Hi all,

I was talking to my cousin today about our Switches. We both have Switches with SYSNAND 11.0.1 and EMUNAND 11.0.0.

Basically we use SYSNAND to play online with legit games we own and then EMUNAND with SX OS to do other stuff.

My understanding is that of recent, there are now game updates out there which aren't supported with 11.0.0 and there are also some newer games which don't support 11.0.0 all together. My question is, should I move my SX OS installation to Atmosphere? Because It's my understanding that Atmosphere supports EMUNAND with 11.0.1 firmware (meaning that all updates and games are compatible)... As for SX OS... Well we don't know what's currently happening with them... It's looking less likely we are going to get an EMUNAND 11.0.1 update.

At the moment I'm just looking for advice.

I guess the question is what SX OS features do you use that you would be giving up? And what are you gaining?

I really don't see what you'd be gaining, considering I've never had a game refuse to load on 11.0.0 . In the future, new games will surely require new firmware, but why not just wait until then, in case SX OS gets updated in the meantime?
On the other hand, maybe losing SX OS features isn't a big deal to you and you want the experience of running Atmosphere.

Maybe I was misinformed, but I was under the impression that there are now some newer Switch games released which don't currently run on 11.0.0 and are unpatchable? Maybe I got that wrong.

Really the only features I need are EMUNAND, the ability to install game NSP's (and updates) and also run homebrew. I don't put my EMUNAND anywhere near an internet connection so I don't really need anything fancy in that department.

That may be the case, I just haven't encountered it myself. If you haven't encountered the situation with a game you wanted to play, then I wouldn't worry about the theoretical possibility of it happening. Cross that bridge when you come to it.

If you aren't using XCIs or loading from an external drive, then you probably won't miss SX OS too much (aside from convenience and not having to update sig patches).

Seeing the current state of SX OS, I would move onto Atmosphere before the SX boat sinks. I already did last year and it's been fine for me thus far, the only real downside is having to update sigpatches manually, but I've seen automated homebrew apps that can do that for you (never tried them though).

Well I do it in one go anyway, it's really just a matter of copying the contents of one more zip to your sd while you're updating Atmos

I do the same thing but it's less convenient than the all-in-one update that SX OS provides (provided?)

I'm gonna move when a game I want to play requires an update. Until then, seems a waste of time.
But is it really a waste of time if TX never releases an update? There is quite literally nothing to lose by at the very least setting up Atmosphere. The only waste of time is putting off that setup.

I was going to say the exact same thing, dude. You beat me to it letter by letter. There you have it. I will wait until the games are no longer patchable. But in the meantime, using SX on USB HDD. That´s the dealbreaker for me.

Well , you'll have to remember that you are giving up many features

Use BOTH! They both have their srengths 3000+ SX OS affers. I DGAF if SX updates, it's still worth its weight in external storage.

"Many"? Like what? Its certainly features that you won't lose sleep over. And that doesn't even factor into the features or support that you gain with Atmosphere.

Atmosphere's got nothing on SX. USB loading is that good. Use BOTH. Have hekate autoboot Atmo and use SX only for USB archives. YOU'LL NEED A SEPARATE EMUNAND TO KEEP AT 11.0.

While you are at it you could

I have changed from sx to atmosphere. I know it's not needed yet. However, I have been curious about the flexibility of atmosphere modules for quite a while and I have done the change in a way that I can go back to sx easily if they ever release an update. In addition to that, I didn't want to wait until the last moment. It took me a few days to learn about how to install everything I wanted. Now, even if I miss xci and hdd support, I have to say that I am quite happy about the new features I have got using sys-modules, and I might not completely go back to sx even if they release a new update.

Xci and the sexy boot menu
.XCI files have their own share of advantages and disadvantages similar to .NSP files that its arguably not worth sticking to one format. And as for "sexy boot menu", that is entirely subjective so its not even worth mentioning. However if you want to bring it up as a valid argument, SX OS doesn't even have the best menu. That honor definitely goes to Hekate with the added distinction to customize it unlike SX OS.
