CD Projekt reveals sales numbers for Cyberpunk 2077, over 13 million sold, with refunds included

CD-Projekt-Red.jpg

Tensions are high at CD Projekt Red, but it looks like despite all the drama surrounding Cyberpunk 2077, the game has performed quite well. The company has reported its estimated sales numbers for Cyberpunk 2077: over 13 million copies sold. This figure also takes into account the refunds from the PlayStation Network, physical store stock returns, and refund requests across all platforms. Even factoring in the refunds, this makes the game one of the biggest launches of this year. Currently, CD Projekt is still taking refund requests, if you filled out their forum prior to December 21st, and will compensate buyers of the physical console editions with either a full refund or a GOG/Steam PC copy, providing that you mail your disc copy to them, with the company willing to pay for postage costs.

It also has to offer a narrative that is rarely, if at all, handled by other video games. Cyberpunk's world is second to none, simultaneously a grimey crime-ridden distopia and a neon-filled technological utopia. It feels more realistic than most, too. It's not constantly dark, you're not playing at night 24/7 - the sun rises, you get to see the nooks and crannies, and the world functions. You don't fight generic "bandits" sitting in bushes down the road either, you deal with organ harvesters, human traffickers, the game's heavy, and it's fun. Once the bugs and glitches are ironed out I'm confident it will enter the pantheon of the best games of all time, in addition to the pinnacle of its genre. I haven't played a better cyberpunk game since Human Revolution, and those are pretty big shoes to fill.

And apparently it's a crime not to like games like this, according to the internet /s

It's one thing to not like something and completely another to dismiss it as worthless. The same applies to cinema - there's lots of movies I personally dislike that redefined cinematography, personal preferences aren't important in the grand scheme of things. I couldn't force myself to slog through A Space Odyssey, but without it the face of sci-fi would be very different today.

I just don't agree with how it was launched, how CDPR was treating its employees, forcing six day work weeks, time crunch. Yeah, and then they "forget to focus" on last gen console versions, all the hype, hard pass.

Can't say I've ever had issues with crunch time, that's how any creative industry works. Regarding last gen systems, there's a saying in my home country - you can't weave a whip out of s*it, they are nearly a decade old now. I've seen this happen before with Skyrim and GTA V on PS3/360, or even with Fallout 76 on PS4/XBONE, like it or not they're on their way out. I really hope the game gets optimised for last gen because it really deserves to be played.

I mean i do get that the narrative is good but it's so hard to get invested when there are so many irritating elements. I personally prefer gameplay over narrative and graphics so for me it seems the gameplay needed work. Also the fact that random npcs go full T pose or the fact that water doesn't splash takes the immersiveness out of the game.

But then they did confirm that they're working really good on last Gen consoles. So yea their intention was to deceive because the whole game isn't playable. If it was just one or 2 areas then they would've gotten the benefit of the doubt

So for people that insist the game is okay:

I played Japanese Sonic Adventure (the 1998 version instead of International that's Sonic Adventure 1999) and is nowhere as buggy as this game. And remember that was a debut game on a new console they had less that two years to work on.

I'm old enough to remember Myth II potentially formatting your C:\ drive when you tried to uninstall it because it was coded to blank whatever directory it was installed in, these bugs are bush league, in both games.

I can't wait to try out this game - I actually want to play it myself instead of feeding into the internet hate machine.

I played a bunch of games that had terrible glitches and problems with them according to gaming society, and still loved playing them. It's all about having fun!

It seems like a interesting game, and if I was 18 (and had enough money) I would be thinking about getting it, but I would probably wait for patches to come out. In fact I feel as though this would be another NMS situation, just way bigger.

what are people's thoughts that in today's age a game that sells 13 mil copies in 10 days is marked as not meet expectations?

I'm sure people have read my opinions on games being broken on launch, so I'll straight up admit: I'm about to be a hypocrite here.

While the game is certainly buggy, especially with some hyper critical, needs to be fixed yesterday, level of bugs; the game was always going to see well. I'm sure many didn't expect it to be this buggy, but buggy in some way. After all, the game has been delayed many times. Nearly a full 10 year dev cycle, which almost always never go well.

Despite the flack the company is currently getting, their refund policy has (once platform issues were fixed) has been stellar. Not only that, but we know that they'd never completely accept it in such a broken state, so it's garunteed to get fixed. No company, no matter how good, could get away from the negative pr it would generate.

CDPR seems to have been willing to take the hit to their pr in order to get the game out faster, eventually acklowedging that they could, and should, have done better. I'm sure that many, like myself, expect them to hold to that promise.

Combined with the acklowledgment that they could have done better, offering an incredible refund policy, and with their general track record, I'm sure I'm not the only one who is willing to give them a chance to fix the situation as they have already gone well beyond in terms of good faith than pretty much any other company in the industry.

Hopefully they can learn from this whole event, fix everything and regain even a percentage of their lost respect and influence. I'm atleast, unlike when it comes to other companies, willing to give them a chance.

Deserved honestly. I had no hype for this game, I forgot it was even coming out till a few days before it did.

It's a very fun game. It could definitely use some bug patches but 99% of the bugs i've encountered have been harmless or hilarious. In a game this size you should just expect bugs. It's impossible to get them all.
It also really needs some balancing patches cuz man is it easy to break the crafting and selling mechanic lol. But that's not a big deal either

The story, writing and visuals are all great. Really fun game. Fun as hell running around with a katana just cutting dudes heads off. There's a ridiculous amount of quests all over the place and quite a few of them are actually interesting. Usually I just play these games and don't give a shit about any of the dialogue, but with Cyberpunk I actually play with the sound on. Pretty sure I also spent a solid half an hour just watching TV in game.

what are people's thoughts that in today's age a game that sells 13 mil copies in 10 days is marked as not meet expectations?

Expectations are drawn from all sorts of factors. Usually the developer's past titles and also how much the game cost to develop.

I can't even imagine what this game sold if they didn't release it essentially for free on GOG. GOG makes piracy stupid easy. It's hard to even call it piracy when you just use GoG's little installer to download and install the game for free.

Good for them, good devs need to continue producing good games with financial support. Too much games to go through in the backlog. Will grab it when the complete edition comes out and on sale.

For me to spend my hard earned money on a $60 game it can be a beta. I dont accept the buy the beat now then download the patch after launch. not acceptable. SO i will just pirate it. I bet breath of the wild 2 will work with minimal bugs when its launched. People can hate on Nintendo's game but they usually dont release beta games that need a day one patch. there may be a patch but the game is fully functional with out it.

Yeah i use nintendo as and example because who else am i supposed to use as an example?
