I am reading talk that Microsoft is making Net play free. That is why they have removed 12 month XBL Gold from sale.

My requests are being read and answered!? I have always been a Sony person and I never paid for PS"+". I was going to move to PC but now I can buy an Xbox and feel very happy. I already prefer Series X to PS5 in all areas, except for SSD. Microsoft is trying to banish 30fps, Sony is embracing it with all their top games. Microsoft made a good looking machine, Sony made a stupid kiddo looking machine.

I hope online play becomes free for Xbone and 360 as well.

I don't see the issue with 30fps in most games. My favourite genre are RPG's, for the most part it doesn't make much difference.
As for being free, I doubt it. Then again, I don't really care. I pay Nintendo and Sony just to make sure that they keep my saves online.

I would be surprised for MS to give up that cash cow, however if it in turn screws over Sony's income stream or allows them to compete against phones or maybe not compete against themselves if they are merging it with PC/the whole windows experience it is not outside the realm of reason.

Anyway money for nothing (servers do cost money, however not that much, especially when you are Microsoft), or worse money to be poorly insulted, was never my thing so I have never dropped anything on live and playing it with friends never had me regretting my decisions. Hopefully we see the end of it.

I hope they don't get rid of payed online. It's helpful for keeping the rift-raft and cheaters out of games. If you can't afford to play online I don't want to play with you.

Nope, cheaters can just switch accounts, that doesn't prevent anything. It would also be illegal for Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo to not let you refund your purchase anyways.
They should get rid of paid online, no reasons to pay for it, especially in cases like Nintendo where they literally make you pay for Peer2Peer.

companies will do it if they know people pay for it, if people colectively agreed to stop paying companies would realize people dont like paying for something that's free on pc. change starts with you, same reason i uninstalled whatsapp, i refuse to keep using a shit service if said service refuses to improve

meh, ms or sony arent really that much better, most AAA studios have their own servers, so ms and sony have a paywall for connecting to other people's servers

at least it would be good if you had the choice on consoles, 30 fps is the fault of the devs, not the hardware, there could be an option on the settings menu of eery console game to toggle between high fidelity and high fps, for people who do care

it's not about looks, it's about responsiveness and playability.
and in some games a higher framerate is necessary to avoid either motion sickness or to actually be able to aim
It's a good argument, but I think competent game designers already know better to implement 60FPS where it counts - which is why you'll almost never see 30FPS in something like multiplayer shooters or fighting games. In that context, a lot of online messaroo around framerate seems to be just "Having 60+FPS for the sake of having 60+FPS", no matter if the game actually benefits from that or not.

Microsoft was the first to push the envelope with the requirement that people pay for a subscription to play online. They're the reason that both Sony and Nintendo later jumped on that same train, Microsoft showed them customers were willing accept that sort of thing. So I seriously doubt they're going to change course on it now, unless perhaps XBL Gold subscribers have dropped off drastically in the last year for some unknown reason. At best they might restructure subscriptions so that non-paying customers can play games online, but have no real online functionality aside from that (such as group play, voice chat, etc).

As for the 60+ FPS thing, it's really a moot point since hardware performance hasn't been a focus for either Microsoft or Sony until this latest generation (XBSX/PS5). Nintendo has actually put them both to shame where software performance is concerned, as well. Regardless, I don't feel like Microsoft deserves any brownie points in that category.

When I first heard of this, my thought was stealth price rise (going by the price of 2x6 months at one retailer being £10 more than the 12 months).

I will be surprised if they do get rid of paid online, I’d guess they’re that confident in Game pass and/or are desperate to claw back market share.

i would make it sort of similar to how csgo prime works, have paying customers only on lobbies with other paying customers, and let people who not pay join said lobbies if they reached a certain amount of playtime or level (set by the dev)

All games benefit from that. All games look, feel and play .. proper at 60fps or higher.

I have not played most of the blockbuster PS4 games simply because I can not stand 30fps! Only one I have played is Uncharted 4. They got the multiplayer of that to be 60fps, which is very good of them.

While most games benefit from higher framerates not all do. Take World of Horror for instance, there would be no point in increasing the framerate really.

There aren't many games that can be hindered by 60FPS (aside of stylistic examples, like abovementioned World of Horror), but I don't see how something like turn-based or slow-paced titles benefit from 60FPS all that much, honestly.
