Hardware Will you buy the PS5 right away or wait for a slim model?

When PS4 slim came out I swiched my fat for practically free. There is still no price diff now really many years later. So it's a non issue.
PS5 is just as good value as PS4. You never lose.

Nah I actually like the way the PS5 is designed: one bigass fan that's easy to replace if needed. And the bigger the case, the better for airflow. If/when there is a "slim" model, it's probably going to have a bunch of smaller fans on it, or otherwise have issues with heat dissipation.

I even like the color scheme of PS5, though I know I'm in the minority. The only thing I don't really care for is how curvy the system is.

imo, the ps5 itself is too large (definitely too large for my setup), so I don't know really.

I won't wait for a slim as it will probably be 3 years until that happens. What I will wait for are some smaller internal revisions to be made. Probably Christmas time 2021 is when I'll get one. I do have one now, but it's unopened and for sale.

It is possible there won't be any slim versions as they might simply upgrade to a newer AMD CPU/GPU without changing anything else. I think it does make sense to increase the size of the SSD though.

Xbox has hinted at hardware upgrades every couple years so Sony would fall behind if they just reduced the size or made a marginally faster Pro version.

I have PS4 and I cannot care about PS4 Pro. It is going to be the same for PS5 Pro or PS5 Slim either way. I want to get the first generation.

Edit: I didnt get it in January. Still delay.

I will buy one in 2023. The prices will be cheaper and also the games the PS5 average life cycle is 6 years so buying it at a lower price at half of the life cycle seems like a good move. Besides I still have a shit ton of PS2-PS4 games to keep me busy for 3 years when I do get the PS5 I can actually exclusively play the PS5 games without having an extensive backlog.

Same thing applies for the Series-X I plan on buying them both at $300 a piece in 2023. My PS4/Xbox One S still have a library of games to keep me occupied for the next 3 years.

I'm sad. I didn't go to my local NEX yesterday, but I went today. There was a stack of Xbox Series X (and a couple of the series S as well). Had it in my hand. Looked at the games on the shelf. As usual, I saw no games that interest me for it (especially for a $499 console). Was almost tempted to get it anyway when someone clued me in that you could pay $20 to activate developer mode, and install retroarch. But... I can already do that on my PC, laptop, Switch, 3ds (obviously with some limitations),... just didn't seem worth it.

But that's not what made me sad. What made me sad was hearing a guy pick on another guy for "being a day late". Apparently, there was a stack of 40 PS5s in the store... YESTERDAY.

Side note: I've never owned any model of Xbox. I've never had a compelling reason to want one. Being in Japan, there isn't really a market for scalping them either. The PS5 however... holy crap, some sold for like $5,000 in various online places (Japanese Amazon, ebay, etc)

Don't expect games until 2022. The entry level games will be at 2021 but but over the years will be the better games implementing the next gen graphics more. 2020-2021 the DEV's are just playing with the newer hardware so 2022 and above is when we really going to see the games capabilities. It's like for the PS3 when it first came out the graphics wasn't the same way as they were when the PS3 was at it's middle to last stages in the life cycle. Half the games you see this year for $70 will drop to $20 next year for black Friday. I won't buy the console anytime soon but if the games are on sale I will be buying the games.

As for the DEV mode for the Series-X I'm just like you I don't see the point of even putting that on. I don't even have DEV mode on my Xbox One S because I already have a ton of retro systems that are already modded if I "Really" want to play SNES/Genesis and other retro emulators. Even my Galaxy S10 can do that job.

I will buy one in few months, just need to wait to resolve high ram temperature(93 celsius in winter time), then when Pro appear will give to my nephew.
I think that next revision will have 2tb ssd, or 1,5tb... it's to low 600gb, only 5 big game. Nobody will be buying a lot of games in this conditions.
I know people that bought ps3 12gb and have onky 3-4 games for years....
