Good email account services you know about?

I'd like to gradually stop using Gmail and Hotmail, but what are my other options? What would some of you recommend?

I remember I have an AOL email account though I never use that.

Tutanota is not PGP compatible, ProtonMail is. The subject line can go empty or with something not related to the email body.

ProtonMail does look very secure and overall good. I'll have to consider, thanks.

Gmail

Dude, Google recently sent an email about the Google Plus Settlement which was about our [users] information has been compromised [stolen] so I'd still say Gmail is good, but not great or very safe.

I use mail.com

Can you say what you like about it? Registration is pretty straight forward although I didn't see a page where it mentions its features, the most useful ones, anyway.

In general most people probably are accounted for by gmail, hotmail (or live or outlook or whatever it is this week), AOL still features surprisingly high, yahoo has a user or two, and you might get a few people with their ISP emails to round out the rest.
I hate them all, and support them in various capacities for people, have to redirect things to them, try to get something resembling email from other servers to them (think email notifications of books, sales, enquiries and the like on various websites), have some people do the paid offerings there, and otherwise do things. Sending things to them from something that is not them is a pain at the best and often outright impossible -- I could deal with checking the spam folder despite setting it to "don't do it, I'll handle it myself", adding yourself to all the whitelists, and every other good boy move you can think of, however it is hard to check a spam folder if it was straight vaporised as soon as it hit the server without so much as a message to the user or back to the sender. This applies even to a lot of stuff on https://www.alexa.com/topsites
This sort of thing is why many say email is dead, and why I maintain active burner accounts on a few of them. Mind you I would sooner have all the above than a facebook account so there is that.

If you can deal with having delivery to said providers be spotty then best is get some cheapo web server somewhere (if you are technical enough to be asking this question you probably should have a toy service somewhere just to throw random businesses and "can you make me a website" requests onto) and go with that. Being as it is current space year some would probably point you to some paravirtualisation stuff like Docker, and actually that might take the sting out of setting up servers (I have done a few from me putting the RAM chips in to sending things, though not for some years at this point).

Time was a few were missing features but all will chat to phones, imap and pop relatively painlessly. Hopefully you managed to detox yourself off any exchange type setups prior to this.
That said http://davmail.sourceforge.net/ is something to maybe consider implementing somewhere.


Other than that. I have dealt fairly extensively (as in I am the one that gets called when something goes wrong) with mail.com and gmx out of the big providers worth considering. I resent paying for email by itself in general so I am ambivalent there, however they do provide and do so well. ProtonMail I have some minor experience with, not bad but I would expect that if you are going to go after the tech crowd.

My options have boiled down to ProtonMail or Mail.com

The free version of ProtonMail offers 500MB which admittedly isn't very much, but I looked up how much I as using recently on Gmail (I've been using my primary account since like 2008-09) and it was 300MB. 300MB of worthless emails (newsletter, spam) so it's doable. Either that, or really just Mail.com

I've been closing online/email accounts I no longer use so when I do this I want to make sure it's all under one account than various (Gmail 1 - Personal, Gmail 2 - Personal, Gmail 3 - non-personal for online folks to contact me or Hotmail - Personal). "Gmail 2" will be closed too some time this month.

Edit: Gone with ProtonMail. Free users apparently have three months to check before the account goes inactive, but that won't be an issue for me.

I am using the spam checker tool and the email filter. The first tool I am using is verifying if I am on the spam list because I am often sending emails related to work, and I need to be sure the recipients got all the emails. Usually, if you got in the spam list, all of your emails would be automatically sent to the recipient's spam folder. I am using the second tool to increase my deliverability. It helps me to understand faster to which email I should reply, and what emails are spam. It helps to save a lot of personal time.
