The PlayStation Store will no longer be offering movie and TV purchases/rentals

It seems the subscription service model is edging PlayStation out of the TV and movie online rental market. After August 31, 2021, you will no longer be able to purchase TV seasons or movies, nor will you be able to rent movies on the PlayStation Store. This change is due to Sony seeing "tremendous growth" when it comes to both ad-based and subscription-based streaming services. If you've purchased any media through the PlayStation Store in the past, you'll still be able to watch it on your PlayStation 4 or 5 and still access it after the cutoff date.

Sony buying Crunchyroll/Funimation/Wakanim streaming service, now stopping rent/buy service from PSN. I see a pattern.
Maybe they plan to merge everything into a single, worldwide, app or platform?

Or they just don't want to manage that service directly, and will deal with time limited licenses on existing services instead, netfflix/prime/disney/Apple/etc.

Except you can still use it as a movie machine. They didn't say you can't still play movies on it that you already own or from all of the other video services available on the PS3/PS4/PS5. Just their own store will not be offering them. No partial refund for you. :P
If I'm not getting all the services that came with the machine I purchased, then I deserve a partial refund. Remember the PS3/OtherOS fiasco that turned into a class-action lawsuit? This has that same energy.

I honestly had no idea the Playstation Store offered these things to begin with, not that I would've bought movies and TV shows from there regardless. IIRC Steam tried to do something similar a while back, and the results were similarly laughable. For the few people that still rent DVDs instead of subscribing to streaming services, it's hard to beat Redbox's pricing.

They mean actual movies, or just crappy games with no gameplay like lazy of us and ughcharted?
I agree with your sarcasm, I just can't be this aggressive :P

I would say with my words that Sony exclusives put an obscene amount of resources on cut-scenes, that make the gaming experience get close to movie experience, witch put in their hands lots of talented people that can make proper movies for an eventual sony owned netflix like service. People up there on replies already remembered us that crunchyroll was acquired by sony, and even that Sony Pictures has nothing to do with the Playstation brand, they still are in the same umbrella in the big picture, so yeah, makes sense shut down rental/sales to offer subscription based services later.

Sony is launching a streaming service on there high end Bravia TVs so this is probably why. Eventually this service will trickle down to other platforms. All major movie studios will probably have a streaming service by end of next year.

Why? What benefits does it have, over something like a raspberry pi and osmc? or, https://osmc.tv/vero/ this if you want 4k.

My pro is the only 4k device I have, but the media player that comes with it isn't that great I've read, the only network support it has is dlna. I've used the plex app before but then I have to use plex...
What’s wrong with plex? I have a Usenet box I have setup with OVH that automatically fetches my weekly shows and allows me to stream to all my devices wherever I am easily
