Oculus Quest 2 promo video and details leaked

Despite widespread backlash over Facebook's decision to require Facebook logins for its Oculus VR headsets, the social media giant is not letting go of its VR ambitions. In fact, the company has been working on its next-gen VR headset and details of the Oculus Quest 2 leaked today on Facebook Blueprint, Facebook's marketing hub. While these information have been taken down on the official site, it's the internet and nothing really "disappears", especially when it comes to details of an unannounced gaming device.

These leaks in question were two promotional videos, with the first one introducing the Oculus Quest 2, which is a standalone VR headset like the first Quest:

The second video detailed the specs of the device. It reveals that the Quest 2 will come packed with a Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 processor, 6GB RAM and up to 256GB of storage (the original Quest had 4GB of RAM and a max. storage capacity of 128 GB).

It also boasts 3D positional audio, improved "soft-touch" headstraps, a lighter and “streamlined” form factor, controller-free hand tracking, as well as improved controllers with “new ergonomics”. The resolution is also said to be "nearly 2K Resolution per eye". The Oculus Quest 2 will also be compatible with the Oculus Link cable to expand the game's library with a VR-ready PC.

What's not known is the display’s refresh rate nor the price. The latter was rumored to be $399 according to a Walmart listing. These might be revealed as soon as this week as the Facebook Blueprint site also mentioned a pair of live demos of the Oculus Quest 2 scheduled for September 16th and 17th.

So what do you think of the Oculus Quest 2 from the details leaked?

In regards to VR taking over gaming: whether or not it happens, there will be at least some games that just work better- conceptually- with more traditional input and output.
Think about motion controls- Wii Sports would suck if you tried playing it on mouse and keyboard, but most people could probably give a decent list of games that were ruined because they had motion controls forced into them.

I will say that requiring Facebook logins is going to slow the adoption of VR. People are going to be pretty mad about it. I'm not quite sure why they thought it was a good idea, especially this early on.

Yeah, "leaked". I know others and myself won't be buying this due to Facebook's forced account bs, but that's not going to stop casual buyers from getting in on it.

I'm sure it's going to be good and the link support is nice, but boy do I wish some other companies would come out with a competitive wireless headset.

Can you not just make a second account with a second email just for the occulus? Make it your professional or business facebook? I don't have any experience with occulus, but would this work?

I am still waiting for the Rift 2 . . .
Sadly we got the Rift S instead . . .
The Quest was a great move for VR as a whole so not surprised to see a Quest 2 popping up already.
I'll be honest though the white color is a total turn off for me. Would like a black option in the future.
In my case i prefer having the sensor setup because they provide better tracking. I also use a Kinect V2 for full body tracking so having a proper VR setup in my new gaming room since i just bought a house makes total sense :P
Hopefully the Rift 2 will be out within another year.

Would it work? Sure. But the issue is that it shouldn't need a Facebook account to use the device in the first place (y'know, like what was literally promised by the owner of Oculus the day Facebook bought them out).

Whether it's a throwaway or not, Facebook can and does collect information about you from your activities with the headset, and even if it's a meaningless throw away account with seemingly no ties to your own that's a big deal. Private mega corporations should not be allowed to collect and sell information about your habits to whomever they please for their own profit without your consent (and I don't count blindly clicking "I agree" for a ToS as true consent), especially when there's no way at all to disable that information from being collected.

so if I don't want oculus anymore what are my options?

In the PCVR market there are lots of choices. I will probably be happy with my Pimax Vision 8KX for years to come, but that one is expensive as heck (got it for half the retail price thanks to its Kickstarter campaign). Then there's the Valve Index, some Windows Mixed Reality Headsets and so on.

Sadly, finding a substitute for an Oculus Quest is harder. There is the Pico Neo 2, but that's a business HMD (though it's priced decently) and might not have a variety of games to make it appeal to consumers.

This would be the time to release an HMD that can do VR without any external processing power and that makes use of Steams infrastructure. Something along the lines of a wireless Index. If it also came with a wireless substitute for Oculus Link that would probably be an immediate buy from me.

And regarding the topic of VR becoming the main medium of gaming that someone brought up: Why would that even be necessary? As long as the games you actually play on it warrant the price and make you come back, you'll be fine, even if the bulk of your gaming happens traditionally.

I’m signed in my oculus with an oculus account not Facebook and my other One I have Facebook.not hard to make an fake account so you can play online I mean if you that lazy to make one. Other wise I have no problems playing online

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Meh the whole Facebook thing is a turn-off. I barely use my Quest nowadays other than to play some PC VR through ALVR. The quest games are overpriced mostly.
All my games I have all updated and I get them for free google how and they have sidequest too

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

You have my interest...

I'd make a secondary account because apparently Zucc the Succ wants to get to know you. I miss my quest. :(

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

You've clearly never used one...

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Maybe. Maybe not. The tracking on the Quest is great but full body tracking almost requires secondary hardware. It's niche, sure..

I agree with you 100% I have great games all free too lol

Ps: Leaks are the new marketing, they create more hype than just posting videos.

VR is clearly the future. Once the tech gets cheaper, lighter, more accessible it will be WAY more than just gaming. If you dont already see it, the world is preparing us to live in the digital world, like how COVID is converting us to always live inside our home. Eventually, your office job will just be in VR, gatherings will just be in VR, going to the store (Amazon) will just be in VR. You will even play desktop games on 2d screens in VR. Better get used to it, but this will be the future, because everyone will find it more convenient, and more fun than the real world.

Tbh there's just so much ways to play games, PC/home gaming is not the same as handheld (well there's similarities especially since the Switch came out but still not the same experience imo) which is different than mobile
So adding VR as another way to experience new games isn't a bad thing, I think people tend to "diminish" VR gaming because they thought that VR gaming would at least get near being mainstream. Can't blame them tho, true VR gaming was and still is a dream, being able to travel through a virtual world would be so cool. But it just can't replace traditional home gaming. It's like saying that there's no point in writing stuff on paper since you can write stuff with computers and text editors. I don't see why people would prefer to move their entire bodies to do things that you were able to do with a simple screen, keyboard and mouse. They already can't accept the good sides of motion gaming (especially gyro aiming, cf Nerrel videos about the rejection of motion gaming) therefore I can't expect people to accept VR gaming. After a day of work I prefer to lay down on my chair and move only my thumbs and my hands a little bit but not much else

And about the Quest, isn't there other VR headsets that works similarly ? I was honestly interested in getting one Quest because I liked the thing about being able to be "independant" and being able to be connected on my PC aswell but because of Facebook I'm searching for alternatives
