To relieve games from consoles of yesteryear, Retroarch is a must-have on the Switch. This multi-system frontend allows you to install various retro consoles from the NES to the Dreamcast as cores and play them right on the Switch. To get started, check out the video below or join our official thread.

If you prefer standalone apps for emulating retro consoles, check out our previous article where we listed our 5 favourite ones.

3. Tesla

Another useful app from @WerWolv is Tesla. It’s an overlay menu for the Switch that serves as a frontend for sysmodules. It allows the user to select other overlays to be loaded. It’s also a tool for developers to create new overlays. Tesla also supports other apps such as Emuiibo and Freebird for additional functionality and clocking features.

These choi vs daybreak discussions have made me quite paranoid..I didnt know about daybreak being a firmware updater homebrew like choi. I updated my switch from 9.2 to 10.1 with choi maybe around a week ago..there isnt any problem at all currently..but should I be worried? Should I reupdate with daybreak?you guys keep talking about daybreak having more integrity etc than choi. Could my update with choi cause future problems because of the integrity lroblem etc? Thanks.

I wouldn't worry about it. The differences are mostly nuanced for the general user, but there are specific-case scenarios in which it could be ugly. It's not common, and if your system is working, then you made it past the most disastrous of potential scenarios. You can probably reapply the update using daybreak, but it's probably better that you just consider using it for the next update you install.

What is safer? Something that is time tested by the general public or something that is in theory safer.

I understand the skepticism, but you should try to understand the reasons of why it is better. If you recommend choi to the wrong person you will brick their switch--and daybreak mitigates that risk. Software depreciates over time as the working environments change, and there is a point where choi will do more harm than good.

There are quite a few people going online with cfw, myself included, that can just use the normal nintendo way.

This is reckless and not at all recommended. I honestly don't see the point of creating that unnecessary risk when emuMMC and emuNAND have been in the scene for quite a while now--allowing for a people to keep their sysNAND clean. You aren't banned, yet, but you are serving as a crash-test dummy for the rest of the HB scene. A firmware upgrader/downgrader is a staple essential for the HB scene of any console.

Why are we supposed to hate that guy?

Some noisy people liked being offended by that guy.

Goldleaf is a niche-use for me, when it comes to manually inserting NAND-based save data into my emummc. Otherwise it's totally Tinfoil. I know we are supposed to hate blawar, but don't mistake his work for your political/social undoing.
To be fair, it's kind of hard to recommend something that will intentionally soft-brick the setup of a significant portion of your readers, forcing them to setup their SDs again. Granted, that should be less of an issue now that Kosmos has been discontinued, but I don't doubt that there are still many people who are using it and haven't updated it. Recommending that they install Tinfoil is just asking for headaches. At least, assuming Blawar hasn't removed his environment bricking code yet. I don't personally use Tinfoil, so I'm not always up-to-date on the latest of his ever-changing restrictions.

I know what you mean--and what you are talking about was annoying (should be over with for now..). But please, don't be so careless about using the word brick. Tinfoil does not brick your device. It requests to remove cfw it doesn't like. Though it is invasive and undesirable, it does allow you the option to not change anything. What it does and how you describe it are so many levels different, ethically speaking. Don't get me wrong, Goldleaf is simple and useful as a file browser, but as an installer, Tinfoil is easily the supreme option--if you are capable of getting it to work.

I've just updated my firmware from 9.20 to 10.1 around a week ago with choi. My switch is unpatched v1 switch.Everything works well now..your first and 2nd point instill paranoia in me. Should I reupdate with daybreak or not? Will there be problems in the future if I dont reupdate with daybreak?

Mate, chill, if Choi was going to give you any problems, you would have known instantly because your console would not even boot after the failed update, not a big deal unless you're one of the special persons that don't keep a nand backup. You had a successful update, don't stress yourself over it.

Anyways, the fact you didn't knew Choi was kinda dangerous makes me think were the hell these noobs are getting their modding tutorials. Any half decent tutorial would say this to you in the first line in big big letters. Choi is probably in the top 3 causes of bricks, if not the top 1, go to reddit and you'll see someone pop with a bricked console due to a bad update at least 2 or 3 times every month.

I'm doing this since about one month after sxos got released, so thats a really long crash test run.
Since then atmosphere also added many additional protections for the user, to allow him to go online, like preventing of error log creation, which is ome of the main ways nintendo detects cfw.
The devs themself even say that its relativly safe, as long as you follow some ground rules, like never install nsps or xcis of games or homebrews, don't mess with nintendos online service(mods, cheats, profile picture...) and dont mess with already send telemetry, like the error log history). The devs even go online themself.

Ah, that's why I said "bricking your setup" (not device), "forcing them to setup their SDs again," and "environment bricking". I know that it isn't a hard brick, but it is a brick of sorts as it renders your CFW environment inoperable, requiring the user to fix it. I'll change it soft-brick to make it clearer that I'm not referring to a hard-brick of the device, but rather a damaging of the SD-based software environment.

The red screen is annoying but basically it just refuse to run and force you to change if you want to use it. You can always chose to leave. Not displaying icons with standard atmosphere is also not nice, some say it was't technical limitation. The change tinfoil make if you want it to actually only make hekate not able to boot HOS. You can still use launch payload to launch fusee and everything still works just fine, I believe everything that was package with Kosmos still works, at least those that I make use of still works just fine. It didn't explain how to reboot into HOS after it made the change and people uninformed will have a hard time is definitely lame and those people are justified to hate him for the pain and suffering they got from it.

*Sees ChoiDuJourNX*
*Knows that the comments was all going to be about Daybreak*

Also +1 for NX Activity Log. With the info being locked to linking the switch online to a phone app, this is a huge plus for anyone not wanting to do that (or is already banned).

And finally, a shout out for Sys-clk and its Tesla extension. It's great whenever there is a game that lag or stutters at all. I often see a game reviewed for 8/10 online, and their main complaint is drop in framerates. Right there it basically becomes a 9/10 game in most cases. There's also plenty of 60fps mods out there, and games that can be underclocked easily if you're without a charger for some reason.

Still waiting for a way to mod my Mariko switch; it came out of the box with 8.0.1. At least i have the manual dns set up so that, it doesn't update the firmware behind my back.
I doubt staying at 8.0.1 do you any good. By now lot's of game already can't run on 8.0.1.
What has that to do with home brew or you mean 90dns belongs on this list?
