Good Morning.:)

I am very, very sorry,my "Knowledge" for Wii HDDs ends with 2 TB Western Digital (WD)....I have never used a bigger HDD or other HDD Brands for the Wii...:(

@Cyan answered somewhere a Thread with this Explanation:

Further he suggests to use WD HDDs,they should support it.

....and if I remember correct,he maybe suggested to make 2 Partitions (no Problem for USBLoader GX).
(If not and I am totally wrong, forgive my Friend.^_^).

You can use a Tool like AOMEI´s Partition Assistent to initialize the HDD as MBR
and make a 2 TB Partition for FAT32 (for Homebrew and GameCube Games)
and the Rest for NTFS (for the Wii Games only).

I hope this helps a little.

Good Luck
Thank you.:)
When you say You can use a Tool like AOMEI´s Partition Assistent to initialize the HDD as MBR

and the Rest for NTFS (for the Wii Games only). I honestly have no clue what you are talking about?
Are you saying I could use 2 different hard drives for my Wii?

No, he's talking about using one drive but creating two partitions on it, one FAT32 & one NTFS. This setup can also get complicated if not done correctly. I think the first partition has to be FAT32 with the second one NTFS.

Also, I don't think this setup works with all the loaders, possibly only GX. You'd have to seek out information on using a drive this way in the forums of the programs you plan to use such as USB LOADER GX and NINTENDONT.

I prefer to have it all on one partition so I haven't ever tried this myself.

Dual partitions should be supported by all loaders. So long as the first partition is fat32 your apps should load fine, and reading wii games from either format works fine, ripping is unstable to ntfs however and isn't recommended due to the risk of it corrupting other data on the drive. That being said, I know GX has had some updates to its ntfs libraries that may have made it more stable, hasn't been specifically tested/reported to say for certain though

I think,I explained it not clearly enough,my Fault.
FAT32 should be the first Partition, otherwise - no GameCube "Support" with the USBLoader GX.
Many Applications works with NTFS but not all (sysCheck Tool can not save for Example),so better use FAT32 for them.

That being said, I know GX has had some updates to its ntfs libraries that may have made it more stable, hasn't been specifically tested/reported to say for certain though

Yes and no,it seemingly depends on the HDD Brand/USB Device (I deliberately left out USB Sticks & Friends..).

Most Western Digital HDDs makes really not so much "Troubles" as other Brands....
What is unfortunately fell into Oblivion:
These Homebrew/cIOS/Loaders where delevoped when IDE HDD´s where mostly used for the Wii.

Now it is the Time from SATA or SSD Drives....

BUT it maybe also depends on the cIOS Version (d2x v8 or v10) AND which Loader IOS you use with the USBLoader.

From personal Experiences,NTFS it is very,very vary.
I have very good Times with an external 3.5 1 TB WD with NTFS,but not with an 2.5 WD 2 TB Portable....

Thank you.:)

So basically I just can't buy a external hard drive and then format it into FAT32 and by doing that that load my GameCub, Wii, GameBoy, and other games for my Wii!
I just seems really complicated to be honest so with all the information that has delivered to me I am going to just buy a external hard drive and use software to FAT32 format it and then load my games to it and plug it in to the Wii and play away! Because to me just rolling with it has sometimes worked for me. Lol

From what I gather, it only gets complicated when your are dealing with hard drives greater than 2 or 3tb, otherwise it's pretty straight forward. If u use modmii's usb-loader setup wizard it will give u the tools and directions to configure a few different setups (fat32, ntfs, or fat32/ntfs hybrid)

Edit: and it's pretty uncommon for hdd's that size to be used for the wii, but maybe that will change in the future (and require me to push another modmii update to direct users to convert to MBR).

Anyone know if the current drives that are 2TB & less are still MBR or are they all now also GPT?

The two I bought last month were WD MyBook 18TB's to expand my movie and TV library, so I haven't bought an under 2TB in over 5 or more years. Wondering if even the 2TB< smaller drives these days need converting? But even so, EaseUS Partition Master or the system device manager should handle converting those from GPT to MBR without any problems.

@RAWRimaMONSTER - To keep it simple you might just want to stick to a 2TB drive in MBR FAT32 @ 32K. You will not have the expandability you'd wanted for the future, but you could get a good chunk of Wii & GameCube titles onto the drive. Personally I have some 1,600+ Wii titles and 800+ GameCube titles, but only play 6 of them infrequently, so I could just have them on my SDXC 256GB card. Now that I think about it I do, for when I do not have a drive attached. My 5TB method is just the collector in me saying I have to have it ALL and it needs to be in One place. No matter what you do, do not buy a raw drive, it needs to be in an external USB case so it can connect to the USB port on the Wii. Either USB 2.0 or 3.0 works fine, but go with 3.0 for faster transfers from your computer to the drive.

Pictures taken last night:
1) One of my test Wii's with the WD 5TB P-10 Game Drive
2) My main computer desk with active MyBooks & Passports (about 224TB worth)
3) My decommissioned smaller 500GB, 1TB, 2TB & 4TB drives collecting dust (about 34TB worth)

I actually use raw/bare drives all the time, I just use a usb to sata adapter, or the attachment that came with my Seagate goflex drive. I don't know if they still make those, but those were/are sweet. I got 4 of them back in the day 2x1tb with usb2.0 adapters, and 2x1.5tb drives with usb3.0 adapters, and an extra esata adapter. I find the usb 2.0 adapter works better for the wii, so when I'm using it on my wii I use that, but then to access the same drive on my PC I can just pop in my usb3.0 adapter. And the adapters can just attach to any 2.5 bare drive so it makes my normal sata to usb adapter kit redundant.

Tldr, everyone should have one of these drives, buying one is like also getting a sata to usb adapter that works on bare drives

Edit:
https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-Ultra-Portable-External-STAA1000101/dp/B0045JLPMO

Amazon doesn't have a good pic of the adapter, but here's a pic

Edit2: one of the 4 drives died, not bad considering its probably been close to a decade since I bought them. And even that one that broke I opened up the casing a replaced it and the original enclosure and adapter still work great! Way more valuable than the small HDD I tossed inside it to replace the one that died

Point taken, sorry, yes I can see where these would work.

I have the following docking station myself and if I were using raw drives that might work. But my installations are usually meant to sit on an entertainment center or in an area where kids frequent, so I never really considered leavening a raw drive with an adapter permanently out in the open.

Docking Station Link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0759567JT/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

In the private conversation I was having with him I got the impression that he thought a raw drive wound attach inside of the Wii. So my comment was to make sure he bought a drive in an external enclosure. With all the complicated issues he is finding with this process I didn't want him to add another layer of frustration by purchasing a raw drive just to find it wasn't exactly what he needed. I can see a few of us doing it this way, but not most users, so I didn't think that was his intention.

What's the best way to play those Wii games that don't come in disks on a hacked Wii? Do I load them from a SD card or a usb stick or something?

yes you are totally correct, your advice was right on the money, it just got me thinking and my comments were definitely not geared to the average user but more geared to a tech-head like yourself :)

What did you just call me?? LOL...

As always my friend, looking forward to the latest upcoming ModMii release!

use an emulated nand with UNEEK+di (neek2o version) and a usbloader loader like GX with emunand support

ModMii can help you with a lot of this, but make sure you get the latest version of GX, the official modmii release is still using an older version (that I think still has emunand support anyway)

Last year I picked up a used wii with the intent to trim it up. I installed portablizemii on it, but I never got past the software phase. Since it was just disassembled and collecting dust I put it back together to use it like a normal wii again.

However, I'm now unsure how to remove all the custom menus and wifi disable hacks etc. Would using modmii to just overwrite the custom isos that came with the installer do the trick? Or do I need to do anything else to get it back to normal. With my limited understanding, it's basically booting into postloader with a custom theme and has some patches to disable wifi. My end goal is to remove the custom menu and update to the latest cisos, priloader and hacks so I can play wii, gc and vc games from usb.

I do have a nand backup from before I installed portablizemii, but it's not on boot2. I could restore, but would prefer to just uninstall things manually, so I don't risk bricking it in case anything unexpected happens mid restore. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure what gets installed for portablizemii. Generally speaking modmii will overwrite IOSs (unless u disable it or say no when prompted). If a custom system menu was installed then u would need to tell modmii u want to change system menu versions in order for it to direct you to install one to overwrite portablizemii's.

Edit: and when u reinstall priiloader u would need to adjust its boot settings if u don't want it launching post loader. Although I think when u reinstall it, your settings will return to default, but I'm not 100% certain

I have borrowed a Windows laptop to get my Wii modded using the Modmii for windows to get all the files i need for my SD Card and everything was working fine.I normally use a Mac, so having access to a Windows machine made the process much easier.

But...
Yesterday i downloaded CTGP-R and extracted to my SD card, and that was working fine playing modded Mario Kart off the original disc.
Now, when i open the Homebrew channel and load "usbloader_gx", where i would see a list of my game backups, the wii goes back to the main menu with an channel shown for usbloader_gx. When i load this nothing happens...

So i think I messed up when copying CTGP-R to the SD Card.

What is the easiest option to redownlaod the files I need without having access to a windows machine or Modmii for windows?

Modmii's temp folder would have saved zips for all the files it downloaded previously, which u should be able to access on another OS as long as u have access to the drive where modmii was saved to when u ran it

Otherwise use wii.guide, it will have links for everything u need

If u can, maybe post a Syscheck, I'm not familar with what is involved with the cgtp-r setup, presumably it installs things to the console and doesn't just update apps on sd

Having made a backup of the "Move to SD" Folder. Then you just copy and paste the contents from a device that can read sd cards and use the option to install everything on the hacked Wii.

Or you can wait until the next ModWii ypdate is ready and do a do over in a PC with Windows.

I'm having some issues with installing a .wad file in both Some YAWMM Mod (I'll call this SWM for short in this post) and MMM on vWii. Stop me if I should put this in the Wii U section instead.

Every time I try to install a specific WAD, I get a return of "error -1022" after it registers tickets. I tried redownloading the WAD, then downloading it again from a different source, both to no avail. Every other WAD I tried installing through SWM worked flawlessly (save for me having to retry some due to space limitations), and while I admit that I haven't touched MMM before this issue, I've had no luck. All I tried doing in both of these apps was installing the WAD; I didn't change any files or settings, since I know a fair bit of the things that work on a normal Wii won't fly on vWii. I originally downloaded SWM through the Homebrew Browser in the Homebrew Channel, then re-installed it from its GitHub listing after it failed with the redownloaded WADs. What do I do now?
