I've found a way to turn off texture filtering in battle and overworld map. See screenshots below:

I know many people don't like the hq2x filter applied to these environments. So, If you don't like the smooth filter applied to these environments, just use the mod attached.

I've only tested on sxos, though I think it can work on other CFWs.

How to Install:

- Unzip the attached file and copy its contents to you sd card inside folder \sxos\titles

Can we just get a basic bilinear blur on them instead please?
You can edit the glsl shader inside the zip to whatever filter you like. Maybe some day I'll have time to edit and test it. For me, it seems the hq2x shader used in this game was copied from Retroarch's shaders repositories. Anyway, I think other shaders from there can be copied to this glsl (keeping the same name).

EDIT: I'll try some retroarch shaders later. If some of them work, I'll post here.

Ok, I did some tests and indeed it accepted some shaders. I've managed to port three of them: Bilinear, AdvancedAA and ReverseAA.

I personally prefer the results of ReverseAA. AdvancedAA is useless because it basically identical to hq2x. So you should choose among NoFilter, Bilinear or ReverseAA, IMHO.

Some screenshots:

Be careful when changing shaders: you HAVE TO delete previous shaders. DO NOT copy over the old ones. I've attached three new ones. I mean, delete all previous tree folde of yout title ID, then you copy the new folders inside sxos\titles.

This is really great, thank you!
Any chance you could give FFVII a whack? We tried removing the filters back when it released but didnt have much luck outselves

This is amazing, thank you. Does the other ff psx ports suffer from this too??

Can you port the sharp-bilinear-simple shadder from the retro folder in retroarch?
Thanks

I ported a similar shader (quilez), but couldn't notice any visible difference from NoFiltering one. So, it's useless. I guess the game has some kind of anti-aliasing post-process which already smooths pixels a bit.

Now, I've figured out the shaders applied to 2d static backgrounds. The shader for static backgrounds are those named as 2xsal. Unfortunately the hardware is set to LINEAR sampling for these shaders (the texture filtering shaders are set to NEAREST sampling), since most filters available for free on other repositories only work when the sampling is set to NEAREST.

Anyway, I've managed to port three of them: quilez (it's like sharp-bilinear or pixellate), jinc2 family and lanczos2-sharp.

Quilez (you can see soft pixels):

Jinc2-sharper:

I've attached all of them. They install the same way the other texture shaders. You can combine a background shader with one texture filtering shader. All shaders are located at the same folder, just compare both zips and you can figure out.

After testing these, I prefer jinc2-sharp for backgrounds. It has the best compromise between sharpness and anti-aliasing.

I can confirm the background shaders work on FF7. You just need to put them at the FF7' shaders folder. I mean, just copy the glsl files to the shaders folder.

About Texture Filtering shaders, I didn't find which ones are used in FF7 (the FF8 ones don't exist here).

And crt shader seems good:

Some more background filters for FF7 and FF8 attached.

For some reason, the crt shader only works well with Switch undocked or docked 720p. If you set the Switch to 1080p when docked, some artifacts appear. It seems FF doesn't run exactly at 1080p and I didn't find the real resolution the Switch is sending to TV.

You can mix the advanceAA with any shade for ff7 in my case mix the advanceAA with lanczos2-sharp. and the result is good. at least on a laptop. it gives the necessary contrast and removes the excess softening giving rise to more scenarios. sharp without pixels in final fantasy 7...sorry mi inglish google no good traduccion

I dont really know about this stuff but after dumping the shader folder of ff7 I have found that the Shaders that correspond to the Texture Filtering/Battle backgrounds are named "hq4x_p.glsl" and "hq4x_vv.glsl". i tried to rename the ones you were using with FF8, but they appear glitched, I also renamed the ff7 pixelated background filter and IT WORKS on the battle backgrounds, but the menus and character faces are glitched. So maybe they need a little bit of porting... It would be amazing if you could make a NO Filter Version or a Pixelate version for FF7

Also I want to thank you for this shaders. Because of the Sephiroth in smash reveal, I wanted to play ff7 again. The pixelated shader make the game background and movies look more in line with the ps1.

Hey Hyllian. Maybe you are not more interested in this, but i will ask anyway. I have found a glitch in the FF7 pixellate Shader. In the Conference Room in the Shinra HQ the lights appear all black, black circles. And the pink panel behind the chairman is lacking color appearing grey instead of pink. This doesn't happen with any other of your shaders. So I was wondering of you could look into it. Im very grateful of your work it make this ports even better. Thank you

Does anyone know of a method to apply no texture filtering in the PC / Steam release?

I know this is for the Switch, but this is the only place online which relates to what I want.

In yuzu where you need to drop this? Been trying to make this work without success.
Get these zip attached. Read the txt inside with instructions. I recommend increase resolution to 2x or higher in yuzu settings.

Found a way to disable texture filtering on FF7 too.
