Nintendo fiscal results reveal that Animal Crossing: New Horizons sold over 22 million units

9olf30z.png

The latest fiscal report data is in for Nintendo, giving insight into how the company performed over the past financial quarter. While sales dramatically rose over the worldwide lockdown period, one game in particular shifted far more copies than the rest. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which released in the fourth quarter of the previous fiscal year added 10.63 million units to its sales, bringing the total to 22.40 million. These new numbers put the latest Animal Crossing title ahead of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Pokemon Sword and Shield, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, each of which sold just under 20 million units. Currently, the most popular game on the Nintendo Switch is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, which released during the system's launch window, and sits at 26.74 million units sold. By comparison, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe saw 1.97 million sales during the same quarter, meaning if Animal Crossing: New Horizons keeps up its momentum, it just might become the highest-selling game on the console.

Additionally, Nintendo also released two other games recently: Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics, and Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition, which sold 1.32 million and 1.03 million units, respectively. Finally, Ring Fit Adventure, which saw shortages in multiple regions due to excessive demand currently sits at 4.0 million sales.

Great game. New Leaf is better tho.
There's a point to be made along the lines of "New Horizons allows you too much control, which contributes to a lack of the series' "natural-ness". Something about me thinks like, all these pristine, perfect islands people have, with all their favorite villagers, end up lessening the experience in a way. It's too controlled.
That, and the lack of Nintendo items... :(
I never played a AC game before but I would imagine it would be enjoyable playing with other people than playing by yourself. Good for Nintendo selling 22 million copies it just shows you despite of piracy the demand is still there.
Maybe it's just me, but I get a hunch the incentive to pirate on the Switch might be less than, say, the 3DS, given both hardware limitations (with only earlier Switches easily moddable) as well as their willingness to ban users (3DS users rarely got reprimanded for piracy or hacking in general)

Point being, I doubt piracy is actually all that common on the Switch, honestly.

In my country, Switch games price just skyrocketed yesterday, like that Flat Earther who built its own rocket to see if the earth was flat or not, their sales are gonna crash hard if Nintendo doesn't do anything with the main an ONLY distribution company we have here: LATAMEL (AKA RATAMEL). At least from my part, this game was the last I will buy new and at launch, and I really doubt it will sell more now with the higher price tag.

@Stealphie IMO and many other's, this game feels like a chore rather than a game to chill and do random shit, and the last was the core of the Animal Crossing games; I too prefer New Leaf because of that.

Yeah...that's gamers today i'm afraid

2000s - Diablo, Crazy Taxi, Medievil, Tomb Raider, Half Life, Hitman, Perfect Dark, Spyro, Red Alert, Hitman, Jetset Radio....
2020s - Animal crossing, Running simulator, Life Simulator, Flying simulator, Sims, button mashing simulator, simulator simulator, game-where-you-collect-leafs

Ohh how gaming and gamers have e(de)volved

Depends on the way player uses that level of control. For example, instead of trying to fine-tune my island to utmost perfection, I made a natural village and created some gardens and territory for my villagers based on their personal hobbies and preferences - and now my town feels more alive and natural than it ever was in previous entries, especially when I see my lil' folksters interacting with all those things and having time of their life navigating the place =)

As much as I am nostalgic about 2000s, most releases consisted of Halo/Doom 3 clones, mediocre driving games and (especially in late-decade) those shitty cover shooters where your health regenerates automatically. For each Diablo and Half-Life, we had a couple dozen of fart-outs like Kreed or Big Mutha Truckers. At least we actually have variety now, with indie market being a thing.

It's so sad when the word "chill" is used together with a word "video game".
Games used to increase cognitive capacity, but not they are degrading it.
No wander parent's hate that their kid is playing video games.

Take BotW for example...they took out essence of the game and replaced it with bland and borring world where you can do shit but never use your brain. And as a cherry on top they took out the dungeons and puzzles to make you high and drugged with "chilly" music, mo brainer adventure, walking simulation, to thik as little as you can, and reach the end. Even bosses are easy as shit. Final boss is the easiest, he LITERALLY does nothing but wait for you to hit him, and the game even shows you where to hit him.

What i wanted to point out is those games had contend and creativity, dificulty, puzzles, brain teasers compared to nowdays where games are used to simulate life. As for veriety, i dont think so, every single game is copy of another. Veriety is def NOT strong side of todays gaming.
Only few games today can claim that title as being original creative and new. in 2000s and before and little after, majority of games where actually creative and did not hold your hand or made you live simulated life or to live in it and your only task is to jump and.

So id reather have less quality games, than ton of veriety shitty ones.

Animal Crossing pretty much encourages creativity, though. Just lurk through some of the user-made islands, they're incredibly artistic. That aside, we live in a generation where games like Dark Souls, Baba Is You and Minecraft are highly acclaimed sellers - and those are all about difficulty, puzzles and creativity in their fields.

How about bad skating games trying to capitalize on the success of Tony Hawk's? Fuck, even Tony Hawk became bad skating games trying to capitalize on Tony Hawk.

I actually kinda liked those (if only out of guilty pleasure), so I selfishly didn't want to count them in :P

You liked Tony Hawk, or you liked the derivative copies? I need to know how much I need to yell at you for, I fucking love the Tony Hawk games.

But yeah I'd say the 2010s has a lot more creativity overall than some might let on, esp if you look at indies and arguably some of the Nintendo titles that've come out.

Mmmh, Dreamcast/PSX era, that's gaming ! :D
Just imagine a game like Soviet Strike coming out today, Its difficulty, unfairness, tactics and strategies involved would make it niche instantly. Dark Souls ? lol...

Art spawns from constraints,
Feeds on struggles,
Dies from freedom.

Have you seen those dudes who made a 8bits game for STEAM ? That's insane creativity, not only artistic, but even technical:

Furthermore, everything has already been imagined for the videogame medium, admit that we have little to no room to innovation today. Look aeronautical and spatial engineering, nothing is more boring and normalised, a friggin death sentence to work on these projects. On the other hand, front end nuclear technologies are way more interesting but faaaaaaaar less popular.

I know it's cliché but we must never, EVER, look in the same direction as the crowd, we would end missing the best part of the show.

"Animal Crossing pretty much encourages creativity"
-Yeah...."Creativity" in state of nirvana and brainlesnes. If by creativity you mean "put this hat with than color" than yeah, sure, its creative.
-As for Dark souls, they are rare exceptions, and yet, no cognitive effort needed, just repeting skills..Although id admit, i love that game. It is a rare gem.

Tbh people play what they like at the end of day, but the fact of the matter is that games today are way easy and everything need to be told to players and its even encouraged, just so they will be hooked!
If games where ACTUALLY hard and utilize thinking most today kids would never play it.

Never played New Leaf, but what I'm missing are the NES games that were in the GameCube version. Nintendo could implement an Arcade Archives feature to play like the NES games on Animal Crossing on the GameCube. I haven't played City Folk much, but it seems they were missing too. This and the HORRIBLE HORRIBLE online I'm complaining about.

The rest plays fine, great game, a bit of Joycon drift I have takes me longer to build cliffs etc, but still enjoying it very well.

Minecraft... For normies.
Implying Minecraft isn't for normies. Hell, I'd say this series has stayed in relative obscurity for the past 20 years until this game came out, and that's mainly due to the pandemic. Animal Crossing has always been played by a rather niche crowd. Elementary school children use Minecraft in the classroom to learn physics. So, your comparison is kinda weird.

Lul, we just found the brightest crayon in the box. Sorry you have no imagination. I'm going to also guess you're the type of person who can't draw anything past a crude stick figure because "drawing has nothing to do with creativity".

Animal Crossing newer games give way too much control. Too much micromanaging, before there was things in the game you couldn't control, even if you played several hours a day.

The Gamecube game really is underated, I think I mostly played the DS game because being portable I could take it everywhere.

I just been playing offline, and they give you a few bots here n there on your team to help battle. I don't think it's as funny as the other games tho, more battle oriented than humor, which kinda sucks, but I'm still early in it

@BigOnYa, doesnt the game have a campaign mode?

Yea, and co-op, but you can also start a pvp session and battle just with friends. You get special skill cards (powers) the more you play. And higher value cards, but you can only enable so many cards at a time.
