I recently upgraded from a Sandisk 128 GB to a Sandisk 256 GB. I formatted the 256 as FAT32 with 64 KB cluster size, and then successfully copied all data from the old SD card to the new one.

I'm pretty sure I followed all the steps I'm supposed to, but after inserting it into the system, I get an error: "Could not detect a microSD Card. The software on the microSD card could not be displayed".

I don't believe it's an issue with the card, as it's brand new, comes from a reputable source, and my PC/portable SSD can detect it and transfer files with no problems... any ideas?

-As to quote TurdPoocharger
Check if your SD card is fake, faulty, or dying.
  1. Copy everything off the SD card to a computer.
  2. Quadruple reformat.
  3. Full Write + Verify the empty card in H2testw. Do not skip.

Regarding the quadruple format, @TurdPooCharger mentions to format with 32KB cluster in all of the formatting steps... would it make a difference if I formatted as 64KB instead? I've heard 64KB runs faster on 256GB cards.

You might want to read the few posts before and after post #30 to get the full premise.
256 GB is a lot of data to be carrying around in one card. Has yours passed hardware check in H2testw?

Metaphorically speaking, it would really suck if your basket was weak AF where it torn open and dropped all your eggs.

Thanks for the quick response! I've followed all the instructions (including the H2testw), the microSD is perfectly fine according to the test, however I tested the card on the 3DS using the test setup and while I had no issue with shuffling themes, 2/4 of the GBA injects I tested did have the screen wrapping glitch. I've reformatted the card with 32KB cluster, so hopefully it'll work now... about to test it out shortly after I get my main data on the card.

As for the size of the card - I was beginning to run out of space on my 128GB (I have a lot of clutter, but still) and I'm anticipating installing a lot of titles right before the 3DS eShop shuts down, which I'm operating under the assumption is not that far away into the future.

If the GBA VC screen wrapping occurs on 32 KB cluster size, you can try...
  • (1) Backing up the .GBA roms and raw .SAV for problematic titles with GBAVCSM. Reinject the titles in NSUI beta 27 using different ROM save type(s). Install the replacement CIA injections, and restore the saves.
  • (2) Play the games in mGBA , RetroArch (gpSP) , TWiLight Menu++ (GBARunner2) , and/or open_agb_firm.
  • (3) If the return period is still good, return the SanDisk 256 GB microSDXC, and try another brand (or get another different 256 GB card). Check my signature.

Here is how I resolved similar issue with SD card.

When I inserted new SD card into 2DS XL i was getting message "Could not detect a microSD card. The software on the microSD card could not be displayed."

I tried formatting to FAT32 but it still did not fix the issue.
I then used "MiniTool Partition Wizard" to delete ALL the partition in SD card so drive letter ("D" in my case), and label name and partition ALL were deleted, and then I re-created the partition using "MiniTool Partition Wizard" with same "D" letter for drive and with format as FAT32.

Then I copied the data and this solved the problem.

Make sure it is FAT32, 32kb cluster, physical partition
