GCN How to update the older Kaico hdmi adapters to GCvideo 3.0e

Through email correspondence that took almost a month of emails telling me to update via the gcvideo updater .dol (impossible on 2.4d) i was finally given what i needed. in short it is a shrunken v3 clone as they instructed me to use a xilinx usb programmer to update while it was plugged in. while i did not have that i did have a tl866ii plus universal programmer and was able to install gcvideo 3.0e my removing the 25p40vp spi flash chip and after making a backup flashing the bin file in the shuruken v3 .bin file.

if you do this method you loose the remotes programming but can add a switch to sw1 location on the board to reprogram the remote.
and for anyone else who has had trouble with this, here is .docx file on my onedrive of the xilink update process for anyone who happens to already have one.

Wow so the more expensive for no damn reason Kaico HDMI comes with the WOW so outdated GCVideo 2.4 firmware just goes to show paying for more for something u get fucked smh

I got the Chinese 3d printed shell one and came with 3.0d and updated via Swiss to 3.0e

Grand total was $52.69 GCPlug + HDMI + Remote

I got the Chinese 3d printed shell one and came with 3.0d and updated via Swiss to 3.0e

i almost got a gcplug and didnt see one with a remote, I wanted a metal connector and remote but didnt want to spring on the carby, and got this for $63 at the time i bought it. mine was probably old stock, but it is advertised as being installed with 3.0 on amazon. to be fair out side of kaico and there reputation the adapter is actually built quite well, and fairly easy to disassemble and work on if needed. they did offer to send me another one with 3.0e confirmed on it, but i was pretty adamant on finding a solution not just for me but for others without the option to return it for a swap.

I've just resurrected a junk PAL GC DOL-001 and I was wondering what are my options for getting GCVideo on a budget. I also got a Game Boy Player, and kinda looking forward to see dem carts playing sharp. Any advises?

Yup, it looks closely to that on the outside. Dunno insides. But costing like 20 euro less. Should I go for that?

I'll leave that up to you, build quality should be good but if it is 2.4d you'd be stuck with that unless you can flash it to update.
just ask the seller if possible about what version of gcvideo it has on it.

Says it cames with 3.0d and is updatable to 3.0e, so I'm going to get it.

Definitely should have ordered a Carby instead, especially since I ordered the adapter before I heard about Kaico reverse engineering and ripping off closed source projects and selling them.

Oh well.

I can't imagine 3.0 makes much of a difference except to people examining the pixels on their screen with a magnifying glass. XD

Just got the Bitfunx hdmi on the mail, the build materials are great, it's sturdy and not excesively heavy, I can connect both the adapter and the original AV cable at the same time and got to update it to latest 3.0e GCVideo for less than 50 € after taxes. Being my GC a PAL version, I'm very happy with the product and the results. Now the problem is my TV.

Won't swallow 240p60 from GBP and has audio drift issues. Gosh am I unlucky.

That audio channel is not affected by TV audio drift, as it is analog audio.

It was more of a prototype device made for the general public. I wouldn't blame it on user error, it was just a terrible product.

GCPlug may have some quality issues, probably more now since they are around $50. I would spend a bit more for something with a better console connector and a sturdier (non mini-) HDMI port like Carby or this Kaico adapter. But I don't think they caused any damaged console.

I don't think there's any reverse engineering going on. gcvideo is open source and shuriken v3 might not have a license, but it's EDA design files were released. ZXPs PnP and (at least) early Carby was modified from it utilizing similar layout and choice of the through-hole regulator.
Kaico board is most likely redesigned, they (like most) just choose to use the same layout that has a firmware that is pre-complied.

3.0 fixed some video and audio bug that most probably wouldn't care. If you're using GB Player you will probably want to update though as I think it'll be more noticeable there and if you're using GBI, there might be some support for some of its output.

Half tempted to still buy a Carby, and just sell off the Kaico adapter for a slight loss. That ability to update through the Gamecube itself on 3.0 is too good to pass up.

Ah, ok. I had briefly read about it being a most likely a clone when the product was announced. I didn't realize it was from the same company (Kaico).

Glad this was of help to you, Kaico cumstomer support is hard to get info from. The adapter is really decent build quality for the price shame they pretty much lie about it being updated on amazon.
