Sony working on the original 'The Last of Us' remake, according to new Bloomberg report

A new report from Bloomberg broke the news that Sony is working on a remake of the PS3's The Last of Us for the PS5. Code-named T1X, the project was initiated by a small team of around 30 people wishing to form a new Sony games development studio. The team first planned to remake the first Uncharted game released back in 2007 but they settled on The Last of Us as it involved relatively less work and resources, and wanted to bundle it with the game's sequel for the PS5. Following this project, the group thought that it would have established itself and work on remaking the first Uncharted and other games later on.

T1X was apparently approved on "a probationary basis" and the team's existence kept a secret by Sony and weren't even allocated more budget to hire additional staff. Nevertheless, the small group worked on the remake and by Spring 2019, they had a completed a section of the game for showcase purposes. However, Hermen Hulst, former Guerrilla Games head and newly-appointed head of PlayStation’s Worldwide Studios, was allegedly unimpressed with the project.

When the team expected to begin production on the remake, they were called to do some polishing work on The Last of Us Part II which was delayed to 2020. This slowed down their progress on the remake as most of the team was assisting Naughty Dog. Following the completion of The Last of Us Part II, Sony apparently assigned "dozens" of people from Naughty Dog to work on T1X, some of whom worked on the original game itself. The remake was now moved under Naughty Dog’s budget.

All these developments made Mumbauer’s team see their short-lived autonomy as being stripped away. Bloomberg reports that by the end of 2020, "most of the T1X team’s top staff had left, including Mumbauer and the game’s director, David Hall". However, T1X remains in development at Naughty Dog.

Similarly, Bend Studio behind Days Gone, was "assigned to work on a new Uncharted game with supervision from Naughty Dog". But fearing that they might get integrated into Naughty Dog, Bend Studio's leadership "asked to be taken off the Uncharted project" and are working on their own new game. Jason Schreier, who wrote the Bloomberg report, says that he doesn't know if the new Uncharted project is still underway as "it was all on paper at Bend".

Bloomberg does not cite its sources in the report, writing that "Mumbauer declined to comment and others asked not to be named discussing private information", so we might want to take these news with a grain of salt. What the report seems to indicate is a refocus from Sony's part towards bigger games and big studios while distancing itself from smaller teams and projects, which was also indicated by the recent reorganization of their Japan Studio.

Yes, nintendo is another company who charges customers for what is essentially a rom loaded on an emulator. I just get more annoyed by Sony since they coined the term "remaster" in relation to video games, and their marketing convinced people a "remaster" isnt just a port. Usually a "remaster" is just the same game with a few config tweaks, might even just be using an emulator. Even if they change a few textures and patch a few things up, its not a "remaster"... if it was every pc version of multi-plat games would be a "remaster".

When I first got my PS4 it was TLOU bundle but I got pissed off I couldn't cross over my PS3 save so I ended up selling the download code on ebay. The average consumer would just buy the PS4 version for $10 and just play it on the PS5 because they should offer an upgrade option like they are doing for FF7 remake.

You guys don't understand at all, do you ? It might not be for you but think about it. Some people don't have PS3 or PS4. It will give new gamers an opportunity to try those remake games out on PS5. That's great news. Not for me too but give a new gamers a chance, huh ? :)
you do know that every ps5 is backwards compatible right? and lost of us remaster exists as a ps4 game you can buy it digitally or physical and run it on your ps5 just fine...

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

@spotanjo3 answered perfectly why it is needed. There are many people who never had a PS3 or PS4 so they never got the chance to play it. Sony like most companies would have checked to see if there was actually any demand for the game on the PS5 before starting development.
It could if playstation cared about retrocompatibility like Xbox did.
what? last of us has a ps4 hd remaster that runs perfectly fine on every ps5 console...

seriously are people forgetting the last of us got an hd remaster on ps4 and that every ps4 game works on ps5 for some reason?

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Not gonna lie, this feels highly unnecessary.

You release the original on PS3, release a remaster on PS4, and now want to make a remake of it on PS5?

For all the shit GTA 5 gets with its re-releases, at least they're only remastering it each time. Imagine if the forthcoming GTA 5 on PS5 were now going to be a remake. That would essentially put it in the same situation, and I know none of you are here for a remake of that game, it's a great game, but the amount of time and effort to make such a remake would so clearly be better spent elsewhere. Exactly how I feel here too.
they did that with shadow of the colossus too lol
released on ps2
remastered on ps3
remake on ps4

TLOU has a HD remastered version on the PS4 and TLOU2 is on the PS4

Both games can be played on the PS5 it would make sense to develop TLOU 3
ps4 games can be played on a ps5, and both tlou games are on the ps4
You can play both TLOU games on PS5.
"Remastered" version is, well, that - a remaster of their old game with some QoL and improvements thrown in. If terminology is correct, then we might be getting an actual full overhaul with this one. Considering that original game is almost a decade old and didn't age all that well, there is some sense to that too.

Forget the game the more important news seems to be that Sony is alienating dev teams left and right while Microsoft is expanding it's ecosystem.

Hope they remake the story. It starts pretty decent then goes off the fucking rails right at the end and makes no sense. Neither Joel or Ellie act remotely close to what they had been written like the entire story. Which of course birthed the Lovecraftian horror of a shitshow TLOU2.

well a remake is a word of making something anew that already exists, you cant remake something that never existed lol.

while i think its unnecessary to remake a game that has an hd remaster on ps4 and can be played just fine on every ps5 console already tough.

If true, nothing is stopping them from making TLOU 3 at the same time (unless they just don't want to), even if you think the remakes are pointless.

The Story was perfectly fine. I just want them to upgrade the graphics. Add a 120hz and a quality option to choose with raytracing.

The original game already looked very good on the ps3 and the ps4. All they would have to do is add more foliage, tessellation, and other stuff to fill up empty parts of scenes. Definitely has no need for a full remake.
