Hello everyone,

I bought a SD-Gecko and a SD2SP2 and I'm wondering, do I need a real memory card to hack my Gamecube ?
I thought ont SD-Gecko and a SD2SP2 would be enough as I'm gonna put swiiss on the SD2SP2 ...

Thanks for your answer.

You need an entry point to start homebrew software (Swiss). That can be:
  • Save exploit (→ Memory Card containing the modified save and legit disc from the same region as the console)
  • Datel SD media Launcher (→ SD non-HC, max 2GB for the Datel software, After loading Swiss any SDHC or SDXC should do)
  • Burned Swiss DVD (→ solder in cheap XenoGC clone modchip, most likely adjusting potentiometer)
  • IPL Replacement modchip
  • GC Loader (the new optical drive emulator)
As far as I know saving games still requires a Memory Card and does not work on SD2SP2 or SD-Gecko

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for your answer.

Actually I've got :

Splinter Cell (PAL version)
SD2SP2
SD-Gecko

I do not have a "real" memory card atm (I don(t need to save games right now, it's to see if everything is working).

Can't I use the SD-Gecko as the main memory card ? (I upload the modified save file on it, put Swissi on the microSd on the SD2SP2 ? and voilà ?

If you can get your hands on an action replay disc, you can simply use that to load Swiss from the SD-Gecko instead of using a save exploit on a memory card.

https://www.codejunkies.com/Products/SD-Media-Launcher__EF000580V.aspx < This is actually what I ended up purchasing myself when I decided to use homebrew on my GC, it comes with a MC->Micro SD card adapter, and then the action replay disc needed to launch .dol's from the memory card adapter (or your SD-gecko, either should work fine). If you can't get your hands on a memory card with the needed save exploit, that may be your best bet.

Necro-ing the hell out of this thread, but I have to ask:

If you have a DOL-001 (US region) GC who's mini-DVD drive is so unreliable that trying a disc out to fix things would be a fool's errand, is there any other way to get past the need for a disc to try and boot anything? GC games, homebrew, whatever? Because I would like to give some of these old systems that are laying around new lives.

the only way is with a modchip like the Qoob or one of these [not too cheap] SD readers that replace the optical drive

I haven't been gaming for such a long time. Been mostly busy with sleep, hardware tinkering and checking GBAtemp frequently.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Hope you've had a good morning.

It's going alright thanks :) I know what you mean with gaming time. It's precious where I can get it these days.

I think that's why I focus on just enjoying single player experiences that aren't too competitive

    How are you doing?

There's also this thing where I'm hyperfocused at night and cannot get to sleep.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
    @Maximumbeans, I'm doing alright, thanks.

That must be rough. Productive I'm sure but hard to balance with daily life

@Maximumbeans, Indeed. I've been working on getting this Infecutus chip to work on my PS2. But after soldering, I realised that a plastic piece was missing from the power ribbon cable to the power and eject buttons.
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Now I could go with soldering the contacts from the cable to the connector on the mobo, but doesn't sound like a good permanent solution.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Man, that's beyond my brain  I'm no good with hardware for now. I'd like to get into hardmods in future though
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Maybe start practice soldering. Get a cheap-ass soldering iron and follow some good YouTube tutorials.

  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
Least my experience has gotten better than over a decade ago. My iron would constantly bump into components and break them.
  • Maximumbeans @ Maximumbeans:
Sounds good. I actually did soldering but like 16 years ago for school so uuuuh probably rusty haha
  • SylverReZ @ SylverReZ:
@Maximumbeans, Same here. I did soldering at school from a teacher who I honestly liked since he had plenty of good electronics experience.

@Maximumbeans, I had a friend who had a glass chess set for their birthday.

It was like all clear and fancy. Tbf I'm not too experienced with chess, but would like to learn someday.
