HP announced today that it will acquire gaming peripheral brand HyperX from Kingston for $425 million. You might be familiar with HyperX as we have reviewed several of their accessories at GBAtemp.

However, the announcement clarifies that while the acquisition involves HyperX’s gaming peripherals portfolio, Kingston will retain "the DRAM, flash, and SSD products for gamers and enthusiasts". The deal is set to close in calendar Q2 2021.

I have a bunch of HP branded peripherals already (have not checked to see if it is outsourced or in house, though given their printers, screens and whatever else I would be surprised if they did not have in company injection moulding, optics, switches and whatever else).

Maybe it is just a fancy brand name and some designs.

HP is likely associated with "family computer" and printers... hard to sell a HP gaming mouse. Even typing it sounds stupid. So I guess they are buying an established player in the market to get a foothold into that market without having to spin off an entirely new brand.

Yeah most likely.
I don't think it sounds stupid but I usually think in terms of manufacturing facilities rather than brands (so many brands outsourcing things and effectively being shippers with a graphics department, or being sub versions of others) so might not be the target market.

Would still have thought they could have spun up HP gaming as a thing (they already have gaming designated computers and laptops) and cost them less than half a billion in either costs or theoretical lost/missed revenue while they get it established in the minds of gaming types.

Assuming I need to do gaming stuff (and it is one of the easier ways to get sensitivity changing 5 button or more affairs) I quite like a lot of the Taiwanese stuff and things based on stuff from there. Gets really cheap (as in less than "supermarket knows you need a keyboard now so will pay their prices") if you want to go there as well.

As far as worst PC manufacturer. Everybody releases some stinkers it seems but more generally I go by lines within things -- buy consumer junk from anything and it will be junk, HP's business laptops, rugged things, workstations and whatever else I would be delighted to use as my daily and probably pick them for serviceability as well over several others (mainly Dell because they can keep their custom stupidity).
That said whoever decided that you need to remove 20+ screws and disassemble half the case to replace a hard drive or plastic weld in a keyboard on HP's budget laptop lines would do well to not let their name be known if I am around, same for the one that OKed a design that sees me have to tear apart a whole laser printer to clean the sensors when they inevitably get covered in toner (everybody else is remove front cover like you are changing toner/clearing a jam and wipe it).

There are two considerations I would have there

1) It is a shame that owning anything would have troubled you, though were are now many years since mouse makers shoved some silly DRM into things so eh.

2) If they were a big player on the market or a foil for the excesses of other companies then them being an in house brand (and presumably useless) might not be ideal.

I have one HP 1TB M.2 NVME and it is bad ass. It goes something like 3.6GB/sec transfer speed. Crazy. I use it for my boot drive. HyperX branding would make sense on these.
