Hi all,

I have not been able to find an answer to this question after doing a lot of searching and reading, and I would like to be more sure before I decide to hack my switch.

I am planning to hack my launch-day Switch and install a CFW. I will be setting up 90DNS to prevent it from connecting to Nintendo servers/sending telemetry data to Nintendo, but I understand that there is still a possible risk of getting banned as long as my hacked Switch is able to connect to the internet.

My roommates have their own Switches in the same house, using the same internet connection as my future hacked Switch. They have expressed concern that Nintendo may ban their consoles, just because they are in the same house as a hacked Switch. I don't know what to tell them.

Has there been any reports of unhacked Switches getting banned simply for being in the same household (IP address) as a hacked Switch?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for your reply. I will let my roommates know.

I am getting another new Switch and I will be transferring all my games, saves, and my Nintendo account over to it, then factory-resetting the hackable Switch and doing a NAND backup prior to hacking it.

I will be sure to set up the hacked Switch with an alternate Nintendo account, completely separate from my Nintendo account with all my purchased games, prior to hacking it. And of course, set up 90DNS. Hopefully this will be enough to prevent bans!

If you want someday to go back online you need to restore a clean NAND made prior to loading CFW, so if you had an unpatched unit you can load up Hekate and make a backup first before loading Atmosphere and installing backup.

This is what I plan on doing, and it's included in the switch.homebrew.guide setup guide. I'll keep the clean NAND backup in a safe place in case I ever decide I want to take the unpatched Switch back online.
Thanks again for your help :)

I have read through the switch.homebrew.guide setup throughly and it seems to make sense.
Can you please explain why this birbchirp guide is better?

Unlike the switch.homebrew.guide, birb's guide gives you patches. However you can just get the patches from here after following the switch.homebrew guide.

Hi,

How does one get a clean nand backup if they're using SX Pro (no auto rcm, etc.) And have never backed up before? This is for a v0 switch.

Thank you

It is advised to also use incognito_RCM to erase the identifying info of your switch, this way even if 90DNS were to fail your switch would still have no way of communicating with Nintendos servers and getting you banned.
And yeah you can reassure your roommates, they are completely safe even if you were to get banned.

Is using exosphere.ini to blank the prodinfo in emuMMC enough, or should I still use Incognito_RCM?

No one advises this because what happens when Nintendo uses the other information not wiped by Incognito to track and ban your console? 90DNS is actually the safer one because unlike Incognito, you are not permanently banned without a backup.

Neither, 90DNS is sufficient. Anyone who tells you otherwise is paranoid without proof.

I thought not having a valid serial prevented purely and simply your switch from connecting to the servers, is that not correct ? And what kind of information isn't erased that could identify your device ? I'm genuinely curious to learn why what I said was incorrect, so if you find the time to explain it to me that would be very kind !

Also wouldn't there be a risk of using 90DNS only if in Nintendo were to change their domain names ? I understand that this is extremely unlikely to ever happen but just as a theoretical question, if Nintendo were to change their domains without the 90DNS team knowing about it/adapting quickly enough, wouldn't their DNS just forward your console's requests to the new servers ?

90dns isn't safe because it's dns servers are constantly overloaded, or your own isp will do dns redirects.

Everyone should run the 90dns self test before they use it and see how many services fail. They include the self test on their gitlab page.

As for Nintendo changing the way the system works to capture system information for banning purposes, stopping incognito. I have a feeling if Nintendo cared that much, they would have already done so. Adding that feature is trivial. Incognito came out in Feb 2019. Nintendo has 13 firmware releases since then. They either don't care, or they can't.

AtlasNX had a list of reasons on why Incognito was not recommended including but not limited to:
  • It doesn't wipe all information from Prodinfo. A very bad example there is the consoleid which does not get wiped
  • Important Prodinfo data is cached in system save files
  • This means the switch TRIES to send identifiable information to Nintendo. They just decide to not accept the connection and do something with it at the moment
  • If Nintendo decides to allow access to some services without any prodinfo data you're screwed.
  • It wipes some important things out of your Prodinfo so if you're careless and you loose that prodinfo backup because your SD card corrupts or something you're fucked
And while Nintendo could change domain names, since the birth of 90DNS which is well over 2 years now, they have not once probably for a variety of reasons such as the fact that 90DNS could adapt the new domain names. But instead what has happened is people have either lost their PRODINFO backup or never made one before using Incognito which results in a worse situation than Nintendo adding a new domain. There are so many people who lost their PRODINFO that they could form their own subforum
