As a platform and the games it had how is 3DS going to be remembered in your opinion?

I love the games and the system as a whole. But feel like it wouldn't be remembered as other handhelds which had new ideas which really were game changers.

Gameboy - handheld which was cheap and had good games.
Gameboy advance - the form factor.
DS - dual screen.

what do you think?

One the real game changers was the one that brought built in back lights.

i think that's somebody who's living in 2021 saying that. at the time backlit meant less time to play games.

other consoles had built in back lights, but how much did they sell?

Atari Lynx was like the first i think. do you or anybody you know who owns a Atari Lynx?

I am not too sure about those older systems. I started in with the gameboy. and kept more so with it as they offered titles that I liked more than the others at that point.

The homebrew machine.

thats a good point.it kinda made homebrew more mainstream

well Atari Lynx 1987. Gameboy is 1989. so its around the same time. but Gameboy won cause it had cheap games and all type of games.

It'll probably be remembered for being as being a product of the 3D trend. As its gimmick slowly became less relevant, with 3D-less models and later games lacking the feature, it became prominent for just having a solid games library, and being a successful Nintendo system at the time, being paired up with the failing Wii U.

So yeah - being part of a trend in the beginning, good games for the rest.

As a great handheld console of course, the 3DS was hugely successful. If a true 3D screen and the augmented reality capabilities are not innovative, I dont know what is.

Unfortunately the 3D was only perfected with the New 3DS, it would have been nice to have stable picture from the beginning, would have made it even more of a success. I think that cost the 3DS a lot of momentum, as no kid can be expected to hold a handheld perfectly stable so the main selling point lost some impact.

Admittedly, once hacked, one of THE best handheld game consoles of ALL TIME. Especially due to how many game libraries it can emulate, as well as the GBA VC injects and DSi Injects running in native mode. Hella impressive.

I'll be honest, I got mine in back in 2013 and it took me about 7 years to decide to mod it with Luma 3DS. I've still enjoyed it quite a lot during those 7 years with all my 3DS legit games and a R4i card and I still do even more nowadays, since I've added CFW.

The real big difference for me since I've modded it is the addition of the emulation through homebrew and the TWL Menu++. But I had my modded PSP as an alternative back in the day and that allowed me to play all the (g)oldies via emulation there, and for the DS games I used the R4i cards on both my DS and 3DS, so it didn't bother me that much. But having all in one is awesome!

I think the GB/GBC and GBA had a bigger impact in my childhood, as there was nothing better back in the day. Now you have too many options for portable devices, mainly the retro ones. The backlit option was a plus, but not a deal breaker imo, as it drained the batteries quicker. And you had the accessories that allowed you to add light to the consoles' screens and play in a dark room. It wasn't amazing, but it worked.

That said, and back to the main question of this thread, I still enjoy my 3DS and I'll be happy to share it with my (future) kids when the time comes! That's how I want to remember it. :D

I have BitBoys and other portable consoles but in my opinion the 3DS is still the superior way to play anything from GB to SNES. A lot of people in my circle of friends seem to either underestimate or are just unaware of the great games on the 3DS. I would guess that the majority of kids who grew up with the regular DS and GBA like myself probably just ignore it because we all have enough money to afford gaming PCs and next-gen consoles now. If not for anything else, the 3DS will be remembered as the last dual-screen handheld from Nintendo. It's got some novelty at the very least.

Another weak console with wasted resources between a 3D mode nobody wanted and a barely useful firmware. But, unlike NDS, with waaaaaaaaaaay less catalog. Saved by the amazingly stupid Playstation Vita management by Sony. It has many great games but, let's be honest, it's not NDS.
