Dolphin Emulator progress report: March 2021 - improves free look camera, other notable fixes

The beloved Nintendo GameCube and Wii emulator Dolphin has published a progress report, detailing work that the team has completed and added to the project within the past two months. Seven major improvements and features were made in this time, alongside numerous bugfixes. Some of the notable new additions include expanding the Free Look option, which allows you to control the camera and move it in directions not normally allowed by the game. You can now change the controls for Free Look so that you can configure button mappings on your controller or other input device, even adding the ability to adjust the camera with gyro controls.

Other changes involve adding GameIDs for homebrew apps, or other .elf or .dol files. This inclusion generates a ID, which in turn lets you edit specific settings for just that title. A new debug option was also added to the Android build of Dolphin, enabling GPU syncing capabilities, and making certain games run more reliably on Dualcore support, balancing performance and accurate emulation. The full progress report can be seen on the official Dolphin emulator website, detailing each of the new changes.

i wonder if they care about improving performance or if they just reached a plateau. cuz i'm sure they're making lots of quality of life and accuracy improvements yet i havent seen them talk about performance in the last 2-3 years.
After 2 decades the original hardware is so outdated that performance improvements become less important

To some extent you can "outrun" bad or unoptimized code

Any modern ish pc should have no problem with most games even way upscaled

what? they have made huge improvements to performance over the last 5 years, theres only so far you can push performance of any system. IPC of cpus hasnts improved that much, you might get 2 or 3 fps every cpu generation but thats about it so what they have managed is good enough.

BOTW has its own new tool
But uh
For the emulator
It’s not as easy as dolphin

Either way
Excited for the new free look-
It adds some potential for future Dolphin VR things (if anyone decides to update it)
I played dolphin VR 5 years ago and it was a lot of fun, is it pretty deprecated?

i know. my 9 year old 3570 can play new switch games like odyssey and bowser's fury at consistent fps let alone wii games. which is why i asked the question. do they not care about improving performance because every modern pc can play wii games comfortably or can they not improve it further. (also it would be awesome to get more games playable on my 100 dollar phone)

They don’t have much to do performance-wise.
They’ve covered most of what they can in the 11 years the emulator has been around.
As for phones- well eventually phones will be so good that the average phone will be able to do switch games. No one needs a phone that strong, but it’s still going to happen

"No one needs a phone that strong"

What if I want to play switch games on my phone?

Both the Nintendo Wii and 3DS Emulators are Applications that I haven't paid any attention to seeing that I have the original Hardware running Homebrew.

That said, everything wears out and even all my Arcade classics are just Software now, so all this development is money in the bank for that eventuality of my existing hardware.

Nintendo Wii is definitely a Console System that deserves to be immortalised via Software and I don't doubt there'll come a day when it'll join my current Emulator favourites with the SONY PlayStation 2 and SEGA Dreamcast.

...
Shhh
But I mean like
Everyone- even the people who just get a phone to text. And they’re never gonna take advantage of the fact that their phone can do what some PC’s can x3

I agree, but with a possible AR/VR revolution I think really powerful phones would be necessary. Not to mention games like fortnite and genshin impact and pubg etc are becoming more popular so strong phones will be needed.

Bro you haven't lived until you played Galaxy at 1080p. Also much easier modding for games like brawl. Not to mention much better controls than the stupid motion controls. Don't get me started on how much better citra is than a 3ds for games like Monster Hunter and kid Icarus.

I have to agree with this sentiment. I played Xenoblade Chronicles upscaled with a user created texture pack and mod to change the prompts to the xbox pad instead of the wii. Graphically and performance wise it was ahead of even the switch remaster never mind the original running on an actual Wii. Even just upscaled to 1080p games just look so much cleaner in Dolphin. It really does show how the Wii hardware didn't do the games justice.
