Well, as the title says, I installed regular 3ds xl firmware onto a new 3ds xl back when it was necessary to downgrade to hack your 3ds. I did not make a nand copy but I can get my hands on a ntrboot compatible r4 card if that will fix anything. The 3ds used to be able to open recovery mode but then not go further.

One day I was able to open the menu somehow and it was working albeit flicking different colours like crazy. I tried to insert a game to update it but that just made things worse. Now the 3ds doesn't turn on, when you power it on normally it shows "An error has occurred. Hold down the power button......" on the bottom screen with the colours flickering and recovery mode just shows a black screen. Though it does turn the yellow network light on which it doesn't in normal power on.

Can the r4 card somehow help or am I screwed? This brick happened like a year or so ago but I was wondering if I needed to replace the motherboard or not.

Should be fixable with CTRTransfer Type D9
Standard CTRTransfer might be insufficient.

Backup the current, bricked state before attempting any repairs.

What A9LH installation guide did not include the advise to backup the NAND?

Honestly, I don't even remember what I was following at the time, this was a good few years ago, like 2-3. I'm pretty sure it did advise me to make a NAND backup, but I was foolish on that. The little bit of text below your post unfortunately applies to me.

Sorry. I didn't want to look rude. My signature is a general advise to backup important data. It's not meant to offend anybody. Admittedly it looks a bit sarcastic whenever I reply to a thread about data loss.

You will need temporary access to any other DS system to flash ntrboothax onto your R4 (if it is not a preflashed one). Install B9S with ntrboot and firmware repair should be possible.

Good luck!

Ah thanks, though I'm not sure if I can get access to another DS system. The old 3ds I used to have is literally in two pieces somewhere and I lost my 2 NDS's a long time ago.

Did you succeed in installing A9LH to the bricked system? What happens when you power on the bricked system while holding Select?

Ah no, I haven't done anything yet. As my country flag implies, I live in a rather weird place for Nintendo products. I'm gonna order the R4 card rn and it will arrive in a few days. There is an instant delivery option because I live right next to China but anyway, we'll see when it gets here. I was just making sure it was possible to recover the 3ds with a r4 first or it might've been a waste of money.

If you are asking what happens when I turn it as is right now on while holding select then nothing different from what I said happened from a normal power up, "An error has occurred. Hold down......"

Buying a preflashed cart is an option if you're not sure if you can get access to a console to flash ntrboot.
What are pre-flashed cards called specifically anyway? I'll have to look for somewhere where I can get them.

Is this for if regular CTRTransfer doesn't work and I need Type D9 or do all versions require another DS

If you have an ntrboot compatible DS flashcart, you can do either type of CTRTransfer. If you don't already have an ntrboot compatible flashcart (with ntrboot installed to the flashcart), then you should buy one that already has ntrboot preinstalled.

Are there specific words I need to search for this? I can't find any cards when I search "R4 ntrboot preinstalled" or any other combination of those words.

Buy one of the flashcarts listed here: https://3ds.hacks.guide/ntrboot.html

It is recommended that you buy one pre-flashed with ntrboot if you don't already have a compatible DS flashcart.
