Get ready for a nostalgia trip, and an informative look back on the "golden age" of video games in a new Netflix show. The streaming service will be releasing High Score later this August, which is a documentary that focuses on the 80's and 90's in gaming and how certain franchises impacted the industry, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Final Fantasy, and Street Fighter. Not only that, but High Score will also feature narration by Charles Martinet, the iconic voice of Mario himself. It'll be available to stream on Netflix on August 19th.

I can't help but feel skeptical over the choice of topics, tbh. All of those franchises are universally low-hanging fruits as far as gaming history goes, and medium is already oversaturated with retellings of same old anecdotes - as a result, this selection comes off as director trying to craft episodes out of what will be easier to research on Wikipedia. In worst case scenario, we'll get yet another series of redundant recaps on "how Mortal Kombat created ESRB" or "how Mario 2 is actually Doki Doki Panic".

Seems like it's made more for those who have a more casual relationship with games. It'll retread all old ground, I'm sure, but it's something I might be able to get the parents or non-gamer friends to watch.

I met Charles Martinet at Sacanime 2019. It was great, he's a really nice guy, and has a lot of really funny stories leading up to him playing Mario.

Another one of those history of gaming documentaries... by now I know more about the golden age of gaming than I know about WWII. And that's by far the most extensive topic we get taught in history class over here.

Why should I?

To learn more about the World you live in? You may believe ignorance is bliss, but the less you know, the less informed decisions you make in your life, the more you hurt yourself. And if you don't have time, documentaries are the perfect format, much less time consuming than searching for articles covering the same information.

While I do enjoy nature and trying to do what you want in life, I've seen some surprisingly good documentaries lately.

Down To Earth (with Zac Effron), where him and a health guru type guy travel the world and explore how some people live in sustainable ways, or healthier ways of life. It's much better than I could describe it. I've incorporated a bit of what they show into my own life and it's better for it.

Connected is another great one, about the interconnected nature of all things. The first episode about surveillance was probably my favorite. Gets into the dark side of data collection at one point.

I usually watch documentaries while playing games on Switch or my laptop. It's easy to find 40 min to an hour to learn about new things, especially if you use your gaming time in parallel (Usually slow paced or turn-based games work best for this). I may do the same with this new show.

Cool that one of the most recognisable voices in gaming history is doing the narration... but honestly, who cares?
I'd like to know who's producing/directing/researching this - even with that info I think it will be fair to assume that this won't feature any groundbreaking revelations that haven't been in any of the countless other VG docs over the years.
