PlayStation 3 updated to official firmware version 4.87

No, you didn't accidentally wake up 10 years ago; the PlayStation really did receive a brand new firmware update in the year 2020. Just like the Nintendo 3DS did earlier this year, the PS3 has gotten an update out of nowhere, bringing the system to version number 4.87. Sony says that this new firmware serves to improve the console's system performance, but what that vague statement really means is that the PlayStation 3 got its update so that it could play the most recent Blu-ray movie discs. At least, according to the RPCS3 PS3 emulator team.

Anyone still using their PlayStation 3, and a hacked one at that, will want to refrain from updating to 4.87, though scene hacker Joonie has put out HFW 4.87.1, and says that PS3HEN should be updated relatively soon, as the new firmware doesn't make any changes to the kernel. As a reminder, HFW (hybrid firmware) does not mean CFW (custom firmware). SEN Enabler has also been updated to support spoofing the PlayStation Network for those not on 4.87.

just like they do every year they just updated the blurays keys so newer blurays work on it, i suppose they will keep doing this for a couple more years imo.
That's fair, and pretty cool of them. Unlike Nintendo, releasing an official YouTube app for the Wii which crashes when you look at it wrong, only to discontinue support for it the following year. Big N are douchebags...

Sony be like:

PS3 support flatlining:

PS3 support team: *grabs electric cooling probes*

*places them on PS3's CELL processor that's overheating thanks to the use of lead-free solder*

"CLEAR!"

*Hot air comes blowing out of the system's CPU, and lowers the temps*

*PS3 support monitor no longer flatlining*

It means you can play newer Blu-ray movies on your PS3, now that the newest keys have been released for it. Many people keep their PS3 around for movie playback.

It's great for me, because I've got an old PS3 that I don't use anymore, and my parents get so excited when they use it. It's an easy bluray machine for them to not have to go buy a new one.

So when the keys are no longer updated I cannot watch any Blu-ray movies any longer?
afaik, only discs that release AFTER that support ends.

I actually installed this update a week before I homebrewed mine, and its harder to homebrew with the 4.87 update but its possible.

This is nice to see as Blu ray is still popular right now.. but it's only a matter of time before it goes the way of VHS. There are probably also environmental incentives to stop producing the discs and switch to streaming.
I actually still have E.T on vhs, I love retro stuff like the VHS and Cassette tapes.

It's also good as an AIO console in place of a PC IMO...if the model meets these requirements:

*PS2 hardware BC
*Said George Foreman grill model has been cleaned of the filth that is lead free solder
*You replace some of the cheap NEC capacitors that might be the REAL cause behind PS3 users' YLODs.
*Mod the thing with CFW.

And then I'd suggest putting the whole thing in a less bulky case. Seriously, the things a PS3 could do back in the day made it a good substitute for a PC when HS Silent_Gunner couldn't do certain things on his PC...

...like ripping music from CDs onto MP3s! What were you thinking!? :rofl2:

newer ones? well no, imagine that sony doesnt update their bluray keys(sony and every bluray player that is) when a bluray releases on 2022 for instance the ps3 wont be able to play it but every bluray ever made until 2021 will work just fine since their decoding keys are still there.

every bluray player must update every couple of years for new encryption keys.

Im not 100% sure, but a homebrewed ps3 may be able to update the Blu-Ray keys.
