We ought to ban everything but our birthday suits, it's ruining Homo Sapiens as a whole!
I don't know. USN so song?

Hey, I know what'll solve this. How about a central body that gives out ratings for games, based on content? It'll be great, you just submit the game and it gets rated, then when it releases publicly, there can be selling restrictions for age and folks will be able to make an informed buying decision about the product! It's amazing, I'm sure no one has ever thought of this.
Under most US ideas of lawmaking that is dubious (interference with free trade, interference with free speech). Instead politicos rattle a sabre and then the industry in question "voluntarily" introduces a code, and they go back to the voters (usually scared old people) saying we did it whilst not being able to have interference with business come back the other way.

Mind you clicking around on the links from the opening post then I noticed the ESRB is given some kind of force of law

So as stated, a rise in car jacking is attributed to GTA?? Is their evidence from the year 1997?? How long ago was GTA V released???? As for voilence... Where were all the video games during world war 2? World war 1? Any bloody war in history??

If that is seriously their argument, I want to see evidence of kids trying to wear their cats after playing Mario 3d world or to a more modern set up...... Where are all the kids that live on spaceships and murdering each other while performing maintenance jobs??

It's ridiculous but yet another example of this modern snowflake society that is being forced upon us by jumoed up, out of touch politicians.

While I am not inclined to underestimate the snowflake, religious pearl clutching set and variations and combinations of those I would note at this point that games are seen as something of a threat to other entertainment industries (attention economy and all that)
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2019-01-18-netflix-sees-fortnite-as-one-of-its-greatest-threats
Will have to scan through https://www.illinoissunshine.org/se...s&table_name=receipts&table_name=expenditures and not much is immediately jumping out but it is the sort of thing you want to do in these scenarios.

Note also that only games are targetted with this. Could play the entire https://www.imdb.com/search/keyword/?keywords=carjacking back to back (some might need to be reordered to be behind watershed) on TV if they wanted to if this law came in. Maybe games are just that realistic and as you are actually doing it.

Nothing modern about this, the notion that "new=bad" and "different=evil" is age-old, and "why won't someone please think of the children" has been a rallying cry of pearl-clutchers since the first time someone thought to string a bunch of pearls for someone else to clutch.
Video games have been considered literal Satan since the 80s and were the on-call scapegoat for any negative trend in society ever since.

"That is what is happening to our young people. They play truant, miss meals, and give up other normal activity to play [video games]. They become crazed, with eyes glazed, oblivious to everything around them, as they play the machines."

This is from 1981.

and this, ladies and gentlemen, is why, once again, I propose that all members of a body of government must legitimately research something from a neutral perspective before they can even think about passing laws regarding it
because otherwise you have people in power spouting this kind of nonsense

I mean
not really
it was pretty clear to me that the joke was that we already have one of those in nearly every major nation or group thereof... and that bitchy, neglectful parents still get mad upon finding out that a game that was labeled with an indicator of a certain kind of mature content DOES, IN FACT, CONTAIN THAT KIND OF MATURE CONTENT
it's just that historically FAST6191 hasn't exactly been very good at noticing subtler things

You missed comic books, films, jazz, rock and roll,

I am not sure about that one.
Most times I go looking (ancient Islam, ancient Rome, ancient Greece, even more classical civilisations, various parts of medieval Europe, China, Gutenberg press era in Europe, India...) it is usually more can't let the peasants have literacy/understand sacred text's language lest they realise we are making it up as we go along and come for us.
It is still a ban for dubious reasons.

They ban it for power, since knowledge is power. They don't want peasants access to knowledge.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

It's not just the babyboomers.
It's every person that blames something they don't understand for problems.

We ought to ban everything but our birthday suits, it's ruining Homo Sapiens as a whole!
I agree, we should run naked like our ancestors before us. They knew how to live and how to live right.

Well with just one representative backing it, this is obviously going nowhere. Somebody needs to introduce him to a few of the research papers which showed no link whatsoever between violent video games and increased aggression IRL. If that's still not enough to convince him, he might as well switch parties and start blaming 5G for COVID like all the other conspiracy loons.

It's almost like what they've done with the Vaping industry now, I can't buy Vape juices or Vape products online because of kids buying it online in the past. But you can buy cartons of cigarettes online in state still no problem. Makes no since. Blaming something because they have to point a finger somewhere. It will never end. Next we will told that they are banning Fast foods because that's why Americans are fat, not because they're parents didn't teach them right. I have owned almost every GTA game, yet never once have I had the urge to actually go steal a car....just stupid logic!

Sarcasm and internet is a hard one, think my detector might be on the blink.

That said the US is somewhat unique in this -- Europe and the rest of the English speaking world and developed/first world would generally not bat an eye at the idea of a national/provincial/regional government funded and/or sanctioned censorship board and it having force of law. The massive variability in what counts in each of them despite most such places sharing a genetic and cultural history also gets to be the subject of endless debate (the US tending to be viewed as afraid of sex but loving violence, Europe as a whole OK with sex but less OK with violence and plenty of little quirks like Germany https://gbatemp.net/threads/gal-gun-2-denied-classification-in-germany.496384/ , and Japan being OK with sex and violence but shocked silly by swearing, Australia then being the "censorship? hold my beer and I will show you censorship" country).

Does the president have any real power in this?
Equally this sort of thing was supposed to be done after that 2010 case against California.
Going further what ages are the people whining, bitching, pissing and moaning that a computer game character might actually have some sexual allure or demonstrate some kind of "toxic masculinity" (whatever that might be this week)? I figure there will always be busybodies that want to ruin fun.

I should also say that the guy doing this likely has a few years left in him (can't find an age or something for a rough guess), and the businessman that is also cited in a lot of these articles seems to be lacking grey hairs ( http://voyagechicago.com/interview/meet-early-walker-area-ww-towing-inc-south-suburbs/ ).
