TheFlow announces WIP 'Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas' port for the PS Vita

Sony might have forgotten that it has a gaming handheld called the PS Vita but the homebrew scene hasn't. One of the latest works from the scene comes from TheFlow, who also recently disclosed an exploit on the PS4's firmware 7.55. Via a recent tweet, the modder announced that he managed to port the Android’s version of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas to the PS Vita by writing a .so (Shared Object) loader and replacing shaders.

TheFlow mentioned that this port wasn't as difficult as it might sound and got the game to run "at a good framerate", although it is still a work-in-progress with "lots to optimize".

Modder Rinnegatamante, who is helping TheFlow with renderer code, released a video of a recent build of the GTA: San Andreas port on the Vita and mentions that the current issues are mostly related to graphics quality and framerate:

Additionally, in the video description, Rinnegatamante clarifies that the whole port was done by TheFlow and that his work "basically makes possible to literally run the official Android apk on PSVita".

The Vita is an under-utilized powerhouse that should have had more games than it did.

Had it launched with at least one included game and with enough storage for save files, it would be a completely different story.

100 bucks memory cards, that to make things worse were worse than average sd cards, has to one one of Sony worst ideas ever.

Just buy an SD2Vita :P
Official memory cards are pretty much a scam. You pay around 100 bucks of 64GB maximum and those cards can even get corrupted and aren't as reliable as today's microsd. Just get a 4 to 8GB card as a backup and buy an SD2Vita.

Got a 4 GB card; came with my used Vita when I got it.

Just pointed out why the Vita ended being abandoned by Sony.

I think he's alluding to the fact that this is one of the reasons the Vita failed. SD2Vita obviously didn't exist when Vita launched. If it had...well, Sony would have just released updates to kill it.

By the way, let's hope that the executives and developers responsible for creating the Vita are no longer working in the gaming industry...because they were horrible.

No the Vita itself is a pretty good piece of hardware software. But the guy who made those proprietary cards should indeed be away of the industry (i hope :/ )

chronologically-speaking, the PS Vita is still Sony's current-gen handheld, no?
Sadly yes, and their last one. Sony has no more interest in handhelds at the moment, but that may change given the success of the switch.

In my opinion, Sony just needs to make another PSP that has LTE or 5G, AC or AX Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, a Snapdragon SoC with Vulkan support, 256GB of eMMC storage, an SD slot (or more proprietary Vita bullshit) for storage expansion, and about 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM. But hardware aside, they should make an SDK that makes it easy for the devs of AAA games to easily port those games to the system with minimal effort. This will have third party devs onboard.

Im hoping for new handheld on the market from big company because Nintendo need competition. I love my Switch but Nintendo gets lazy (no Virtual console, shitty online service, Mario 3d all stars efford) because there is no other real console on handheld market (ok there are consoles like GPD etc but its not from Sony or Microsoft). I still cant belive why they do so much hurt for Vita, PSP was great success and Vita sure had enough potential to be even better.

This is so amazing, I love to see the support that people are giving to Vita, I hope someone can port it to the Wii U too. I just have a doubt, why did they choose the Android version and not the original PC version?

I always thought that the PC version was weaker due to its inferior textures.
I'd wished they did port the PC version instead too but i'm assuming it was harder to do over the android shine/chromedome edition of the game.

And as for the PC version, it's just typical Rockstar usually not giving a rat's ass about PC owners of the time
