fruits and meat and mayonese, ketchup, salt, pepper and pudding...I mean...it looks nice i guess...and has a..depth? but still its just a mess.

That being said, id much rather have a NEW FF movie than 4K remaster thank you very much.
(i have anxiety attack whenever i hear a word "remaster, remake..." lately)

If you go to 1:08 in that first 10 minutes video the artificating on the overgrown midgar(?) makes it super obvious that a lot of it is just AI upscaled, you can also tell by how Red XIII is all smoothed out
Let's wait for the Blu-ray because youtube compression is definitely fucking things up.
