Recently, there has been a certain tendency to beat up guys that dedicates to steal the belongings of public transport passengers.
In Mexico City we have a very ugly kind of public transport called "Combis" which are literal vans.
I'm someone that almost never uses Combis as I barely fit on regular buses, imagine me trying to fit on one of those.
Anyways...
Yesterday it became Trending Topic on Twitter, a fucking rat that intended to steal passengers on a Combi, but things went unexpected:

Not so long ago, actually 2 weeks ago, my sister and mom became subject of this felony whilst trying to go to the hospital, so seeing this makes me very, very happy.

I too have been subject of robbery on public transport.
Unfortunately (or fortunately) it akways happens when I'm with my family, and they literally has to stop me before I fucking beat up the guy robbing us.

I mean... I'm nealy 6'3", what could possibly go wrong with guys that are 5'5"?

People on rural zones kills them instead.
Or they get burnt alive.

Here in the city they just get a beat up and that's it.

I neither understand what drives people to commit such felony.
As you said.. how desperate a person can be to become a criminal?

Unfortunately for me, in my country said criminals owns a special trait by an organization of human rights... so if they get caught, Human Rights comes to the rescue because they're people and they have rights.
Most of the times, said rats leaves jail as soon as Human Rights comes for them.

That's why my city is so insecure... but people are getting enough of them, so we beat them up instead.

Anyway as far as being tall. One time I got someone doing an attempted mugging it was a tiny* little I am guessing crackhead (was some form of twitchy "wired" thing, normally have to observe quietly to detect the particular drug) lady that set a dog on me... in the middle of a park in a terrifically poor area around lunchtime in glorious sunshine, at a distance a decent overhand throw/hit with a baseball bat could have broken a police station window.

*after I had sorted the dog out she swung for me and missed, it was some bull cross thing I was hands on with (it was not trained as an attack dog thankfully, and not the two of them at once) so I was kneeling courtesy of the dog (still have scars of that one to this day) and a straight out punch (not angled up at all) whilst still kneeling hit her in the solar plexus. If I had done that standing it would have been clear of her head.

Rationality does not tend to enter into it, if nothing else selling the belongings of the average person on public transport is time consuming, risky, not very profitable and the act itself is liable to see you caught. If it is combined with a bit of desperation (never mess with someone that has nothing to lose and all that) it is an even more potent cocktail.

Equally misdirection and speed. Key to being a thief. Size and fighting ability can help for certain approaches but not all of them.

That said I am ever wary of vigilante justice.

I have never met that. Went past a gym a while back and at first I thought it was a convention/support group from sufferers of ILS (imaginary lats syndrome) so I guess it is a possibility.

Loved this story.
Talking about Vigilante Justice, not so long ago... probably 5 years ago, the same happened on a bus in my city.
But the guy who was being robbed, take out a gun and shot the muggers on the head.
It became news because everyone was praising this guy as some sort of hero.
Actually, people who where interviewed about this (passengers that too got robbed) told the media that this guy pledged only one thing:
Never told who was the one who killed those as*****
The police did searched for this guy but never found him.
