Hey all. Long-time member but I still have a pretty noobish question.

I have a 1TB drive that came with my PS4 Pro but it's full. It looks like upgrading the external storage is a huge pain in the butt on a jailbroken PS4 so I decided to just buy a 2TB 2.5" SSD. I really wanted a 4TB platter drive but apparently they still haven't figured out how to make those 9.5mm yet!

Anyway I was wondering what the method I am supposed to use to transfer all my hacked stuff over to the new drive. There's a guide on Sony's website that says you need a USB stick with a "transfer version of the firmware" and an external 1TB drive to do this. However, I am nervous for obvious reasons of doing it the official Sony way because I have no idea if it will transfer over my hacks and installed games or not.

What is the GBATemp recommended way to upgrade the 1TB drive on the PS4 Pro? I am on 5.05.

As always, thank you so kindly in advance for any help you can provide!

you can always reinstall fpkg if you have them backup somewhere, or just redownload them.

Important things are account, game saves and unlocked trophies that can easily backup and restore on 5.05 to new hard drive/ssd.

Yeah if it doesn't transfer my actual games I'm not sure what the point is. I guess I'm stuck with a 1TB drive. sigh
As @Rynsqrs said, check @KiiWii's aio-ps4-exploit-guide, it has all the info you need to change your HDD and transfer all your data.

It's under the section titled UPGRADING/BACKING UP THE INTERNAL HDD.

So the only way I can do this is by reinstalling every single PKG all over again? How is that "backing up and restoring"? I'm starting from scratch again! Not to mention who keeps the original PKGs after they're done installing them?

No that's not the only way. Read the guide which I linked above. Here, I'm even copying it and pasting it here for you:
  • Back up your data, but don't use official methods to backup your fake signed games and apps, use FTP to copy the USER/APP/XXXXXXXXX/APP.PKG (fake signed games) to an external backup: rename them as the CUSAXXXXX folders they came out of to remind you what they were.
You can retain SAVES by using the built in options under: [Settings] > [System] > [Backup and Restore] > [Back Up PS4] (Deselect Applications). You can also retain TROPHIES by copying the USER/HOME/XXXXXXXXX/TROPHY folder and the USER/TROPHY folder via FTP (be careful to keep them separate as they are named the same)
  • Replace the HDD:
You can internally upgrade the PS4 to 8tb max, however the dimensions of the HDD must be no taller than 9.5mm to fit in the enclosure (2.5inch Sata HDD).
  • Reinstall the System software in safe mode (option 7):
    5.05 RECOVERY PUP - MD5: C2A602174F6B1D8EF599640CD276924A (Update/Recovery pup path is: USB:/PS4/UPDATE/PS4UPDATE.PUP)
  • Restore the data that has been backed up: Once upgraded restore your saves again using the [Backup and Restore] option, restore trophies using FTP, and restore games by reinstalling the APP.PKG files to internal (You can move them to external if you want using APPTOUSB: see below)
FWIW, I do keep the original PKGs because I can't count on having my PKGs on the PS4's internal HDD only. What would you do if you need to uninstall/reinstall a game because of a botched fpkg update or because it is required when going to a higher JB? Or if you lose the db and you don't have a backup to restore it? Or if you need to replace your HDD and botch the backup/restore process for some reason?

Well I'm not sure what you expect there's no way to clone a PS4 internal with fpkgs. But you can just do what I did after full internal, add an external. For 6.72 if it's formatted to the PS4 you would need to use remote package installer/sender, I made a guide in the tutorial section. It is not really a hassle at all and they work just as good as internal. Plus sending via computer should be faster because no copying to usb first just send directly to PS4.

If you bought the hdd expecting to be an internal you would need an enclosure. They cost like $10. Just make sure it has usb 3.0 and the PS4 should let you format it no problem.

uh why is everyone confused about this? i am so surprised. The built in sony utility in fact does back up fpkg data? Why do people just assume it doesn't? I did this a few times. First when I changed from my launch phat ps4 to a 4tb hd and then again when i migrated my collection to a pro ps4. You just need a usb with enough space (cough has that been the problem for folks?). All the people who are not suggesting this to the fellow. Have you ever actually tried and failed to backup fpkg with the built in sony tool?? I can only share the 2 times i did this and it worked. I will note that this was back during 4.05 and 4.55 days. Did something change in the firmware???

So basically you are insulting us for not knowing yet you don't know either if it works on 6.72 or not. Learn to explain things to people without insulting them would be a nice tip especially when you don't even know 100% if your answer is right either smh.

it is not insulting it is me asking basic question.

You claim this does not work.

Have you in fact tried and failed.

I have tried and succeeded twice.

You tried on old firmwares. So you don't know if it works still. Try it on 6.72 and come back and then put us down for not giving the right answer.

i mean you are saying this to someone with a throwaway ps4 i can easily run this test. This fellow should simply try. To be honest I even at one point had recordings of this process.

You sound negative.

I sound positive.

Stupid covid makes everyone a jerk.

Op if you have a 2tb usb drive to attempt it i would certainly give it a go. Way I look at it. To the ps4 when you are backing up the ps4 does not do a database check so you should be good.

Look the only way to learn thing is to investigate. When people assume they make an ass out of u and me...

In my initial reply, I suggested that he uses the PS4's built-in backup & restore utility and said that I'm not sure if it transfers fpkgs or not.

i know i saw your lone voice of reason it was noted. this site is beginning to depress me. thanks for being the one voice in the crowd. even if you were unsure...

I am in fact using 5.05. I guess I will try the official Sony method.

Does using an external drive on a jailbroken PS4 Pro work better with 6.72? I would simply upgrade the firmware if that's the case. App2USB looks pretty confusing and janky.
