Microsoft backtracks on Xbox Live Gold pricing increase following outcry

xbox.jpg

Yesterday, Microsoft announced an increase in its Xbox Live Gold subscription services with 1-month memberships increasing by $1 to $10.99 a month, while 3-month and 6-month subscriptions saw a $5 and $20 increase, respectively. However, this was not received well by the community and today, the company decided to reverse its decision, stating that they "messed up". Microsoft updated its announcement, stating that there is no changes to Xbox Live Gold pricing.

This means that Xbox Live Gold subscription is back to $9.99 for 1-month, $24.99 for 3-months, $39.99 for 6-months and $59.99 for retail 12-months. The company also mentions that free-to-play games, "will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox" and that they "are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months".

You can read Microsoft's statement below as excerpted from a blog post update:

We messed up today and you were right to let us know. Connecting and playing with friends is a vital part of gaming and we failed to meet the expectations of players who count on it every day. As a result, we have decided not to change Xbox Live Gold pricing.

We’re turning this moment into an opportunity to bring Xbox Live more in line with how we see the player at the center of their experience. For free-to-play games, you will no longer need an Xbox Live Gold membership to play those games on Xbox. We are working hard to deliver this change as soon as possible in the coming months.

If you are an Xbox Live Gold member already, you stay at your current price for renewal. New and existing members can continue to enjoy Xbox Live Gold for the same prices they pay today. In the US, $9.99 for 1-month, $24.99 for 3-months, $39.99 for 6-months and $59.99 for retail 12-months.

Thank you.

Microsoft whole online model was and is a damn cancer on gaming. Having to pay in order to play online was never a thing till xbox/Microsoft started doing it and ignorant kids (yeah kids because only 13 y/o dip shits didn't have a real system (aka ps3) back in the day) paid for it from mommy and daddy's pocket. After they got away with it everyone else started following suit and now nintendo (with there below subpar online shit) is getting away with it for the same damn reason.
Yo but didn't this actually start in the era of the original xbox and halo 2?

The OG xbox was really ahead of its time as far as online multiplayer goes

It did and I disagree, it was a bad deal even back then.

Pay Microsoft for p2p online gaming. Meanwhile over on pc you could enjoy stuff like battlefield 1942, 64 players on dedicated servers for no extra cost.

For sure, but as far as consoles were concerned it was totally in its own league

Oh I played on a pc at that time too used ps3 for exclusives.

No I ment ps3 it was far superior

In 2006 I was a 25 yo man and yes sony was the better console. Xbox only won that gen because all the 13 yo bitchs that couldn't get a ps3 due to mommy and daddy wouldn't spend that much.

Here is a list of all 360 and ps3 exclusives.

Direct comparison of the 2 systems xbox had a slight advantage on the graphics card side but ps3s HD won hands down and the cpu was no contest

Post if u can prove otherwise

Lol dude I'm on a gaming forum and I'm over 40 how mature can I be :rofl2:;) now back to playing sackboy

I never had problems playing online with ps3 and it was FREE.

Yeah that was a little much lmao

ALL of this screams SONY FANBOY..

I will give you one thing tho... i wasn't talking about numbers of systems sold. But if that's the case then the 360 didn't win that gen, neither did the PS3.... The fucking Wii did by absolute miles!!

That's what they get for being greedy. They can't afford any more bad PR, as it feels the Xbox brand is barely staying afloat.
Wait, is it? I thought that was happening for Sony. And Nintendo. And Ubisoft. And EA. And Activision. And Blizzard.

at this point xbox is just playing a joke on us. It's not hard to make a good video game, its not hard to provide a good service, its not hard to have basic competency in the gaming market. Microsoft is simply just acting like a bunch of idiots

Microsoft is so consumer friendly it's honestly suspicious at this point.
it's only suspicious because the other companies are so incredibly toxic and anti consumer, that when someone actually does something pro consumer everyone thinks they're up to some sort of scheme

As an owner of an rgh X360 and jailbroken PS3 still i will say this.... Only one of these consoles is still attached to my living room tv, the other is in the loft. Yes the X360 is still up and running and still gets used.

I completely agree with that. Same with me. But I've stuck with Sony since the ps4 now Ps5. I'm sure the Xbox series x is a good console but I have a crazy I7 setup with a 2080ti so I don't really need an Xbox. I also prefer the playstation exclusives over Xbox exclusives.
But we are all gamers here and that's what matters.

Lol, what an obvious marketing scheme.
Yeah I've got to agree with this one! Been a bit quiet on the MS front recently - bad press is still press isn't it.
Interesting decision regarding free to play access: on the one hand it makes the online part of Halo Infinite free for everyone (when it arrives sometime in 2023 judging by how finished it last looked), but on the other hand, if they'd made this decision years ago to combat the PS4, would they have lost that 'console war' by as big a margin as they did?
