Thanks @Robz8 - gave that a try. It now shows as #### in the menu but still just freezes on load. Maybe the DS has some info cached somewhere preventing this from loading right?

Loading through TWL++ or HBMENU and it loads up fine. It is a bit larger (1MB vs half that) but I don't see why that would matter as it still fits fine in the DS memory.

Perplexing...
In the arm9 Makefile, try changing the .spec file to the other one used in the other emulators, then run "make clean" and then "make".

That worked, @Robz8 ! Loads directly on my R4 clone card and, of course, works great under TWL++ on my DSi machines.

You are half-man, half-amazing!

Is there any drawback to reverting the use of the .spec file?
The only drawback is that TWLCFG near the start of the RAM is overwritten.

Um... :)

Let me ask it a different way: are you okay with my reverting it or does it cause issues loading into/out of TWL++?
I'm okay with it, though it'll cause returning to TWLMenu++ to be like a second longer, since it reloads a backup of TWLCFG, if not found in memory.
Why do you want the emulator to boot in regular flashcard kernels though?

Mainly because not everyone will want to run TWL++ if they have an R4 or similar flashcart. They may just want to slap on the .NDS and go. That's what I did for the last couple of years. In short: I'd like to make access to the emulator as easy as possible and if I don't have to force someone to use TWL++ (superior though it may be!) or HBMENU, I'd like them to be able to launch it directly and easily.

Hello, I would like to update my Unlaunch and TWLM++. Currently on my DSi SD card I have an Unlaunch.nds and not an Unlaunch.dsi. Should I replace that to update unlaunch? Then afterwards I assume I have to copy the TWLM++ files in the process mentioned on <link to relevant website>

Also, Is it a better idea to update Twilight menu first, or to update unlaunch first?

My apologies if it seems I do not know what I am talking about because I genuinely don't.

Regards,
Thorgoo

How big is your SD card and how long did you wait? On large SD cards it can take quite a while for hiyaCFW to boot, so you might just need to wait longer.
If you don't need the SDNAND version of the home menu what you can do is just boot the first "Launcher" from Unlaunch and it'll take you to the SysNAND DSi Menu and to boot to TWiLight Menu++ you can boot the "TWiLight Menu++" that shows "sdmc:/BOOT.NDS" on the bottom screen, both of which boot fast regardless of the SD card size.

It doesn't matter which order you update them in.

https://wiki.ds-homebrew.com/twilightmenu/updating-dsi is the official guide for updating TWiLight and for Unlaunch just follow the relevant parts of https://dsi.cfw.guide/installing-unlaunch again.

If you already have Unlaunch v1.8 or newer then there's not really much benefit to updating fyi, anything older than that it's probably good to update though.

Thanks for the information. I just checked - My version says 1.9 when I run it on my DSi, so I guess that is ok.

My current version of TWiL++ is v9 so this will be quite an upgrade!

Is there a changelog available for unlaunch?

also gonna install twilight menu in my r4 flashcard
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
One thing that just occurred to me.... The sound on the 2600 sucked less back then the harsh sound we hear now is from infinitely better speakers we have now, back when the 2600 was new speakers produced a almost muffled sound, like CRTs made old graphics look slightly better.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I wonder if I could recommend that to some emulation devs that perhaps the sound could use some smoothing out to simulate those old TVs
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way

It's old but it's the best firmware out for DS stuff
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
it says it only works for the original R4, R4i Gold (r4ids.cn), R4iDSN (r4idsn.com) and Acekard R.P.G.
  • Xdqwerty @ Xdqwerty:
    nvm it does support mine

Just give it a try, but honestly if you have a 3DS you can play DS games without a card just off the internal SD card
