Homebrew Discussion Newbie here. Im going to manually update my switch, any precautionary advice to avoid brick?

My switch cannot update via official channel anymore. Hence need to update firmware manually using choidujournx.

Is there any precaution step I can take in case I got brick or step to prevent brick?

My switch can use rcm jig.

I heard about nand backup. Does it help to restore firmware in case my update went wrong somewhere and got brick?

Any advice is appreciated.

Yes, always do a nand backup and store it somewhere safe (along with your keys and other personal console unique stuff). Updating with choi is safe, but even if you SOMEHOW fuck up, as long as you have access to hekate, you can always restore your previous nand. Also make sure to choose exFAT in choi when updating.

Backup your nand with hekate,
download the firmware you want and extract it to your sd card.
You should consider having the latest Atmosphere cfw and update with daybreak instead of choix du jour.
Choiz hasn't been updated for a while whereas daybreak just launched.
Run the latest atmosphere after you did your backup.
Lauch homebrew menu.
Run daybreak and it will ask where in your sd card the fw is located.
And that's it.

Daybreak have safety checks and won't update your device if something doesn't seems right

I'm not too versed in these things so please excuse the question; I thought the general consensus was to format as fat32 due to exfat having corruption issues? Wouldn't you want to also select the update option that doesn't use exfat in that case?

Always use fat32 on switch. Choosing exFAT in choi just adds exFAT driver to your os so that it could read exfat sd's. But using f32 is the best option anyway.

Double check the firmware version you are going to download. Some people here "bricked" their Switch "updating" to 1.0.0 instead of 10.0.x
